00:00Our Assistant Leader, Joe Neguse.

00:04Thank you, Congresswoman Sewell.

00:06It is impossible to follow Mr. Clyburn, but I will certainly try.

00:10But one of the privileges that we have in the United States Congress is serving with

00:15living legends, with true giants, not all members, mind you, but some true giants.

00:22And Mr. Clyburn is one of those giants, a living legend, an icon, a hero who spoke eloquently,

00:28as you just heard, about his parents' journey and struggle against segregation, who spoke

00:34eloquently about his friend and our dear colleague, the late John Lewis, and his struggle in the

00:40civil rights movement.

00:41But what you did not hear Mr. Clyburn talk about or discuss was his own work as a young

00:48man growing up in the segregated South, in a small town in South Carolina, protesting

00:52and marching for civil rights, jailed as a young man where he met his future wife.

01:02And the work that he did to ultimately ensure that folks like myself, Representative Sewell,

01:09Chairman Aguilar, so many others would even have the opportunity to serve in this distinguished

01:14body.

01:15So we're grateful to Mr. Clyburn for his legacy of service to our country and for continuing

01:22the clarion call to make the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act a reality.

01:26We're also deeply grateful to Congresswoman Sewell, who has been a fierce champion for

01:31getting this done since the first day that she arrived here on Capitol Hill.

01:38It has been a long journey and there is more road for us to traverse, but I am confident

01:45with Representative Sewell's leadership and the incredible leaders here at the podium

01:50and in our House Democratic Caucus that we will ultimately get this bill one day signed

01:56into law.

01:58We talked about heroes.

01:59Of course, one of those heroes is Mr. Lewis.

02:04And one of my favorite quotes, of course, there's many quotes of his that I know sustain

02:08many of us, but one of my favorite quotes is when he once said that the vote is the

02:13most powerful, non-violent tool that we have.

02:18And I'm reminded of that this week as we mark the 11-year anniversary of the disastrous

02:27Shelby decision and the work that must be done to protect that sacrosanct tool for every

02:35single American.

02:37The key to doing that is passing this bill that Representative Sewell has implored the

02:43Congress to take up.

02:45And we will continue to support her in her efforts every step of the way.
