00:00While looking around, a Visayan warty pig is slowly looking for food.
00:16When he sees a clear area, he immediately digs a hole to eat.
00:25Their diet is usually fruit crops.
00:30The pig is alerted when someone is about to arrive.
00:48He meets the person who will bring him closer.
00:51This is not to attack, but to greet.
01:03Meet Anakin, a friendly Visayan warty pig of Bayawan Nature Reserve.
01:10One of his favorite people is Justin, the reserve manager of the place.
01:16He immediately greets him.
01:21Suddenly, he lies down to have his belly rubbed.
01:31That's a dog!
01:39When he feels that no one is bothering him, he brings Justin closer to another pig.
01:48More pig!
01:52We don't know where he got it.
01:55This is a very vulnerable position for a wild animal to show another animal its belly.
02:00Sniff around, sniff the people, and then if he's like, ah, you're friendly, he'll roll over.
02:08The pig is the fourth most intelligent animal in the world.
02:17In school, they can retain a memory of a three-year-old.
02:26They can feel emotions such as fear, anxiety, and irritation.
02:38And Anakin's most anticipated thing is to eat his favorite mango.
02:45He immediately licks it.
02:57In Bayawan Nature Reserve in Negros Occidental,
03:01a Visayan warty pig of Bayawan Nature Reserve,
03:04a Visayan warty pig of Bayawan Nature Reserve,
03:08is known as friendly to humans.
03:13One of his hobbies is to have his belly rubbed.
03:19But aside from Anakin, there's another pig that gets close to humans, Mario.
03:26It's a pig.
03:33But it's not like Anakin, who can be held.
03:37A long time ago, two piglets were lost inside the reserve.
03:42What we noticed after releasing them is that they follow the keepers.
03:48When the keepers were preparing food from the kitchen, they would follow the keepers down to the enclosures.
03:53So that's when we decided that this is not the behavior we want for the animals here in the reserve.
04:01And we do not want that they'll pass on this behavior.
04:05Because of their closeness to humans, they need to go back to the enclosures.
04:14Today, I'll try how kind Anakin is.
04:18He's used to people here, like Justin.
04:21But what if he meets someone else?
04:30What we're going to do is a bit different.
04:33We're going to enter the enclosure of a pigweed.
04:36Because usually, the pigweeds that we've encountered in the past,
04:40they'll really chase you, no matter how tame they are.
04:51I look at this guy, Anakin.
04:54When Justin entered the enclosure,
04:59he was chased by a pigweed, as if...
05:03Wow, it's the first time, huh?
05:05When Justin entered the enclosure,
05:10he was chased by a pigweed, as if...
05:13Wow, it's the first time, huh?
05:22So Anakin has been here for how long?
05:25He's been here for around 25 years, so 5 years.
05:30When he moved here, was that his behavior?
05:33Yes.
05:35But this is different from the behavior of pigweed, right?
05:39Typically, yes.
05:41These warty pigs, right?
05:43They've been taken care of for several years, right?
05:47Some even for more than 15 years.
05:49But they're still a bit wild.
05:51Completely different.
05:53Is this typical of other pigweeds here?
05:56No. So we still have...
05:58We also have pigs that, as you said, are very old,
06:01and also quite exposed to people.
06:02Yes.
06:04But they still retain some of their wild instinct.
06:07They're not so trusting of people still.
06:10But Anakin is really different.
06:12He does belly rubs.
06:14And, well, yeah, this is the first time I've encountered this,
06:19in a wild boar.
06:22And this one, this species is very aggressive.
06:25Very territorial and all that.
06:28And yet, look at this guy.
06:29Look, he's still getting a belly rub.
06:32Let's do a belly rub.
06:34Belly rub, belly rub.
06:37Belly rub.
06:39Oh, belly rub.
06:41Belly rub.
06:43Look, he's still closing his eyes.
06:47He's still closing his eyes.
06:49Is that what you want? A belly rub?
06:52A belly rub, baby?
06:54Look, he's still sleeping.
07:00Look at Anakin's tusks.
07:03They're sharp.
07:05And they have a very strong kick.
07:09If he gets hit, he won't lose his teeth in the front.
07:13But strength can also break your bones.
07:15Right?
07:17And, of course, their pointed tusks can injure you.
07:22Okay.
07:24You can go now.
07:26He's sleeping.
07:29He's sleeping.
07:34Visayan warty pigs are critically endangered or endangered in the wild.
07:39This is because of the hunting and loss of their natural habitat.
07:44But, of course, this behavior is one of a kind.
07:48And do not attempt to, let's say, buy a piglet,
07:54just like him,
07:56from whoever will sell you, from the black market.
08:01And then attempt to take care of it in an area just like this.
08:05Hoping that in the future, after seven years,
08:08you will have a warty piglet like this that you can touch.
08:11This is just different.
08:15Right?
08:17This is just one of a kind.
08:25But no matter how happy Anakin's friendliness is,
08:29it's saddening because he won't be able to return to the wild.
08:36In the reserve, there are a lot of warty piglets.
08:41But Anakin won't be one of them.
08:45This is what happens.
08:47When a wild animal has a different behavior already,
08:53I was able to go out, but became so friendly.
08:56We had to make a decision to bring him back here again
08:59because other warty pigs might imitate him.
09:02Be friendly to people.
09:04And you know what happens if they end up in people's villages.
09:08We don't like that.
09:10That defeats the purpose of the study.
09:13So we brought Anakin back here.
09:15Thank you so much for watching Born to be Wild.
