Danny Dyer praises co-star Ryan Sampson for exploring masculinity in ‘right way’

The Mr Bigstuff co-stars speak to Yahoo UK about their new Sky comedy, and why it was essential to explore what it means to be a man in the show.

00:00Obviously, the show's very comedic, but it kind of touches on some serious subjects as well.

00:03You've got grief and obviously Glenn not being able to get up as well.

00:07I wondered why did you, in particular, Ryan, want to look at that from a comedic angle?

00:10And Danny, what do you think of the take on it?

00:12The erectile dysfunction or the other stuff?

00:14Both.

00:15Well, I wanted to write something about partly...

00:20I mean, it's a comedy show and I want it to be a funny thing,

00:23but I also wanted to write something that was about broken families

00:27because in my family, we lost my mum a few years ago

00:30and it sort of spun everyone off in the sort of unexpected thing about,

00:34you know, you lose someone and it's like the worst thing ever,

00:36but then there's this new unexpected thing,

00:38which is like, that was the linchpin that held you all together.

00:41So you're all fractured apart.

00:42And so I suppose in a way, I wanted to write this thing that's about like families,

00:46a kind of fantastical way that they might come back together,

00:49these two people who have lost their matriarch and their dad as well.

00:52Yeah.

00:53And also you were sort of delving into the masculinity thing

00:56and the most emasculating thing is if a man can't get his winkle hard.

01:00Well, supposedly.

01:02But I mean, it's mad that it is because it's a mental thing.

01:04Of course it is, I know, but it's almost like, oh God, I'm not a man.

01:07I can't, I can't, you know, get my, I can't, it won't function.

01:13So it's important because it's, you're right,

01:17actually in the grand scheme of things, it's f***ed with being masculine,

01:20but you feel like if that's not working, then, you know, like, what are you?

01:25You know, what have you become?

01:27But, but I think, I think we dealt with it in the right way, you know,

01:30because, well, it's interesting, again, plot twist.

01:33What actually does get your winkle hard, young Glen?

01:36You know, it's, you must watch the show to realise what it is

01:40because it's a f***ing belter.
