00:00Welcome to the world premiere of the new Porsche 911 in Stuttgart.
00:06Since its birth, the Porsche 911 has caused a sensation by reinventing itself
00:11and repeatedly setting new standards for sports cars with technical innovations,
00:15but at the same time remained true to itself.
00:18Today I have quite a few special treats for you.
00:20Iconic cars, as well as great guests, fascinating tech and not forgetting nail-biting race action.
00:26But first up, we will be talking to Frank Moser,
00:29who is the man responsible behind the two-door sports cars at Porsche.
00:57Porsche 911
01:08Frank, the 911, the icon of the brand.
01:11How big of a challenge was it for you to take it to the next level?
01:14It's always a huge challenge,
01:16because we need to bridge the gap between shaping the future of the 911
01:20and maintaining as much as possible of the unique DNA.
01:23Personally, I'm very excited to see what you've done.
01:26Here it is, the new 911 Carrera Cabriolet.
01:45It's a stunning car.
01:47Now, the first thing that strikes me when I look at the car,
01:50there's only one main headlight.
01:52And correct me if I'm wrong, no more side lights on the front bumper.
01:55Overall, on the front end, we are going for a more modern and cleaner look.
01:59The main highlight there is the new HD Matrix headlight.
02:04For the first time with one of our two-door sports cars,
02:06you can choose the HD Matrix headlights with 32,000 individually controlled LEDs.
02:13I'm a fan of this. The red light bar, it's new, right?
02:16Yes. The LED arc runs seamlessly from one side to the other without interruption.
02:24It seems bolder, wider to me.
02:26And overall, yes, subtle, but important changes when it comes to the iconic design.
02:32The interior, it's modern, even a little futuristic.
02:36The first feature you can see is the new 12.6-inch curved digital display.
02:43You can choose from seven different screens.
02:45It's a complete new driver experience.
02:48And you know, I couldn't miss this, the start button.
02:51It's just like in the Porsche GT race cars.
02:53And of course, it's on the left side next to the steering wheel.
02:56And the mode switch comes as standard now even in the 911 Carrera.
03:00We're actually making a lot of feature standard that used to be optional.
03:04But let's talk some numbers.
03:06I know a lot of people buy this car because of its performance.
03:09Yes. The flat-six twin-turbo engine is a little stronger than before.
03:13We've gone to 394 horses and 450 Nm of torque.
03:18And with more engine power, bigger brakes are useful.
03:21And so we increased the size of the discs.
03:29The 911 Carrera Cabriolet, it's an absolute highlight.
03:33New technologies have continuously defined the milestones of this iconic sports car.
03:38Well, today we're going to add another technological masterpiece to this impressive line-up.
03:44These cars embody technological innovations.
03:47It seemed controversial at the time.
03:49But really, looking back, it proves the foresight of Porsche Engineering.
03:54Tell us more.
03:56This is where the 911 story begins.
03:58Back in the 60s.
03:59Instead of further developing the 356, Porsche decided to construct a completely new car.
04:05An innovation with 130 horsepower.
04:08Incredible power for the time.
04:10Well, thus creating an icon to be, right?
04:12I mean, this really set the bar for sports cars and their performance levels.
04:25Our first water-cooled 911 from 1997.
04:29This technology allowed for more efficient cooling and Porsche was able to meet higher emission standards.
04:35This car has at least 300 horsepower.
04:41And for some, going water-cooled was blasphemous, wasn't it?
04:44But still, this car is an essential stepping stone to the 911 success story.
04:49Absolutely.
04:50Anything we do is driven by the desire to deliver in terms of performance.
04:54And now it's time to add another milestone.
04:59The new 911 Carrera GTS
05:17This is it.
05:18The new 911 Carrera GTS.
05:21It's beautiful.
05:22I mean, what a way to present the car.
05:24She's great, but quite different from the car we saw just now.
05:27That's because the GTS features active aerodynamics.
05:31You can see the 10 vertical adjustable flaps here at the front.
05:35And look at the wheels.
05:37The wheels have the typical GTS central locking system.
05:42And the inside, it looks more sporty.
05:45Absolutely.
05:46It's the typical GTS interior with race tags and the contrast stitchings.
05:51I've heard that it's a hybrid car now.
05:53Doesn't that add too much additional weight to a sports car?
05:56No, absolutely not.
05:58It's a very special hybrid, focused on performance, maximum boost and only very little additional weight.
06:05What is the secret behind it?
06:07We wanted a solution that really enhances performance while keeping the weight down.
06:12All while changing the architecture as little as possible, so we can stay true to the character of the 911.
06:18And how did you do it?
06:19In the rear, there's the absolutely new, powerful flat six, attached to the PDK, which now has an integrated electric motor.
06:28In the front, we have a compact high-voltage battery.
06:33And finally, there's an electric motor in the turbocharger, and that makes it magic.
06:40So the hybrid system is not meant to extend the range of driving, but to boost performance.
06:46So what's the power output of the whole system?
06:49The 911 Carrera GTS has a whopping 541 horsepower.
06:5461 horsepower more than the previous car.
06:57It delivers 610 Nm of torque and has a top speed of 312 km per hour.
07:04And most importantly, the weight of the car is 1595 kg.
07:10That means only 50 kg more than before.
07:13Those are some impressive numbers, but I want to know more about the hybrid.
07:16Thomas Brandl is one of our masterminds behind the drivetrain system. He will give you all the details.
07:23Hi Thomas.
07:24Hi Claire.
07:25Tell me, the 911 Carrera GTS, it's a hybrid now. What did you do?
07:29The essential innovation is the electric turbocharger on the flat six engine.
07:34It can do two different things.
07:36It delivers compressed air immediately to the engine to reduce the turbo lag to a minimum.
07:41And second, it recovers heat energy out of the exhaust gas to add even more power to the drivetrain.
07:46Does that mean as a driver I have to activate it?
07:49Not at all. The system reacts to throttle and brake only.
07:53You can visualize it like a puzzle with the flat six engine and the electric turbocharger,
08:00the e-motor in the PDK and the high-performance battery in the front.
08:04When the control units put the piece together, what you get is a very exciting drive.
08:09So it automatically shuttles through the combinations depending on how I put my foot down?
08:14Exactly. When you need more power, the system reacts within split seconds,
08:18giving you more boost and torque fill up to 150 Nm for a faster and better acceleration.
08:24Of course, we can do mechanical recuperation when the car is slowing down or braking.
08:28And my favorite feature is the high-performance feature,
08:31when you use the turbocharger to release extra energy running on full throttle or even on top speed.
08:38So even in this operating state, the turbocharger is able to recover energy,
08:43to put it on the e-motor and, if necessary, the battery joins in to put even more energy
08:50and releasing all the 541 horses.
08:53Thomas, that sounds like some amazing precision engineering.
08:56Thank you for that deep dive.
08:57But I've promised everyone for some race action.
09:00Unfortunately, we do have Matt Watson and a certain former Formula One driver
09:05and sports car world champion who are going to line up the 911 Carrera GTS
09:10and go head-to-head with its predecessor.
09:12Thomas, how do you think this will go?
09:14Let me put it this way.
09:15Spoken like a true engineer.
09:16Well, let's take a look and see how this goes.
09:20I'm super excited because I'm sat on a runway in the brand-new 911 Carrera GTS
09:26and next to me is the previous generation 911 Carrera GTS.
09:30And we're going to have a drag race to see how their performance compares over the standing quarter mile.
09:35So to give the previous generation model a fighting chance,
09:38we're going to have a drag race.
09:41So to give the previous generation model a fighting chance,
09:44we've got someone to drive that car who has a bit of experience in racing
09:48and racing Porsches in particular.
09:51Let's go over to him.
09:53Hey, Mark. How are you doing?
09:55Very good, mate. Very good.
09:57So what do you think is going to happen here?
10:00Have you got a chance?
10:02I'm born ready, but I'm a bit nervous about what you're in.
10:05Looks quick.
10:06And so you should be.
10:08So, well, let's see how this plays out, right?
10:11Yeah, you've got plenty of experience, but so have I.
10:14And obviously, it's all going to be down to skill
10:16and nothing to do with the cars at all or the new technology.
10:20It's going to have everything to do with it.
10:22Yeah, well, you need a lot of talent to drive in a straight line, mate.
10:25So you're well versed in that.
10:27You're well versed in that.
10:29Yeah, let's see who can press the accelerator the hardest.
10:32Come on.
10:33Three, two, one, go.
10:35Three, two, one.
10:41Yes!
10:42Come on!
10:45Wow!
10:46That hooked up.
10:54Yeah, Mark.
10:55What do you think about my driving skills?
10:58I do like your anticipation, son.
11:00What we're going to do now is have a rolling race over the half mile.
11:03So we'll do a roll-on in second gear from 50 kilometres an hour.
11:07Are you ready?
11:08Let's go, Matt. Sounds good. Everything's ready here.
11:11Okay, come on, then.
11:14Let's get into second, get to 50.
11:16Right, here we go.
11:17Three, two, one, go.
11:21Whoa!
11:23Come on!
11:26Oh, my gosh!
11:29Oh!
11:32I am loving this!
11:44How was that for you, Mark?
11:46It was wonderful for me.
11:49Yeah.
11:50I can't match you, mate.
11:52Needed a little bit more throttle bottom end.
11:55Well, that was fun.
11:57I'll tell you what, though.
11:59The data doesn't lie.
12:03Oh, Frank.
12:04I didn't expect that the hybrid system would have that much of an impact on the quarter mile.
12:08That's simply testament to how good the new T-Hybrid drivetrain is.
12:13Well, I was going to say, a drag race, it's nice.
12:16But how does it perform on a track when you combine acceleration with lateral performance?
12:22Of course, we put all our cars on the test track.
12:25NĆ¼rburgring Nordschleife is one of our preferred test tracks.
12:28So, we put Jƶrg behind the wheel.
12:31Have a look.
12:38With the hybridization, the response feels almost like that of a naturally aspirated engine.
12:42You step on the gas and it accelerates immediately, which is what you want as a driver, especially on the racetrack.
12:48The work that the engineers in Weissacht accomplish is impressive.
12:51What they achieve from generation to generation is a real pleasure as a driver.
12:57Frank, that GTS badge is well deserved.
12:59What a spectacular time.
13:01It is 8.7 seconds faster than the predecessor.
13:04And to bring all the power to the road, we optimized the chassis.
13:08We also increased the size of the rear tires to 315 mm.
13:13But there was a wing on the car, right?
13:15You're absolutely right. That was the optional aero kit.
13:18And what about the suspension?
13:20The refined sports suspension and the rear wheel steering, that becomes a standard now,
13:24contribute immensely to the optimized performance of the car.
13:28And if I'm not wrong, you also drove the car?
13:31I drove the car several times during development.
13:38It's an absolute blast.
13:51It looks like the new Porsche 911 will be in a league of icons.
13:55Fresher on the outside and on the inside, way more digital.
13:59The performance?
14:00Well, the new T-Hybrid, it is innovative, powerful and a real game-changer in typical Porsche fashion.
14:07Now, if you want to know more information, you can head on over to the Porsche newsroom
14:12or you can configure your very own Coupe, Cabriolet or Targa.
14:15Thank you for watching.
14:17That is all. Goodbye from Stuttgart.
14:20Bye.
14:44Hey, listen, mate. I mean, I think it's only fair I get to go in the new car.
14:49Come on, please.
14:51All right.
14:54Okay, I'm not going to make it easy for him.
14:56Let's just move the seat into a really awkward position because I know he's quite torn.
15:05There you go. Good luck. Good luck.
15:06Thank you. Thank you.
15:08He's even shut the door on me.
15:11Oh, what a gentleman.
15:16Thank you.
15:18Thank you.
15:19Come on, start the race. Start the race.
15:21Come on, quick. Come on, start the race.
15:23My legs cannot get in here.
15:24Start it.
15:25What a combo.
15:26Three, two, one.
15:35Oh, no. Oh, my God.
15:48I think I've just been found out.
15:51You just took off.
15:53I had no chance.
15:55This is quick.
15:56This is quick, but that is wow.
16:01This is hooked up and departed.
