Buffalo Water Chairman OJ McFoy discusses the initiation of operations to install equipment necessary for the fluoridation process near the filtration plant at the Colonel Ward Pumping Station in Buffalo
Transcript
00:00We have a diver going in to make sure that we install the proper equipment to make sure that we are all up and running on the thing.
00:08And so, again, we thank you. I want to have Peter really speak about some of the specifics that's going on behind us.
00:14And we want to really thank our contractors here for being timely and making sure that we are getting this project done appropriately and efficiently.
00:22So with that, Peter.
00:23Thank you, Chairman.
00:25Again, my name is Pete Merlo. I'm the Principal Engineer for the City of Buffalo Division of Water.
00:29What you're seeing behind me is one of the final connections that the Chairman referred to for a fluoride implementation project.
00:35What you've seen is a diver gets suited up. He's currently being disinfected.
00:40And he is going to go into a wetted, fully submerged manhole.
00:43And the purpose of that is to do the final connection for the flow meter.
00:47The support extraction device is going in today to allow that meter to be maintained, monitored.
00:53And that will allow us to monitor the amount of fluoride that we're injecting at a point upstream in the manhole just north on the other side of that sidewalk.
01:03This piece will allow us to monitor distributed fluoride ultimately from our operators who control and run the treatment plant.
01:09They monitor all aspects to monitor the quality of our water.
01:13And that will now include fluoride implementation.
01:16He's going to be going in today, fully submerged, making those connections, coming out.
01:22And then probably next week we'll be going into another manhole to the other piping connections as well.
01:27I don't know if you have any questions. I could talk about the history of the project if you want.
01:31This started in January, and we're implementing this.
01:34And we're going to have operating training project start up in August with the goal by the end of the summer to be injecting fluoride back into the City of Buffalo system.
01:42Thank you.
01:44How long has fluoride not been being injected into the water and the importance of having it in the water?
01:51Right now I'm just here to kind of address what's going on with the current project from the implementation which started in January.
01:59That's when we received Department of Health approval to go ahead and implement these changes.
02:04They were on board with the changes and the modifications that were required to be constructed as part of this fluoride implementation project.
02:14Thank you.
02:44Thank you.
