Transcript
00:00The DOST continues to advocate for the issue of malnutrition in the country.
00:04This includes the PINGGANG PINOY, which is related to the nutrition that a Filipino should get.
00:09Rod Lagusan in the report.
00:14The issue of malnutrition in the country is still being challenged.
00:18And in the ongoing advocacy here,
00:19one of the programs of the Food Nutrition and Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology
00:24is the PINGGANG PINOY, which is related to the nutrition that a Filipino should get.
00:29This includes the right amount or proportion of food
00:32where GO, GROW, and GLOW foods are included for the proper nutrition to be eaten.
00:36Some of the parents that we talked to,
00:38their own discards to be more substantial,
00:41the food that is included in their budget.
00:43For my budget, I mix,
00:46if there's leftover meat,
00:49or leftover food,
00:51I mix it with vegetables.
00:54Vegetables are healthier, right?
00:57It's better if you push the kids to eat more vegetables than meat.
01:02For example, for lunch,
01:04it's balanced, sir.
01:05For lunch, there's eggs,
01:07hotdogs,
01:09and for lunch,
01:11it can be meat, sir.
01:12And for dinner,
01:15there's a style, sir.
01:16For example, egg tortas mixed with carrots,
01:19that's it, sir.
01:20So that the kids can eat more vegetables.
01:23In the FNRI,
01:24it's possible, Ania,
01:25that the food is cheap but substantial.
01:28It's not necessarily that each Filipino family needs to eat expensive food.
01:34What's needed is that the proportion of food is right.
01:38There are a lot of sources of nutritious food,
01:40not just in supermarkets.
01:42If a family can plant
01:45that can be sustainable and be a source of Filipino food,
01:49that would be better.
01:50For example, Ania,
01:51if the food is instant noodles,
01:53it's better to mix it with eggs,
01:54which is a good source of protein.
01:56Or if you add vegetables,
01:57like petchay,
01:58especially if it's already processed.
02:00And if it's canned goods,
02:02it's also better to add vegetables.
02:04Based on the data of the 2021 Expanded National Nutrition Survey,
02:08for people aged 5 years and below,
02:09underweight is at 16.8%,
02:12stunting or weight gain is at 26.7%,
02:16and overweight is at 3.9%.
02:18It's because this problem is not just related to food,
02:23but there are a lot of factors affecting the rates of these problems.
02:30Based on our data,
02:31we have a distribution by age.
02:36So there are problems where as people age,
02:41the number of people with these problems also increases.
02:50Also included in this is the socioeconomic condition,
02:53because poverty is affected,
02:55even the consumption of drugs,
02:56drinking and eating salty foods.
02:59Currently, the 2023-2024 National Nutrition Survey
03:04was launched in December.
03:06Based on the data gathered from the National Nutrition Survey,
03:09our other departments,
03:11like the National Food and Nutrition Research and Division,
03:17they conduct studies based on the NNS results
03:21on how to improve the nutrition of the Filipinos.
03:25Currently, the agency is working with INU-TRIBA,
03:28which is being used by DSWD and DEPED
03:31for their feeding program.
03:32While there is also,
03:33when it comes to micronutrient deficiency,
03:35iron-fortified rice and tap water
03:38for the issue of iodine deficiency.
