Motorway Hell on the Highway S01E03 (24 Mar 2023)
Transcript
00:00motorways are fastest widest and busiest roads but when risks are taken that's
00:11one hell of a near miss laws are broken people are just far too impatient or
00:17sheer lunacy takes over one of the most dangerous clips are probably saying is
00:23motorways become the stuff of nightmares you just can't think stupid
00:30it's just dangerous all-out dangerous in this series we'll reveal the shocking
00:40jaw-dropping and just plain frightening incidents all captured on dashcam by the
00:48public in the UK and across the world where incredibly no one was fatally
00:54injured you can hit the brakes as hard as you want that force is pushing you
00:58forward we'll show you our panel of drivers and driving experts reacting to
01:03the mayhem in real time before they reveal what they think really went wrong
01:09some of them have completely failed to look at what's in front of them why they
01:14think things ended in catastrophe the drivers just going too fast for the
01:18conditions and why almost all of this chaos was almost completely and utterly
01:22avoidable it's a recipe for disaster this is how not to drive coming up
01:37dashcams from around the world capture car chaos a van driver in Norfolk hits a
01:43roundabout and goes airborne road rage strikes in the middle of the m60 what
01:52you doing and in Suffolk a lorry causes a domino effect of destruction now not
02:03every weather condition comes with its own set of warning lights clammy parky
02:09and mild are all cruelly ignored but as for fog well you've got your fog lights
02:13and here's why you need them
02:20fuck can be quite scary you know it's quite daunting when the first time you
02:24drive in fog especially in a huge vehicle because you can't slow down as
02:27quick as everybody else apart from extremely heavy rain there aren't many
02:31conditions other than fog where you physically cannot gather the information
02:35from the visual environment around you and where to begin a cautionary tale
02:40about the dangers of driving in foggy weather the Shetlands how to Hebrides
02:44no we're off to Mexico yes they have fog there too and if this clip is anything
02:52to go by some very dozy drivers as well so he's driving up a bit quicker he's
02:58got his phone in his hand which is a big no-no obviously as well as having the
03:03fog limiting the view do you care and attention he hasn't got his full
03:07concentration on what's going on ahead of him I mean it's only a few meters of
03:10visibility he's got there the driver couldn't be breaking more rules of the
03:15road if he tried
03:19and when rules are broken
03:23Wow with the speed that he's approaching the toll even if he'd had
03:34two hands on the wheel he wouldn't have been able to stop that amount of weight
03:38in that amount of times nowhere he can go it's too late he's already committed
03:43the offense and this is why it's so important to have your full and
03:47undivided attention on what's going on around you and he's just gone straight
03:51through it like a knife through butter but that's how fast he was going I mean
03:55if he was going slower he probably would have hit a ballard or the barrier and
03:58like stop pretty much there despite all the damage amazingly the lorry driver
04:04wasn't seriously injured in this incident was he unharmed yeah he was
04:09unharmed because he plowed everything out of the way that got in his way this
04:13has caused criminal damage I don't know what the Mexican laws are like with this
04:17kind of stuff but I'm sure he's gonna get a few fines and potentially jail
04:20term he's got no defense he's just an absolute idiot get him sent down we're
04:29off to Lancashire next and unlike Mexico it's a place no one will be surprised to
04:34see a bit of the white stuff and on the m65 eastbound this driver has just
04:40driven into a right P super you've got no idea what's coming out of that mist
04:46and where there's mist there's the potential for mayhem as the stationary
04:51cars ahead indicate and so they're approaching these vehicles they're
04:56obviously going at a pace where they had enough distance to stop the driver with
05:00the dashcam is switched on and slows down unlike vehicles to their right
05:08to go from that speed to zero behind a HPV you're not going to be able to slow
05:15down the vehicle in that amount of time it's like someone putting up a screen
05:20lifting that screen up and saying well there you go there's a load of parked
05:23cars in front of you but the danger isn't over yet
05:31and the cars keep on coming it was the people who were coming down
05:37further on the outside who were not really adapting to the conditions the
05:41people in the faster lanes the Mercedes driver really wasn't behaving very well
05:46and hit some things everyone else is acting like lemmings and if they're
05:50doing 70 miles an hour the car next to him is potentially doing 70 miles an hour
05:54and they're not adapting to what's going on around them so if you're sitting
05:58there stationary in lane one to three then you're potentially going to become
06:03a hazard to everyone else around you amazingly no one was seriously injured
06:09in this eight-car pileup as we've seen fog is a major issue in fact it's
06:18advisable to leave at least three seconds between you and the car in
06:21front when driving in foggy weather and this next clip from Austin Texas shows
06:27us exactly why you can see that there is light fog because you can see the
06:36effects of the streetlight in the fog but it's not restricting visibility
06:39significantly at the moment starting to thicken now we're hitting a big thick
06:45patch of fog so you can see the fog comes out of nowhere and his visibility
06:50gets reduced within seconds suddenly engulfed by impenetrable fog the dashcam
06:57driver reduces their speed eventually coming to a complete halt but a driver
07:03following behind hasn't been quite so observant and we see hazards and brake
07:08lights and a vehicle in the wrong place on the road
07:14Wow and there he goes sometimes it's not about what's in front of you but what's
07:23behind one minute is normal all of a sudden can't see a thing apart from
07:27brake lights warning lights and then whoever was behind him obviously didn't
07:31even get to see that hence the phrase he didn't have the foggiest and to
07:40avoid finding yourself in a situation like this our panel has some sage words
07:44of advice if you can't see in front of you you've got a drive to a sensible
07:49speed so you can react so the less you see as in the thicker the fog gets the
07:53slower your car should be moving don't think of the speed limit think of what's
07:57gonna keep you safe the highway code states when visibility is reduced to a
08:02hundred meters or less let's help ourselves to see and be seen once that
08:06visibility drops get that speed down get those fog lights on coming up we'll see
08:14drivers lose their tempers I mean who would stop in the middle of the motorway
08:20to have around somebody and trucks lose their balance no he's not gonna pop the
08:25bridge
08:40it's tempting to go too fast I mean the fact that cars can go faster than 70
08:46miles an hour really doesn't help but how fast is too fast well it's not always
08:52as simple as faster than the speed limit to help answer this question allow me to
08:57present Exhibit A a roundabout on the a11 in Norfolk filmed by a biker with a
09:02dashcam helmet I know this road it's on the way to Great Yarmouth you've got
09:07quite a sharp curve on the approach to the roundabout so you need to be doing
09:12an appropriate speed to be able to make the turn those markers there better warn
09:17you so it's telling you 300 yards you're approaching a junction you've got the
09:20yellow stripes across the floor which is always going to indicate to you you've
09:24been traveling at fast speed it's time to start slowing down on the left you've
09:29got a massive sign saying you're approaching a roundabout you might argue
09:33they're all fairly obvious clues that there's a massive roundabout ahead yet
09:38seemingly not obvious enough for the silver van driver approaching this
09:43gentleman is still accelerating on the way to the roundabout and he's within a
09:46hundred yards and he's still accelerating at high speed he's in a
09:51hurry isn't he he's come up the inside of the vehicle with the camera I do not
09:56understand why he wouldn't have slowed down even tries to undertake at that
09:59last point at that moment in time it realizes a roundabout and it's at this
10:04moment his nose is messed up oh oh my god
10:12up and over you go remarkably the gravity defying driver and his friends
10:18escape with just minor cuts and bruises he was really really lucky not to be
10:23killed or seriously injured we've got excess speed we've got undertaking we've
10:28got poor observation and ultimately we've got a van in midair but the 18
10:34year old driver was brought down to earth shortly after with a 12 month
10:37driving ban and if for some unfathomable reason that wasn't enough to convince
10:45you of the perils of driving too fast here's another one to hammer it home
10:49this time we're on a slip road off the m25 in Hertfordshire so we've got what
10:56appears to be five lanes of traffic being filtered in three different
10:59directions what was that I don't want to give you any spoilers Richard but
11:05keep watching that car the driver is a well-known athlete definitely not a
11:10racing driver driving like that no it's a Premier League footballer clearly late
11:15for training and his exit he's in the wrong lane for a start so I don't know
11:21where they've come from or what they're doing that looks like somebody who is
11:26driving an unfamiliar vehicle that's a lot bigger and heavier and handles
11:30differently to what they used to it's got a beautiful car but don't know how
11:34to control that speed of it and it's a simple fact is you're driving too fast
11:38for that vehicles weight so the weight has gone to the opposite side of the
11:41cars it's doing now and it's a classic understeer so the vehicle now is
11:45technically out of control it's getting towards the curb oh you don't want to be
11:50doing now I'm not here oh oh my god and he's gone all the way on to the verge on
11:58the near side of the road facing the wrong way Wow our footballer was lucky
12:04enough to avoid injury but let's see what VAR thinks of his skills
12:10says his own fault number one for being in total wrong lane and then trying to
12:18change direction last second you're gonna lose control of something that
12:21that high that powerful I think you should stick to playing football really
12:26this guy might be good at taking corners on a pitch but he's definitely no good
12:30at taking corners on a roundabout I tell you that now on to Suffolk where speed
12:39is about to send someone's day sideways big old truck coming through the corner
12:47beautiful clear bit of road nice weather visibility is good the Sun is out this
12:52shouldn't be a problem for any driver really unless you happen to be the one
12:56in this truck here what you doing so trucks coming around the corner and it's
13:02just going too fast it's simple as that as well as committing one other gigantic
13:07no-no you can see the traffic light changing for the car we're on board with
13:13so that would mean that he's gone for a red light to have done that he's what
13:19some would call an amber gambler he's just thought right risk it for a biscuit
13:23foot down I'm gonna get through this light but we all know gambling is a mugs
13:27game as this lorry driver is about to discover as he veers towards a bridge
13:31crossing the motorway beneath which remarkably is filmed by another driver
13:36with a dashcam you can do it you can do it slow down as you made it as you made
13:43it no he's not going past the bridge
13:52the truck driver tried to take the roundabout a little bit too quick for the
13:57load and splat onto the side it's just like he's trying to break last minute
14:04and in doing so he's just caught it's just caused his whole load to go over
14:07but the carnage isn't over yet a car on the road below is about to get one hell
14:14of a fright Christ Almighty Wow wreckage from the accident rains down onto the
14:24motorway below this debris falling down and hitting the car will have just come
14:29like a bullet out of the blue luckily they're alright no windscreens been
14:34damaged and it looks like they're on the way luckily no one was seriously hurt
14:40and the lorry driver was given nine points on his license for careless
14:44driving which along with his existing points resulted in a six-month driving
14:48ban and if that's not reason enough not to put your foot down here's some simple
14:54but sensible advice from our esteemed panel don't drive fast on way to a
15:00roundabout it's a simple thing a little bit of speed causes vehicle to get out
15:04of control and then people could be injured just don't do it red lights for
15:09a reason if you stop at red traffic lights let the traffic go in front of
15:12you and crack on with your day don't be an amber gambler it's just not worth the
15:18risk as this lorry driver found out
15:25next up road rage let's face it we've all lost our temper behind the wheel at
15:32some point whether it's that middle lane hogger the painfully slow Sunday driver
15:37or the impatient boy racer tailgating you from behind but whilst most of us
15:43mutter a profanity or consider visualizing it with gestures there are
15:48some who take it to extremes it happens all the time all the time people are
15:53bibbing bibbing bibbing getting angry get that irate all logical thinking goes
15:59out of the window they can breathe to see red mist and they feel that they
16:02need to right this wrong and prove their self as the victor is primitive
16:12arguably a bit like these two drivers in the US state of New Jersey a silver
16:19saloon car and white truck appear to be having a right old ding-dong in the fast
16:24lane so it looks like we're on some sort of
16:27motorway or freeway don't know how long this has been going on but you can see
16:32they're both agitated by each other this car behind just wants to overtake and
16:36the truck is obviously not allowing him to do it it's wanting to get past and it
16:42can't get past so he's had to break heavily you see how close he is because
16:47that's why he keeps touching his brakes look touching his brakes touching his
16:51brakes definitely tailgating this guy whilst that's a big no-no the truck
16:57driver seems to be giving as good as he gets by not only refusing to move out of
17:02the fast lane but apparently speeding up every time the saloon tries to overtake
17:07him from the inside okay instead of him just moving out the way and just
17:13relaxing he's now playing a game look vehicles are meant to be thrown left and
17:19right at high speed such as 70 miles an hour you're gonna come unstuck your
17:22tires aren't gonna stick your vehicle's gonna start to swerve and fishtail so
17:26there he goes all the way onto the outside lane but as the silver car veers
17:34back across the carriageway the truck appears to speed up again to stop him
17:38from getting past oh he's cut back in and then because the gaps got smaller
17:46he's just touched that black car and spun out of control
17:53Wow they're both to blame it's ridiculous the driver of the silver
18:00saloon has paid the price for the road rage standoff and the driver of the
18:04truck also shoulders some responsibility for this incident he
18:09literally at that point here he could have just relaxed just let him get in
18:13front of you but instead you've decided to speed up close in so he can't get
18:18that gap and you've created an accident if you're not in a rush to get where
18:21you're going let them go if that's what they want to do let them go the saloon
18:26car was a complete write-off but miraculously the driver wasn't seriously
18:31hurt and the driver who was filming the whole incident has zero compassion I
18:39mean that's just cold
18:45here in the UK things can get a little heated on the road too and it seems hell
18:51hath no fury like a van driver scorned as this next clip on the m60 near
18:57Manchester is about to prove what you're doing perhaps up by an earlier
19:04altercation the driver cuts in front of the lorry at close distance and slams on
19:09his brakes charming this guy has pulled in close in front of this vehicle and
19:16then the other vehicles pulled out and overtaken him and there's some clearly
19:21some shouting and gesturing going on at this point the truck tries to overtake
19:27but the man with the van isn't done yet oh there is and the situation escalates
19:34from bad to bonkers Oh easy as the van driver comes to a dead standstill Oh
19:42straddled across two lanes of the fast-moving motorway what an idiot it's
19:49just dangerous all-out dangerous I mean who would stop in the middle of
19:54the motorway to have valve somebody
19:59doesn't know what he's doing and all the rational thoughts have all gone and all
20:02he wants to be sure that is angry with the other road user this guy in the van
20:08is clearly not thinking about any of the consequences because I wouldn't want to
20:11have my head sticking out the window into the fast lane in the middle of the
20:14motorway he's putting everyone's life in danger that's on the road something
20:18could be coming at high speed behind them and he's got no care it's disgusting
20:22behavior and it's going on a criminal route rather than road traffic route
20:26which is exactly what happened when this footage finally ended up in court the
20:31driver of the van was given an eight month suspended prison sentence 200
20:36hours of community service an 18 month driving ban and ordered to take an
20:41arguably much-needed anger management course thankfully though our panel have
20:49a few tips to help us avoid turning from Bruce Banner into the Hulk if you make a
20:55mistake on the road try and apologize put your hand up acknowledge that you've
20:59made that mistake because that will help them to feel better about it and make
21:03them feel that you didn't do it on purpose and that you've recognized what
21:06you've done and if you get into this situation do not interact and if it
21:12means going at five miles an hour on the hard shoulder got five miles an hour on
21:15the hard shoulder but do not interact with the offending vehicle at all and if
21:20not police will come and bang your legs together
21:24metaphorically speaking of course coming up from late breaking pileups he's been
21:34hit the car behind that hits it's like a domino effect it's literally one after
21:38another to caravan in chaos that's a final destination moment right there
21:49in my as yet unpublished tome how not to drive my favorite chapter is called
22:05late-breaking bad and it's not just because the spin-off potential is
22:09massive but just how bad is late-breaking we begin our journey of
22:15discovery on a rainy day in Tennessee on a busy interstate to Nashville a
22:20Tesla driver as all his fancy cameras running as he autopilots down the
22:25freeway the modern world a because of Elon Musk's way of doing things these
22:29seem to be rolling movie studio so we've got amazing number of angles he's got
22:34every angle of his car covered apart from underneath that it's ridiculous the
22:39amount of cameras on that car as you can see when he's going quite fast the
22:43surface where he flicks off at the back of the car these road conditions don't
22:46look to be a particular problem yes a bit wet but look the visibility is good
22:50the Sun is out this shouldn't be a problem for any driver really maybe not
22:54for you Sam but someone's clearly come a cropper up ahead so there's a build-up
23:01of traffic so everyone's literally slowed down like almost to the point of
23:05stopping and whilst the Tesla driver has the luxury of a high-tech automatic
23:10braking system some cars approaching from behind in the fast lane don't
23:14appear to be so fortunate it's not gonna go well is it look at the cars coming in
23:19behind they're just not reacting nobody's slowing down in time if you can
23:24see that build-up of traffic why would you not be slowing down already but slow
23:30down they don't and there's no prizes for guessing what happens next Wow that's
23:44just drivers not reacting isn't it huge some completely unnecessary shunt as
23:49well the gray SUV appears to spot the stationary traffic late and moves into
23:54the middle lane to avoid a collision unfortunately a silver pickup and a
23:58white car behind both fail to register that the gray pickup has stopped and all
24:03hell breaks loose that white car just didn't react and then just starts
24:09piling in it's like a domino effect it's literally one after another both of them
24:15are obviously not following the right procedures definitely not got a right
24:17following distance definitely not breaking in time the four cars that left
24:23it too late to hit their brakes are now in various states of disrepair this is a
24:28chain reaction one thing leads to another leads to another leads to
24:33another and you end up with a big mess at the end but miraculously the Tesla
24:38driver sensed the danger change lanes and drove off unscathed this is very
24:44clever what the Tesla driver does he takes control because he can see what's
24:47happening all the other drivers are coming in and having their own crashes
24:50forget this I'm out of here I'm pulling off the road which frankly is exactly
24:55what I would do
24:59back in the UK where most of us are still relying on our eyes to spot a
25:04traffic jam it's raining of course here we are on one of my least favorite roads
25:09in the world the M1 traffic's busy approaching what could be unlucky
25:13Junction 13 there's a little bit of rain on the windscreen their surface is a
25:19little bit a little bit damp on the ground a gantry sign appears to be
25:24warning drivers of a hazard further down the road and the cars up ahead are
25:28slowing and starting to bunch particularly in the right-hand fast lane
25:33you can see the braking effect from the vehicles ahead their first vehicle
25:38brakes the next one breaks the next one breaks and that travels back at roughly
25:42about 12 mile an hour and before you know it they've come to a stop when
25:47traffic starts to slow and bunch you still need space around your vehicle you
25:52have to allow enough room to compensate for other drivers who may choose to
25:57drive very close behind you advice the cars in the fast lane could do with
26:02following you can see the brake lights coming on on that red BMW and the silver
26:08car behind that extremely late to react on the footbrake at what's going on here
26:13with barely a gnat's whisker between all the cars in the fast lane you don't have
26:18to have a crystal ball to predict what happens next
26:22whoa ah that's what can happen yep you guessed it another late break has gone
26:31into the back of the nearest car creating a metal five-car concertina
26:36everyone's who had an impact there is is to blank they're all following too close
26:40to each other the driver behind in this case in the BMW paid no attention to
26:44whatsoever to what was going on in front of them and piled into the back of that
26:48line of cars bad things happen if we're not forward planning we're not paying
26:52attention to the road ahead of us if you translated that into Latin it could be
26:57the motto on Paul's family crest now pay close attention to this next case of
27:06late braking as all might not be as it seems there's not a traffic jam in sight
27:10but this dashcam shows a truck driver getting up close to a blue Peugeot so
27:18it's your carriage we're very close a vehicle in front car following this blue
27:22car is way too close and though the road ahead is clear the Peugeot suddenly
27:27slows down what's he breaking for there's nothing in front very heavy
27:31braking from that Peugeot whoever's following this blue cars probably
27:35looking beyond the blue car and thinking there's no need for him to start
27:37breaking as other cars in the slow lane drive past what is this guy doing what
27:48heck what you doing he slowed down and just come to a stop you can see where
27:55this is going can't you
28:06that's what's gonna happen if you stop for no good reason and while the truck
28:11behind managed to stop whatever was behind the truck clearly didn't and well
28:15the result was pretty clear don't get me wrong the car following this blue car
28:19is way too close but there's nothing that that blue car needs to stop for
28:23this situation was clearly caused by the Peugeot and the car that hits or the
28:28vehicle it hits behind from the rear which don't ever see is really not to
28:33blame because this was a sudden harsh braking at the last minute and this
28:38situation was caused by bad driving from that Peugeot hugely dangerous activity
28:43while we don't know exactly what happened here sometimes unexplained
28:47braking means only one thing listen I could be wrong here but my personal
28:54opinion is it's an insurance scam there's nothing that that blue car needs
28:58to stop for could this be a case of what is known as cash for crash where the
29:03driver of the stopped car is actually hoping for an accident in order to claim
29:07through the insurance person that's driving behind is always going to be
29:12charged for it so people see it as a money-making scheme the personal injury
29:17payments that get are quite significant probably a few thousand pounds for an
29:21injured neck or back or similar fortunately dash cams can help rumble
29:26cash for crash criminals as cops can use the footage as evidence hundreds of
29:31people doing this we look at the open bit road there and we'd say there's no
29:35reason for you to stop in a road where you observations are obstructed in any
29:39way shape or form and then we look at all the evidence that presents itself
29:42the skid marks and then we look at prosecution whatever the reason for this
29:46blue car to stop like this ex-traffic cop Ben is clear on one thing it should
29:52be punished and it should be prosecuted no excuse that whatsoever so how can you
30:00avoid getting snarled up in crashes caused by late braking if you see
30:05there's a car upon car upon car start breaking early put some hazard lights on
30:09give people a warning what's going on behind you when we have got that slower
30:13moving traffic ahead of us let's just increase that stopping distance just to
30:18give ourselves that time to see what's going on in the distance keep yourself
30:22safe guys stay a bit further back and just expect that unexpected at all times
30:31on to caravans next a curious relic from a bygone era a vehicle that reeks of the
30:37kind of holiday that might require another holiday to get over it but some
30:42people love a staycation on wheels and some people don't I don't understand
30:47people take caravans with them I don't get it I'm a motorcyclist myself and all
30:51they do is cause hindrance to everybody they're always blowing over on the
30:54motorway all the time that's why everyone hates them because you're seeing
30:56fish trailing if they go too slow and I don't like him get it off the road now
31:03so I'm sorry for everyone that's got a caravan out there and you might begin to
31:09understand Ben's frustration as this next incident takes place on the a629 in
31:15his home county of North Yorkshire I know this road very well it should be
31:21coming up to around about in a minute the vehicle with the camera is
31:24progressing quite normally down the road beautiful clear bit of road nice
31:29weather no obstructions the car passes a first caravan but it's the second now
31:35exiting a roundabout in the distance that's cause for concern so what's he
31:41doing
31:43oh wow it's just a massive torpedo uncontrollably going down the road
31:58they've lost their load off the back and then the point-of-view vehicle luckily
32:03avoided it it was a near miss for this car but unfortunately for the car behind
32:08they weren't so lucky the caravans gone straight across into the pausing
32:16carriageway and it's got head-on into the other vehicle from what I can see
32:21that's a whole hunk of steel there and it's just smashed it to pieces but could
32:27anything have been done to avoid the collision to put it bluntly hell yeah
32:31when you're putting a caravan on your car you need to make sure it's on the
32:34coupling properly right are you listening carefully a coupling is the
32:39primary connection between the towing vehicle and the caravan but there's also
32:43a secondary coupling in case of failure they should have put their secondary
32:48coupling on so that if they're having hitch failed there was a tether between
32:53a towing vehicle in the caravan is a legal requirement and for a very good
32:57reason clearly over on the m1 near Manchester a driver with a dashcam
33:06captures another caravan traveling in the left-hand lane weather conditions
33:13are good you've got a car and a caravan traveling down the carriageway in lane
33:18one with the articulated vehicle traveling behind them the road
33:22conditions are there a good there's no water on the road decent light in it's
33:26during the day there's great visibility but not all is as breezy as it seems
33:32that lorry is following that caravan way too close at that speed if anyone reacts
33:39really bad in front of you you're not gonna have a lot of time to react so I
33:44guess now would be a really bad time for a car in front of the caravan to come to
33:48a standstill
33:56Oh dear. What the heck. I thought so. That is like a locomotive train hitting through the back of you if you
34:07want to know how a caravans made it's with all those pieces that are on the
34:10floor there look at this there's a toilet oh my gosh it's lost it's loop
34:19is that you can literally see it that's the toilet seat on the floor that's the
34:24display cabinet on the floor everything there's no holiday going on for that
34:29person now is that oh dear if the lorries catching them up and before he
34:35knows it he's through the back of him there is a little bit of blame to had on
34:40the Arctic driver on that caravan he should have been seeing the brake lights
34:45come on aggressively there was no reason for anyone to be driving like an
34:48absolute muppet so this is where human error comes into play the caravan was
34:53completely destroyed and caused this section of the m1 near Mansfield to be
34:57closed for hours as the cleanup operation began
35:03staying near Manchester which appears to be a caravan hotspot we find ourselves
35:08on the m60 looking at this pink palace rolling along in the left-hand lane I
35:14mean that trial it just looks like it's long to mr. blobby at one point all
35:18lanes are busy it's caused by quite a good following distance caravan towing
35:24on the left-hand side smoke then starts to pour out the back of the pink caravan
35:29why is there smoke coming off oh dear the smoke comes off and the guy
35:35beside the caravan moves away straight away he knows something is gonna go
35:39wrong there and he was right something has flown off of the caravan was that a
35:45wheel has come off there that is the wheel that has come off of the caravan
35:51which then rolls into the fast lane into the path of this red Fiesta that's like
35:57a speeding bullet flying oh dear that's really not good
36:05that poor Fiesta just zooming up on the outside line like that he's had
36:09absolutely no time to react because the trailer is going at such a speed the
36:13only time he's managed to break is when he's seen this wheel in front of his
36:17face that's a final destination moment right there just one will fly enough and
36:24look at the mayhem it can cause luckily all drivers emerged unscathed so if this
36:31hasn't put you off caravaning for life our panel have got some top tips to
36:35ensure that your toilet seat doesn't end up on the fast lane of the motorway when
36:40you're putting a caravan in your car you need to make sure it's on the coupling
36:43properly and it's actually secured with its secondary wire around it so if it
36:47does fall off the coupling and your toe ball it's actually going to remain on
36:51the back of your car they need to be stored correctly and when it does come back to
36:56regular use that they're inspected correctly as well prior to attaching
37:01them to the vehicle you've got to check your vehicle before you're driving on a
37:05motorway or just driving in general is your responsibility your car your
37:09caravan your responsibility every part of it coming up the drivers who like to
37:16have a good old butchers at what's happening on the hard shoulder it is
37:20morbid curiosity it's the fact of all that what's happened over there and the
37:24carnage caused when their eyes are taken off the road oh my god oh oh my god
37:40as a species we're fascinated by the unusual we know we shouldn't rub an egg
37:47and have a peep incidents on the road but sometimes we just can't help
37:51ourselves but since you're not in a moving vehicle I'll forgive you just
37:55this once it is morbid curiosity it's the fact of all what's happened over
38:00there well thank God it's not been to me gives them something to talk about guess
38:03what I've seen today my way at work there's a sort of novelty factor about
38:07it but all too often the rubber necker can become the rubber necked as these
38:12next stories will prove so sit back and rub an egg at this lot safe in the
38:17knowledge that the only fallout you might encounter is a spilled drink over
38:25in the u.s. in Sacramento a local news crew is filming at the site of an
38:29earlier collision which has blocked two lanes of a usually fast-moving freeway
38:33and it seems the incident has attracted viewers from the other side of the
38:37motorway to which has also slowed down the emergency vehicle lights are designed
38:43to take people's attention unfortunately the flip side of that is you know they
38:47do take people's attention even when people are driving along on the other
38:51side of the road if you're in a rubber-necking situation you're in a
38:54very dangerous place to be if you stare to the right for three seconds you don't
38:58know what's going on in front of you you're asking for trouble and whilst
39:03filming the original accident the news crew just captured the tail end of
39:06what's happening on the other carriageway oh there we go oh my god
39:18it looks like there were one vehicle in lane three and then it's instantly been
39:23hit from behind by a white four before white ones gone into the central
39:28reservation all else breaking loose on the carriageway having hit the white
39:34four-by-four the other white car lies helplessly straddled across two lanes of
39:38the freeway if drivers were distracted before there's an awful lot more for
39:43them to look at now you can obviously this roads gonna be blocked you can see
39:47the cars in millet road with smoke now of it the drivers could see that but
39:51only if they were concentrating on driving unfortunately an already
39:56dangerous situation has now gotten a whole lot worse
40:01oh my god and he's now been hit anyone else want to get involved my god
40:11so those people are clearly not looking at what's in front of them until the
40:16last minute by the time you've taken your eyes off the road then look back
40:19and see brake lights the chances are it's gonna be too late there's that
40:22first point of when you should see the brake lights you've missed it you too
40:26it's too late I'm not gonna be able to react in time there's so many cars on
40:30that bit of road as well it's just like tempting bowling alley fortunately
40:33nobody else goes for the strike and the incident that began on the other side of
40:37the carriageway has resulted in six vehicles needing roadside recovery
40:45over to France now and on a motorway near Paris a collision has caused a huge
40:52tailback but sacre bleu one passing driver apparently isn't satisfied
40:58they've seen enough what you doing the vehicle is actually reversing that for
41:05me is just ludicrous there's no words to describe what he's doing it fast
41:10approaching the reversing car is an unsuspecting truck you've got one or
41:15two things gonna happen you're either gonna have to slam on your brakes we
41:18have maybe a possibility of hitting him or you're gonna have to move lanes last
41:23second and then you're not gonna be able to check what's beside you
41:27oh my god
41:32Wow thanks to the truck drivers cat-like reactions they narrowly avoid a
41:38crash but the elephant in the room is why on earth would the driver be
41:43reversing up the fast lane of the motorway maybe they thought that
41:49somebody in their family was involved in the crash or something like that I can't
41:53think that anything less would would motivate somebody to do something as
41:57risky as that that white car that's reversing hopefully I never see him on
42:05you and me both next stop on our global rubbernecking tour is this freeway north
42:12of Tokyo in Japan police are dealing with the aftermath of another collision
42:17and traffic in the fast lane opposite isn't behaving as it should because of
42:24obviously the incident on the other side everyone wants to slow down and have a
42:28look and see what's going on you can see everyone right now look ain't slow
42:31because they just want to have a nose going slow in a fast lane just to have a
42:35look it's just it just beggars belief especially when you need fast lane to
42:38look into your right-hand side but while most cars seem to be following suit and
42:43slowing down for a quick peep one car at the very back doesn't appear to have got
42:47the memo and realizing they've not got enough room to break the car makes a
42:53last-ditch attempt to switch lanes there he goes look but with devastating results
43:02Wow someone wasn't paying attention there
43:10black car comes in from the rear pays no attention then goes in the lane to and
43:15hits the white goods vehicle I don't even think he's paid attention to
43:19anything what's happening in front of you drivers rubbernecking of course the
43:23traffic to bunch resulting in a multiple vehicle incident in just a matter of
43:27seconds because they didn't break in time the driver of the black car will
43:32shoulder the blame for the incident the white goods vehicle just in one place
43:37at one time but mr. black cars got a pay for all insurance and all damages so
43:42that's not premium next year in it so next time you're tempted to slow down
43:46and have a good old butchers here's some sage advice from our panel if you stare
43:52to the right for three seconds you don't know what's going on in front of you so
43:56if you're gonna look glance glance back to where you're there you're looking
43:59further down the road you can see the first car slowed down second one slowing
44:03down you'd be able to wrap to react to it a lot better than just waiting for
44:06brake lights directly in front of you simple thing is distance we call it
44:11tires and tarmac if you can't see people's tires and tarmac in front of
44:15you you're driving too close and there's a thing called two-second rule only a
44:18full brakes a two-second rule so if you're traveling too close this is what's
44:22gonna go on so keep your distance keep your observations and keep your
44:25planning clear next time find out what happens when people nod off what a way
44:37to wake up a this trucker wishes he could turn the wind off you know there's
44:41some serious wind going on there I mean it doesn't get much more scarier than
44:45that and this guy very nearly falls off and you can see that next Friday at 8
44:56train to fight one man but facing another in a last-minute change Lyndon
45:01Arthur faces Boris Crichton in live world championship boxing at 10 before
45:06that Nick Knowles bought the sleeper train for a spectacular journey to
45:09Hanoi in brand new amazing railway adventures next
