At Niagara Falls, visitors from the United States and Canada are taking in President Donald Trump’s unsolicited suggestion the U.S. annex its neighbor to the north with an air of detached amusement. Do they take the idea seriously? Generally speaking, no. But some citizens of both nations wonder why it’s necessary to pick a fight with one of America’s closest allies when there wasn’t much friction there to begin with.

00:00I don't think it's a good idea.
00:09Canada's been one of our better, one of our best trade partners and just closest relations
00:15country-wise and having that as their own independent nation needs to be maintained,
00:20I feel.
00:21You know, we don't need to try and manifest destiny and gather more land.
00:25We need to partner and work with other countries in a more friendly manner.
00:30I think it's very bold.
00:34I think it's offensive.
00:36I think it's ignorant, but, I mean, he can say what he wants and it's actually bringing
00:47Canadians together right now.
00:49It's pretty much like you're telling them you own their property and they've been there
00:57all their lives, you know, so, and that's kind of harsh in my book.
01:03It seems like it should be another way around that to keep the chaos down, you know, because
01:10all he's doing is creating chaos and making other countries want to hate America.
01:16That's all he's doing right now.
01:19It is very weird, instead of trying to grow relations with the countries around us, especially
01:23those directly connected to us, to basically almost kind of hint at threatening to take
01:29and bring in things that are not wanting to be, so, yeah, not for it.
01:35We're allies.
01:36We love you guys and we're proud of the amicable relationship we have, but we're also proud
01:48to be distinct.
