Adelaide Festival Centre to receive major upgrade

The Adelaide Festival Centre in South Australia will receive a major upgrade, as part of a $35 million state government investment. It means the space will have to be closed next year for work to be done.

00:00The Festival Centre here will see major upgrades to its theatres, seating and lighting as a
00:06result of this investment.
00:07Now this is a $35 million investment by the State Government that's also being backed
00:11up by the Adelaide Festival Centre's Trust.
00:14And new seating will be installed in all three of the theatres here, while there will also
00:18be refurbished flooring on the stages in the Dunstan Playhouse and in the Space Theatre.
00:23As well as upgrades for lighting, fire and safety systems across the centre.
00:28These upgrades will mean that there will have to be some closures of these theatres and
00:32that's expected from July and August next year.
00:35Now during that time that we are seeing those closures, the Her Majesty's Theatre will still
00:39be open.
00:40The Festival Centre's Chief Executive, Douglas Gautier, says that he's really grateful that
00:44that recently refurbished Her Majesty's Theatre is open and that it's in a good location for
00:48people to head along to while the theatres here are closed.
00:51And he says that the upgrades here at the Festival Centre will allow Adelaide to show
00:55off its thriving arts scene.
00:57These upgrades are alongside existing work that's been done here at the Festival Plaza
01:01where we've seen really significant upgrades in recent years.
01:04And there is more that's expected to come alongside a plan that is subject to approval
01:09for a second high-rise building here that would have hospitality, retail and office
01:14levels as well.
