00:00Former President Donald Trump has chosen Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his 2024 running mate.
00:06Trump announced his VP pick on Truth Social on Monday, and now intense focus is on the
00:11staunch Trump ally and one-time critic.
00:14Vance, a 39-year-old veteran of the Iraq War, Yale-educated lawyer, and former venture capitalist,
00:22was elected to the Senate in 2022 after Trump endorsed him, which helped him beat GOP primary
00:27challenger Josh Mandel and Democratic nominee Tim Ryan.
00:32Billionaire PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel was a big supporter of Vance during his Senate
00:36run, donating about $15 million — the largest amount ever to boost an individual Senate
00:42candidate, according to Politico — to support Vance.
00:46In March, Vance said that Thiel is, quote, a very fascinating and knowledgeable person
00:50— he likes to bounce ideas off of.
00:54A one-time Thiel employee, Vance rose to prominence in 2016 when he released his memoir, Hillbilly
00:59Elegy.
01:00The book chronicled the social, economic, and cultural effects of manufacturing's decline
01:05in the Ohio town he grew up in.
01:08Vance said he didn't vote for the former president in the 2016 election, and his former
01:12roommate said Vance had texted him saying Trump was, quote, cynical and could be, quote,
01:17America's Hitler.
01:19This according to the Associated Press.
01:21In October 2016, Vance tweeted Trump was, quote, reprehensible, saying the then-presidential
01:27candidate, quote, makes people I care about afraid, and criticizing him for his anti-immigrant
01:32and anti-Muslim policies and rhetoric.
01:35Though Vance hasn't always supported Trump, he has grown to be a defender of and campaigner
01:39for the former president and his ideas, including his views on trade policy and limiting foreign
01:45aid.
01:46And he has developed a close relationship with Donald Trump Jr., who is expected to
01:49formally introduce Trump's running mate Monday.
