00:29By Jonathan Lunden
00:30Illustrated by Frank Remkowitz
00:32It was the first day of school.
00:38Froggy woke up and looked out the window.
00:41The sun was high in the sky.
00:43Oh no!
00:44The bus!
00:45The bus!
00:46He cried.
00:47I'll miss the bus!
00:52He hopped out of bed and flopped outside.
00:56Flop-flop-flop.
00:57The school bus was leaving.
01:03Wait!
01:04Wait!
01:05He yelled and took a mighty hop.
01:11The bus hissed to a stop and the door folded open.
01:15Froggy flopped up the steps.
01:17Flop-flop-flop.
01:19But when he reached the top, everybody laughed and pointed their fingers.
01:25Froggy!
01:28yelled his friend Max.
01:31What?
01:32Did you forget something?
01:34Froggy looked down.
01:36Oops!
01:37He was in his underwear.
01:43He dashed to the back of the bus and hid behind Max's umbrella all the way to school.
01:49At school, he hopped behind bushes.
01:57He tried to hide behind the flagpole.
02:00He rolled down the hall like a bowling ball.
02:03And in class, he pretended to be a flowerpot.
02:09Froggy! called his teacher.
02:12What?
02:13But it wasn't his teacher at all.
02:16It was his father.
02:21Froggy rubbed his eyes.
02:23He had been dreaming.
02:25He was still in bed.
02:27Rise and shine, Froggy, said his father.
02:30It's the first day of school.
02:36This time, Froggy got all dressed.
02:39Zip, zoop, zup, zup, zup, zup, zup.
02:42Then he flopped into the kitchen.
02:44Flop-flop-flop.
02:49He tried to pour milk on his bowl of flies.
02:52But the carton flew out of his hands.
02:55You're just nervous about school, Froggy, said his mother.
02:58Everybody is the first day.
03:02Not me, cried Froggy.
03:08And together they leapfrogged all the way to the bus stop.
03:11Flop-flop-flop.
03:17At school, Froggy found his name tag on his table.
03:21He liked his name.
03:23It was the first word he knew how to read.
03:29It was the only word he knew how to read.
03:32Froggy!
03:34He read it aloud, louder and louder.
03:40Froggy, cried his teacher, Miss Witherspoon.
03:44What?
03:45Hush, dear, it's time to pay attention.
03:52But it was hard to pay attention.
03:54He squirmed.
03:56He looked out the window at the falling leaves.
03:59He felt like a leaf, falling, falling.
04:03He fell out of his chair.
04:05Oops.
04:07Kindly stay in your seat, dear, said Miss Witherspoon.
04:10We'll sit on the floor at circle time.
04:16At circle time, Miss Witherspoon said,
04:19Now, children, today I'd like you to tell us what you did last summer.
04:23Who wants to go first?
04:25Froggy shouted, Me, me, me, me, me.
04:28And so did Max.
04:30Miss Witherspoon went, Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap.
04:33And everybody went, Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap with her.
04:37Then they grew very quiet.
04:39Now, one at a time, said Miss Witherspoon.
04:46When Froggy's turn came, he jumped up and said,
04:50Last summer, I learned how to swim.
04:53And he sang, Bubble, bubble, toot, toot, chicken, airplane, soldier.
04:57Everybody jumped up and joined in.
05:00Bubble, bubble, toot, toot, chicken, airplane, soldier.
05:07When, uh-oh, in walked the principal, Mr. Mugwort.
05:12Bubble, bubble, oops, cried Froggy,
05:15looking more red in the face than green.
05:18Mr. Mugwort glared at him.
05:20Then he joined in.
05:22Bubble, bubble, toot, toot, chicken, airplane, soldier.
05:25Till the bell rang for recess.
05:31When Froggy flopped off the bus after school,
05:34his father said, Froggy, how was your first day of school?
05:38Great, said Froggy.
05:40I taught the principal how to swim.
05:43Hmm, that's nice, said his mother.
05:46But where's your lunchbox and baseball cap?
05:49Oops, I left them at school.
05:52Oh, Froggy, will you ever learn, said his mother.
05:56That's why I'm going to school, Mom.
05:59And together they leapfrogged.
06:03All the way home, flop, flop, flop.
06:12I hope you enjoyed that story.
