00:00 Hurricane Lee has been rapidly intensifying and has been moving west across the open waters
00:07 of the Atlantic.
00:09 As of Thursday, Hurricane Lee was about 705 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands,
00:15 which are in the northeastern Caribbean.
00:18 According to reports, the storm was moving west-northwest at 14 miles per hour.
00:24 Reports further revealed that its maximum sustained winds of 160 miles per hour make
00:28 it a Category 5 storm, the first of this Atlantic hurricane season.
00:33 According to weather forecasters, Lee currently does not threaten any land and there are no
00:38 coastal watches or warnings in effect.
00:41 However, according to the Hurricane Center, dangerous surf conditions generated by the
00:45 storm are likely to affect the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, the Bahamas and Bermuda
00:52 over the weekend.
00:53 Meteorologists are fairly confident that Lee will stay north of the Caribbean.
00:58 Several forecast models suggest that the storm will deviate north, but it remains unclear
01:03 if and when that will happen and whether it turns before threatening the United States.
01:08 In a published forecast discussion, the Hurricane Center said that it is way too soon to know
01:12 what level of impacts, if any, Lee might have along the US east coast, Atlantic, Canada
01:18 or Bermuda late next week, particularly since the hurricane is expected to slow down considerably
01:23 over the southwestern Atlantic.
01:26 The Hurricane Center has given an estimate of how big the storm is going to get.
01:31 According to them, Lee intensified rapidly on Thursday, with its wind speeds doubling
01:35 from 80 mph to 160 mph.
01:38 It is expected to remain a major hurricane that is Category 3 or higher, with wind speeds
01:44 of at least 111 mph through next week.
01:48 There are some chances that it will hit the US east coast.
01:52 However, reports strongly suggest that it is currently not the likely outcome.
01:56 Lee might also hit Canada or stay farther east and move across Bermuda.
02:01 By this weekend, forecasters should be getting a better idea of the forecast path for Lee.
