00:00The U.S. National Hurricane Center said in its 5 p.m. report that Hurricane Beryl's
00:17eyewall was brushing the south coast of Jamaica on Wednesday, unleashing 140 mph winds along
00:24a path of expected destruction before heading west at a brisk pace towards the Cayman Islands.
00:30The Center Beryl is forecast to pass near or over Jamaica's southern coast as a major
00:37hurricane over the next few hours before unloading devastating hurricane-force winds, life-threatening
00:44storm surges and damaging waves across the Cayman Islands.
00:49The storm is projected to drench Jamaica with 4 to 8 inches of rain, and 12 inches
00:55are forecast in some places, which could cause life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.
01:02Forecasters say Beryl will remain a hurricane later this week when it's projected to pass
01:06over the Yucatan Peninsula late Thursday or early Friday and emerge over the Gulf of Mexico.
01:17In this context, the Government of Jamaica decreed a curfew to prevent the loss of human
01:21and material lives during the passage of Hurricane Beryl, which made landfall on Wednesday and
01:28wreaked havoc on the Eastern Caribbean.
01:31The measure, announced by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, went into effect from Wednesday at
01:366 a.m. local time until 6 p.m. local time.
01:40Holness specified that the curfew sought to reduce the unnecessary movement of people
01:45on the island, considered a disaster zone for the next seven days.
01:50He also ordered the mandatory evacuation of residents of low-lying areas prone to flooding.
01:56The Prime Minister noted that such a decision will enable a proactive stance to be taken
02:02to prepare and protect the island against any threats posed by the hurricane, and to
02:07create the conditions to respond to them.
