Lucy Beattie General Election 2024 Interview 3

00:00Just picking up where we left off there and the impact of Brexit and the cost of
00:04living, how would you go about that because at the moment I think the
00:10consensus is that there's going to be a Labour victory, it's going to be a big
00:14Labour victory and supposing Scotland voted 100% for the SNP and returned SNP
00:23candidates in every single seat to Westminster, that you would still never
00:28be able to overturn a Labour majority. So what's your approach going to be if you are elected to Westminster?
00:35Well I guess when I first really got interested in the idea that Scottish
00:41politics could be something that I could determine was 1997 and I was 21 and you
00:48had the victory, Tony Blair's government, Donald Deere is a political hero of mine
00:52and their administration brought about Good Friday agreement which was
00:57fantastic for peace in Northern Ireland and I mean that's still a process that's
01:01moving forward, a lot of reparation to be done in that process but also for
01:06Scotland we got devolution and that was something that couldn't have happened if it hadn't been for the Labour government, so I think there is probably stronger support for the Labour
01:15government south of the border and it might be getting stronger this side of
01:19the border, certainly not in the Highlands though and I haven't actually
01:22yet met, I think I've met probably two or three supporters for Labour on the doorsteps but they've actually said that strategically they want to vote for the SNP because they feel it's about the representation of this area and what they need.
01:37It's a local connection fundamentally. Yeah and it might suggest that Labour hasn't really made an effective move into our area, so I just hope to work with that government if they were in power.
