00:00In Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro denounced the far-right insist on his plans against
00:14social peace.
00:18In Palestine, Israeli bombardment of the Magasi refugee camp left at least five people killed
00:23in central Gaza.
00:29Argentina's football fans celebrate their victory over Colombia at the 2024 Copa America
00:33final.
00:51Hello and welcome from the south, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Atleti Studios in Havana,
00:55Cuba.
00:56We begin with the news.
00:57In the United States, the image of the shooter who made an attempt on the life of former
01:00president and presidential candidate Donald Trump during his campaign rally was released.
01:03The subject was identified by the FBI as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20 years old and originally
01:08from Pennsylvania, who was an employee of a nursing home in the suburbs of Pittsburgh.
01:13Images of the attacker shooting from a rooftop 137 meters away from the Republican candidate
01:17were disseminated on social media.
01:19Authorities revealed that prior to the incident where a bystander was killed, Crooks packed
01:24a set of explosives that he planned to use during the attack.
01:32The assassination attempt against the Republican candidate raised concerns about the security
01:36of the Republican National Convention to be held this Monday.
01:39Secret Service, in collaboration with Milwaukee's police and fire departments, closed streets
01:43and deployed hundreds of officers to patrol the surrounding areas.
01:46Donald Trump said that the assassination attempt against him will not affect his campaign this
01:51week before the Republican Party delegates.
01:59We now go deeper on the fallout of the assassination attempt against Republican candidate Donald
02:03Trump on Saturday.
02:04For this, we are joined by Danny Shull, Latin American and Caribbean studies professor at
02:08the City University of New York and international affairs analyst.
02:12Welcome, Danny.
02:13Greetings, Luis.
02:14Thank you for the invite.
02:16It's a pleasure.
02:17Two days have passed since the Trump rally shooting.
02:20In your view, what is the immediate impact that this incident has had in the U.S. political
02:24landscape looking ahead to the November elections?
02:27Well, we're beyond the immediate impact.
02:32Right now we're at a more sober moment where the ruling class is closing its ranks.
02:38The number one order coming from the true ruling class, from the very summits of political
02:44power in the Democratic Party, from the ownership of MSNBC and CNN and the New York Times, and
02:50then across the aisle, Fox News and at the Republican National Convention, where Trump's
02:56expected to pick his VP.
02:58The message is clear.
02:59Cool it off.
03:00Cool off the political rhetoric.
03:02This is the biggest existential crisis in U.S. capitalism since when?
03:07Since 1968, when RFK, Robert F. Kennedy, the candidate, is assassinated.
03:13Martin Luther King, within a few months, was assassinated.
03:17So right now it's clear.
03:19There's no more talk of Democrats versus Republicans.
03:23Even if we listen this morning to Amy Goodman on Democracy Now!, it sounded like she even
03:27had struck a different chord.
03:30So it's a very, quote-unquote, American moment.
03:33At least that's what the ruling class is trying to project.
03:37They know that an all-time low, this is an all-time low in terms of global and even national
03:43confidence in the American imperial project.
03:46I think Ukraine becomes secondary.
03:50Everything becomes secondary.
03:51The ruling class is closing ranks, Luis.
03:54Professor, how can something like this happen with such heavy security detail, and witnesses
03:59reporting after the incident that they had warned the Secret Service of suspicious movements
04:03on the building of Amman?
04:06Well, Fox is blaming the local police.
04:09CNN is blaming the intelligence apparatuses.
04:14So perhaps there are some divisions there, and I think it's significant to say that in
04:192016 and in 2020, the CIA and the FBI both took out big, big ads in The New York Times
04:26against Trump, something unprecedented for these, quote-unquote, apolitical agencies
04:31who cause all types of assassinations of other presidents across the world.
04:37I think it's important to highlight that we live in a world where one billionaire's ear
04:42or outer ear is worth more than how many lives in Gaza.
04:47I would say that this estimate of 40,000 murdered by the axis of genocide is extremely, extremely
04:53low.
04:54I think it's more in the hundreds of thousands.
04:56I think there's demographic proof of that.
04:58This is showing the true nature of the U.S. system, of capitalism, of imperialism, and
05:06they see that right now it's not worth arguing over the hundreds of billions of dollars that
05:12they've sent for a proxy war against Russia and Ukraine.
05:16Everything right now is secondary or tertiary.
05:18The fundamental contradiction has to be resolved, and that's restoring to the American people
05:23confidence in this fundamentally anti-democratic system.
05:26Saturday's incident puts in evidence how deep the political divide has grown in the United
05:31States, not only on domestic issues, as you were saying, but also on international ones,
05:34like you were referring to the Ukraine crisis and the genocide in Palestine being carried
05:39out by the Israeli regime.
05:41In the past month, we have seen how thousands have taken to the streets and university campuses
05:44to denounce the genocide, and we have also seen the reaction of mainstream media.
05:50What is your take on the matter?
05:53More than 9,000 of us have been arrested in the United States since October in defense
05:59of Palestinian life, the right of Palestinian people to just exist, exposing all this hypocrisy
06:05of never again and never again, which never applied to the Palestinians or any native
06:09people across the world.
06:11But right now, that's the last thing on the minds of the American people.
06:16All attention is on Milwaukee.
06:19Trump has mentioned perhaps J.D. Vance, the Ohio extreme right wing Trumpite himself,
06:26but I don't think Vance right now is going to be a ruling class pick.
06:29His rhetoric is too hot.
06:31He is blaming the Democrats and their rhetoric.
06:34As of 48 hours ago, the messaging from the Democrats was that King Trump was the greatest
06:39peril to democracy, as if we ever even had democracy in this country of everyday people.
06:44So there is no question that the liberal rhetoric did play a certain role.
06:49Here we have Thomas Crooks, a 20-year-old who tried to definitively insert himself into
06:55history, something akin to Gustav Prinzeps, I mispronounced his name, but the young man
07:01who sparked the, quote unquote, sparked World War I with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
07:06of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.
07:10How could security be so lapsed?
07:13We don't know yet if it was six shots or seven shots that rang out as different eyewitness testimony.
07:19This is certainly shaking the very foundations of the ruling class.
07:24All of U.S. democracy in front of the world has the lowest credibility rate ever.
07:31One candidate can't even find the stage, can't even mount the stage.
07:35And that's not to be disrespectful to an 81-year-old, but it's asking why have they
07:39kept Joe Biden there to debate, to embarrass himself and his family when this individual
07:44clearly has Parkinson's or whatever mental diagnosis, and that's because the ruling class
07:48doesn't care.
07:49This isn't about Trump and Biden.
07:51This is about the oligarchs and their agenda to continue pillaging the entire globe, cutting
07:56our benefits at home.
07:58They have hundreds of billions for war against China, war against Russia, war against Venezuela,
08:03war against everybody, and chiefly, of course, against the Palestinian people.
08:07Where is the money for our needs, our educational needs?
08:10All of our children, including this 20-year-old, alienated, isolated.
08:14How could he go and retrieve this weapon all on his own and from three football fields
08:19away, 300 yards, attempt to assassinate, who even before the assassination attempt was
08:25probably going to be the next president of the United States.
08:28Now it seems that he's almost the candidate of the Democratic Party.
08:32The Democratic Party is expressing nothing but sympathy.
08:36Joe Biden wrote a letter to Melania Biden.
08:39So it really, it's like a new smoke screen where all use of critical reason has been
08:45lost due to the events on Saturday.
08:47Professor, one final question.
08:50Gun control has been a long-running issue in the States.
08:52I believe figures show that number of guns widely outnumber that of US citizens currently
08:57in the States.
08:58And so far this year, over 9,000 people have died in gun violence-related incidents.
09:02Trump himself has been a long advocate for gun ownership.
09:05Do you believe by any chance what happens Saturday might have an influence on future
09:09policies if elected?
09:12That's a very interesting question, Luis.
09:13I mean, Trump, Trump himself, the most divisive politician and trickster and conman, the divider
09:20and conqueror-in-chief, the demagogue-in-chief, suddenly is saying, no, we don't want any
09:27violence.
09:28And he struck a different chord as well.
09:30So it seems like he had to come to Jesus' moment as well.
09:33But getting blasted in the head like that could have that psychological impact on even
09:38the most stubborn of us.
09:40But yes, guns, the United States of guns, there's anywhere between 400 million to 500
09:46million guns awash in US society.
09:48That doesn't count the tens of millions of guns that the United States exports annually,
09:54the tens of millions of guns that they export illegally, not covertly.
10:00Guns play a huge role.
10:02How did this young man who clearly had some type of mental health issue, social isolation,
10:08because that's a pandemic in our society, so many of these social phenomena.
10:12Last year, Luis, we had 675 random shootings.
10:16Really how is this any different in this context of the most violent country in the history
10:22of the world?
10:24As Dr. Martin Luther King said, the greatest purveyor of violence in the history of the
10:29world.
10:30So I think this was a case of what Malcolm X famously said, the chickens came home to
10:34roost.
10:35As always, Danny, thank you very much for your input here from the South.
10:40Thank you very much for being with us and going over this important topic.
10:44Thank you, Luis.
10:45A pleasure.
10:46Always our pleasure.
10:47For now, let's take a short break.
10:48Remember, you can join us on TikTok at TELUS or English, where you'll find news in different
10:52formats, news updates, and much more.
10:55We'll be right back after a short break, don't worry.
11:18Welcome back.
11:31In Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro denounced that the far-right insists on its plans against
11:36social peace before he reaffirmed his call for a great national front against fascism.
11:41During a large rally at the Polyhedron of Caracas, the revolutionary forces joyfully
11:46received the president backing his candidacy and rejecting the unilateral U.S. sanctions.
11:51In this regard, Maduro, candidate for the Great Patriotic Pole, thanked the people for
11:54their support to defeat the actions of the far-right and promised to continue working
11:58for the national welfare.
12:01Maduro also condemned the fascist plans of right-wing domestic sectors that intended
12:05to sabotage the electric service and generate violence against the population for their
12:10personal interests of taking office.
12:22Let's go now live with our special envoy, Brian Mears, in Caracas, to bring us all the
12:26details from Venezuela ahead of the 28th presidential election.
12:30Hello Brian, what are today's highlights within the ongoing electoral campaign?
12:39Well, you know there's only 13 days left until the election and the campaign season is relatively
12:46short. It started on July 4th and it ends on the 25th, so we've just passed the halfway
12:52mark. All of the candidates are out campaigning, they've all got busy schedules, and this weekend
12:58President Nicolas Maduro went to the premiere of a new biopic that's been produced about
13:03his life by the Futuro civil society organization. He also gave a press conference in which he
13:12talked about a grassroots mobilizing strategy which they're going to use to try to increase
13:17voter turnout. It's called 1x10x7, and basically what it means is that every Maduro supporter
13:28is being invited or asked to try to convince 10 people, friends and family, to vote for
13:34him this July 28th. But beyond that, they're asking them to ask each of those 10 people
13:40if they can request for another 7 of their friends and family members to vote for Maduro
13:46as well. So it's a kind of rapid expansion grassroots technique. It's been used in a lot
13:53of elections around the world in the past, and it's just one of the many strategies they're
13:57using to try and guarantee a higher turnout on this 28th. In other news, Roman Golovchenko,
14:05the Prime Minister of Borussia, arrived in Venezuela yesterday and he met with Ivan Gil,
14:12the Foreign Affairs Minister. They've got a busy schedule today. They're going to be
14:16visiting military bases and also just talking about how they can strengthen the relationships
14:21between the two countries, especially in terms of commerce. So the election is only
14:2713 days off now. It's going to be held on what would have been the 70th anniversary,
14:32the 70th birthday of the late Hugo Chavez, and that is a fact that's not being lost on
14:38the millions of supporters of Chavismo and of Nicolas Maduro and the great patriotic
14:45poll.
14:47Ryan, one quick question before ending this little pass with you. You are there on the
14:52ground. What can you tell us from the perspective of the people, from the Venezuelan perspective,
14:57the mood in which they are going into this electoral campaign ahead of the elections?
15:07Well, you know, there have been some signs of possible attempts to create havoc or violence
15:15exhibited by the far right in cooperation with Colombian paramilitary groups on the
15:22border regions. But here in Caracas, the mood is very calm. I don't see any signs that there
15:29will be any trouble here on the 28th.
15:33Ryan, for your latest information on the ongoing electoral campaign ahead of the 28th elections.
15:42We're going to continue with more news.
16:02In Palestine, at least five people were killed after an Israeli bombardment of the Bagassi
16:06refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. WAFA news agents reported three children among
16:11the victims of the airstrike, which targeted a home of the al-Manama family. The bombing
16:16occurred simultaneously with other strikes on the al-Maghraq area and the neighboring
16:20Nusrat and Buraj camps, or in the heart of the destroyed enclave. The attacks come two
16:25days after the massacre perpetrated by the Israeli humanitarian zone of Mawassi, where
16:3090 people were killed and more than 300 injured.
16:37We have a final short break coming up, but before we invite you to join our WhatsApp
16:40community for our English-speaking audience. You can scan the QR code on screen to join
16:44directly, and share the link to reach more people. Constant news coverage of Latin America
16:48and the Caribbean, as well as the rest of the world. Final short break, don't go away.
17:00Welcome back. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Ukraine was plotting
17:27an attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin with U.S. funding. On Telegram, Zakharova pointed
17:30out that one of the leaders of the Kiev regime, Vudanov, publicly confessed that the Ukrainian
17:35intelligence had been preparing an attack against the Russian president. These preparations
17:39were carried out with U.S. fundings, without which the General Intelligence Directorate
17:43of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, the Security Service or the Presidential Office could not
17:48function. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov affirms that President Putin's security is
17:53duly guaranteed. The Russian government has deemed as threatening
18:01a decision announced at the latest North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit. Kremlin spokesman
18:05Dmitry Peskov said the resolution passed recently at the NATO meeting poses a threat to Moscow
18:10as the Alliance has confirmed its intention to eventually admit Ukraine. Peskov claims
18:15that in so doing, NATO does not contribute to diplomatic negotiations between the parties,
18:19but rather forces hostilities against Russia by continuing to supply and provide military
18:24assistance to Ukraine.
18:42On Monday, Argentina's fans continued to celebrate the victory in the 2024 Copa America
18:48after beating Colombia 1-0. In this way, the Argentine national football team won their
18:5316th trophy in just the 47th edition of this continental tournament, thanks to a goal scored
18:58by Lautaro Martinez in overtime. It is worth noting that with this victory, the Argentine
19:03national team surpassed Uruguay as the most winning team in Copa America as they also
19:07materialized a back-to-back championship after their win in the 2021 edition.
19:11To see Argentina be the champion of the Americas and the world, and now we're going for another
19:21cup, the only thing I ask is, wait a minute, Di Maria, come on Di Maria, you still have
19:27one more World Cup in you, don't be mean, please stay, we will beg like we did for Messi
19:32stay, for one more World Cup.
19:35For this to happen in this socio-cultural and economic context is like a lifeline for
19:41Argentina.
19:44Some highlights of the match included the departure of captain and Argentine star Lionel
19:48Messi in the middle 66 after suffering an ankle injury. It was also Angel Di Maria's last
19:53game for the Alves-Celestes national team, where he played for more than 15 years. After
19:58the match, Colombian player James Rodriguez won the best player of the tournament award,
20:02while Emiliano Eldibu Martinez was the best goalkeeper, and now Taro Martinez won the
20:07golden boot after scoring five goals during the tournament, including the one that defined
20:11the final match.
