00:00:02Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please!
00:00:05Alright, just listen up.
00:00:07The Guinness World Records award for the deepest human invasion into the Earth's crust goes
00:00:12to the Kola Superdeep Borehole.
00:00:16Its depth is 7.4 miles.
00:00:18You can find it in the icy part of Russia where the winter temperature of minus 40 degrees
00:00:23Fahrenheit is a common thing.
00:00:25That's chilling!
00:00:27Well, scientists started to dig it in the 1970s.
00:00:31The grand plan was to reach a depth of 9.3 miles.
00:00:35It was a purely scientific project to study the Earth's crust and maybe get to the hot
00:00:40mantle.
00:00:41Well, when it's so cold outside, it kinda makes sense.
00:00:45Up to the depth of 4.3 miles, the drill easily coped with granite rock.
00:00:50Then, denser layers came and broke the drill.
00:00:54The scientists had to change the drilling pattern.
00:00:56In the end, it resembled a tree with many branches.
00:01:00The deeper it went, the hotter it became.
00:01:03The temperature went up to 350 degrees.
00:01:06The equipment was constantly out of order, and work was stopped completely in 1992.
00:01:12If you see this legendary place with your own eyes, you'd hardly realize there's
00:01:16an abyss right beneath your feet.
00:01:19The borehole looks like a rather small and unambitious hole in the ground.
00:01:23The place is now abandoned, overgrown with moss and rust.
00:01:28It has its fair share of myths surrounding it too.
00:01:31One of them says people hear strange sounds like moans and screams from the depth.
00:01:36In reality, of course, none of this is true.
00:01:39At the time, many countries were engaged in the study of the Earth's crust.
00:01:44For example, Germany.
00:01:46They duly noted the experience of the Kola borehole and made a super-tech drill that
00:01:50could withstand extreme temperatures.
00:01:53A location was chosen in Bavaria at the junction of two tectonic plates.
00:01:58In the past, they were the shores of an ancient ocean.
00:02:02In the early 90s, a group of researchers began drilling a well there.
00:02:06But already at a depth of 4 miles, the Earth fought back.
00:02:10It deflected the drill from the vertical, and then the temperature made a surprise spike
00:02:15to 520 degrees.
00:02:18All these problems forced scientists to stop at a depth of 5.6 miles.
00:02:23In 1977, a company in Austria started drilling a well at a site with plentiful resources.
00:02:30Or so they thought.
00:02:32They did find large gas reserves, but there was an unexpected problem.
00:02:37As the drill entered the chamber, the well collapsed.
00:02:40They tried again and made a new, even bigger borehole that went as deep as 5.3 miles.
00:02:46But ironically, they weren't able to drill into the gas chamber again.
00:02:51In Sweden, expectations from drilling weren't met either.
00:02:55At the site of a huge crater, 30 miles in diameter, they started the search for gas
00:03:00and oil.
00:03:01It's the largest crater in Europe, which must've appeared because of a meteorite.
00:03:06The well went deep, but, unfortunately, nothing of interest was found.
00:03:11At 4 miles down, the drilling stopped.
00:03:15One of the deepest oil wells in the world is Bertha Rogers in Oklahoma.
00:03:20Its depth is almost 6 miles.
00:03:22In 1974, the Lone Star Company achieved such a stunning result in just over 500 days.
00:03:29For 5 years, it was the deepest borehole in the world, until the Kola Superdeep was drilled.
00:03:35Bertha Rogers could probably have gone even deeper, but the drill suddenly struck a molten
00:03:40sulfur deposit.
00:03:42It grew solid around the drill string, breaking the rig.
00:03:46If you can't get to the Earth's mantle from the ground, do it from the water.
00:03:51Project Mohole was just about that.
00:03:53It got its name from moho, the threshold between crust and mantle, and, well, a hole.
00:04:00You know, moho.
00:04:01Well, anyway, the project was launched in the 1960s and was overseen by the U.S. National
00:04:07Science Foundation.
00:04:08The crust on the ocean floor is thinner than on land, and the mantle is closer.
00:04:14Scientists had hoped that a 3-mile-deep underwater borehole would bring them there.
00:04:19They chose a location in the Pacific Ocean, where the bottom was at a depth of about 2
00:04:24miles.
00:04:25There were two phases planned for the project, and the first was a success.
00:04:29A total of 5 wells were drilled, each not exceeding 600 feet in depth.
00:04:34Unfortunately, the second phase never happened.
00:04:37Too many problems were involved.
00:04:39So apparently, there ain't no moho, um, holes.
00:04:44Today, underwater wells are commonplace.
00:04:47Their main purpose is extraction of oil and gas.
00:04:51The EVA-4000 American Drilling Platform is located in the Gulf of Mexico.
00:04:56This huge structure rises above the water, at a height of a 20-story building.
00:05:02The platform moves around looking for oil at depths of over 6,000 feet.
00:05:07And when it finds a good spot, it's capable of drilling up to 6 miles into the seabed.
00:05:13Now let's move to Africa.
00:05:15Here at the very south of the continent, there's a huge quarry, the Kimberley Diamond Mine.
00:05:21Now it's easy to drill through the ground when you have the best equipment.
00:05:25But this hole was literally dug by hand.
00:05:28Over 50,000 workers dug it tirelessly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries using
00:05:34ordinary shovels.
00:05:35And no, they hardly wanted to get to the opposite side of the Earth.
00:05:40They were attracted by the enchanting brilliance of diamonds.
00:05:43One of the most famous precious stones, Tiffany, weighing 128.5 carats, was found in the Kimberley
00:05:51Mine.
00:05:52The depth of the hole reached 790 feet.
00:05:56Just imagine how difficult it was to return from work.
00:05:59It was like climbing 66 floors on foot.
00:06:03When the work stopped, the bottom of the pit was partially filled with soil, and then water
00:06:07flooded the place.
00:06:09Today it's a popular sight among tourists.
00:06:12And surely, each of them secretly hopes to find a diamond there.
00:06:16With the industrial boom, oil became even more popular than diamonds.
00:06:21And the oil wells around the world are getting deeper.
00:06:24For example, in 2008, Qatar drilled the longest oil well at that time, El Shaheed.
00:06:31It was 7.6 miles long, and it only took them a little over a month.
00:06:36The vertical part of the shaft reaches 6.7 miles.
00:06:40Stretched up instead of down, the shaft would reach the height of commercial airplane flights.
00:06:46The record was broken in 2012 by the Z-44 Shavo oil well.
00:06:51When they measured its length, the new hole beat the one in Qatar by about 300 feet.
00:06:57Just for a clearer picture, either of these two oil wells would fit almost 15 Burj Khalifas
00:07:03or 40 Eiffel Towers.
00:07:06Moving on to Canada and high up into the sky to look at it from space.
00:07:10See those two huge holes?
00:07:13If you don't know, those are diamond mining sites.
00:07:15You might think that an alien invasion happened while you slept right through.
00:07:20This enormous place is on the island of Lac du Gras, not far from the Arctic Circle.
00:07:25This is a whole city with industrial and administrative buildings, a boiler house, living quarters
00:07:31for workers, and even an airstrip.
00:07:33In 2018, the largest diamond in North America was found here.
00:07:38It weighed 552 carats.
00:07:41Apart from diamonds and oil, the bowels of the Earth have a lot of other useful stuff.
00:07:47One example is copper.
00:07:49Let's go to Utah and see the giant Bingham Canyon mine.
00:07:53Copper has been mined here for over a century.
00:07:55The width of this quarry reaches 2.5 miles, and it goes half a mile down.
00:08:01Just imagine how breathtaking a paragliding flight would be over this powerful structure!
00:08:06But the greatest treasure of the planet is, of course, fresh water.
00:08:10And to get to it, people would dig as deep as they have to.
00:08:14The deepest water well in the world is found in Great Britain.
00:08:18It was dug by hand in the 19th century.
00:08:21People just had to keep on digging because they couldn't get to water, and as a result,
00:08:25they reached almost 1,300 feet!
00:08:28When the water finally gushed from under the ground, the workers barely managed to escape
00:08:33from the well.
00:08:35Many of us spend a huge part of our life under the ground.
00:08:38Yeah, I mean the subway.
00:08:40The deepest underground station in the world is in Kiev, Ukraine.
00:08:45It takes over 5 minutes for the escalator to lower you to the platform.
00:08:49After all, you're traveling nearly 350 feet down!
00:08:54Sometimes nature decides to dig something deep on its own.
00:08:58Most likely, the Mariana Trench is the deepest point in the ocean.
00:09:02Its bottom, called the Challenger Deep, is 6.8 miles below sea level.
00:09:08Sunlight never gets there.
00:09:10The pressure down below is more than a thousand times higher than on the surface.
00:09:14If you decide to dive to the bottom, you'll spend 4 hours of your time and a whole lot
00:09:20of money on the necessary equipment.
00:09:23Scientists have even found mountains there.
00:09:25By the way, if Everest was moved to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, we wouldn't be able
00:09:30to see its top on the surface.
00:09:32A little riddle – can you dig water?
00:09:35The answer is yes, if it's in the form of ice.
00:09:38The Uran Observatory in Antarctica made it by digging boreholes up to 1.5 miles deep
00:09:44using hot water.
00:09:47Optical detector filaments pass through them.
00:09:49They capture elementary particles – neurons.
00:09:52In fact, this is a telescope that's directed not upwards but downwards into the ice.
00:09:58But that's a completely different story.
00:10:02Back in May 2015, David Hull took his metal detector and went looking for gold.
00:10:08He picked the perfect spot for it.
00:10:10Mayborough near Melbourne, Australia, was the top location down under during the gold
00:10:14rush in the 19th century.
00:10:17The detector beeped, showing there was something precious hiding in the ground.
00:10:21David found a very heavy reddish rock with a weird, dimpled surface resting in some yellow
00:10:27clay.
00:10:28As it turned out later, the find was, indeed, priceless.
00:10:32But only for science.
00:10:34David took the rock home, hoping he'd be able to open it and find a gold nugget inside.
00:10:40He tried a rock saw, an angle grinder, and a drill, and put the rock in acid.
00:10:45Nothing worked.
00:10:46Not even a sledgehammer did the job.
00:10:48A couple of years later, he decided to take the rock to Melbourne Museum and finally find
00:10:53out what it really was.
00:10:55It turned out it was a meteorite, and a rare one.
00:10:59The geologist working at the museum was over the moon, as after years of looking at thousands
00:11:04of rocks that people had thought to be meteorites, he finally got his hands on the real thing.
00:11:10The space origin of the rock explained why it was so unusually heavy.
00:11:17It contained dense forms of iron and nickel, and those guys weigh a lot.
00:11:22And it got its dimpled surface because it started melting when it plunged through Earth's
00:11:28atmosphere.
00:11:29Scientists named the meteorite Marabro, after the place where it was found, and used a diamond
00:11:34saw to study it better.
00:11:36They sliced off a sliver of the space rock, and saw some tiny crystallized droplets of
00:11:41metallic minerals throughout it.
00:11:44Those minerals formed during the early years of our solar system.
00:11:47It means the space guest was around 4.6 billion years old!
00:11:56The researchers are still not quite sure where the meteorite came from, or how long it's
00:12:01been on Earth, but they've got some guesses.
00:12:03Our solar system used to be a swirling mix of dust and chondrite rocks.
00:12:09Gravity did its thing and formed planets, but there were some leftovers, and most of
00:12:13them ended up in a massive asteroid belt.
00:12:16The Marabro meteorite likely took a detour from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
00:12:22It got bumped out of there by asteroids crashing into each other, and one fine day, it decided
00:12:27to crash into Earth.
00:12:30Carbon dating says that this space rock has been chilling on Earth for somewhere between
00:12:34100 and 1,000 years.
00:12:37There were meteorite sightings in the 19th century that could match up with when it made
00:12:41its grand entrance.
00:12:43The scientists say the Marabro meteorite is even rarer than gold.
00:12:48It's only the 17th meteorite ever found in the Australian state of Victoria, and the
00:12:53second largest.
00:12:58In the 80s, David Mazurek from Michigan decided to buy a farm not far from Mount Pleasant.
00:13:04The new property came with a weird bonus, a large rock that kept the barn door open.
00:13:09The farmer explained the rock was a meteorite.
00:13:12It had literally fallen from the sky in the 30s.
00:13:15The farmer and his father found the crater the meteorite had left and dug out their guest
00:13:19from space, which was still warm.
00:13:22They couldn't think of a better use for it than to serve as a doorstop.
00:13:26I mean, what else can you do with a meteorite?
00:13:29The new owner got to keep the unconventional doorstop and must have grown fond of it.
00:13:34When he was moving to a new home, he took the rock with him and used it for the same
00:13:38purpose for another 30 years.
00:13:41Sometimes David will let his kids take it to school.
00:13:44It must have gotten some easy A's in physics and astronomy.
00:13:51Then he heard that other Michigan residents find and sell pieces of meteorites for some
00:13:56serious cash.
00:13:57Since his piece was an impressive 22 pounds, he decided to take it to Central Michigan
00:14:02University to find out its value.
00:14:05A local geology professor was getting tired of similar requests because, for around 18
00:14:12years, she had to explain to people all the rocks they had brought her weren't meteorites
00:14:17at all.
00:14:18But this time, she felt it was the real thing.
00:14:21She tested the rock and determined it was a meteorite made from iron and nickel.
00:14:26It turned out to be the sixth-largest recorded find of this kind in Michigan and the most
00:14:31valuable specimen she's ever worked with.
00:14:34They sent a slice for another round of verification to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington
00:14:39D.C., and soon it was all official.
00:14:43It turned out that the meteorite was a piece of an early solar system.
00:14:47The Smithsonian and a museum in Maine offered some good money for the space rock.
00:14:52Mazurek decided to sell his meteorite to Michigan State University's Abrams Planetarium for
00:14:57$75,000.
00:15:00He generously shared 10% of the money with Central Michigan University's Earth and Atmospheric
00:15:05Sciences Department, where they confirmed the rock's true identity.
00:15:09I hope the money he was left with was enough to buy a new doorstop!
00:15:17While some use meteorites as furniture, scientists have found a way to utilize them to extract
00:15:22oxygen from water on Mars.
00:15:25Traveling to the red planet is impossible without oxygen.
00:15:29We need it both to breathe and fuel rockets for a return trip to Earth.
00:15:33The new robot, called AI Chemist, hunts down a compound that can kick-start a chemical
00:15:39reaction on Mars to produce oxygen.
00:15:42The compound is crafted from elements found in Martian meteorites.
00:15:47This planet only has traces of oxygen in its atmosphere.
00:15:50But scientists have found there's some liquid water underneath the southern ice cap of Mars
00:15:56and more water under its surface.
00:15:59So they needed to figure out how to break down this water into its hydrogen and oxygen
00:16:04molecules using materials available on the red planet.
00:16:08The AI chemist analyzed five meteorites that either came from Mars or were similar to that
00:16:14of its surface.
00:16:19It used a laser to locate large amounts of iron, nickel, calcium, magnesium, aluminum,
00:16:25and manganese in the samples.
00:16:28These elements will be enough to produce more than 3.7 million possible molecules to break
00:16:33down water and generate oxygen on the red planet.
00:16:37Finding the right algorithm for this process would take us humans around 2,000 years, and
00:16:43the robot managed to do it in a matter of weeks.
00:16:46Using the meteorite compound as a catalyst, the robot managed to do its job in negative
00:16:5135 degrees Fahrenheit on Earth, and it did so without any human help at all.
00:16:58Now the question is if it will be able to do the same on Mars, where the atmospheric
00:17:03composition, air density, humidity, gravity, and other conditions are trickier than on
00:17:09Earth.
00:17:11Other scientists previously managed to produce small amounts of oxygen fit for breathing
00:17:15up there.
00:17:16An instrument the size of a lunchbox on NASA's Perseverance rover compressed and heated carbon
00:17:22dioxide from Mars' atmosphere.
00:17:24It generated oxygen at around the same speed as a small tree.
00:17:29I think Matt Damon's character from The Martian would have loved all these advances in space
00:17:33science.
00:17:38Millions of meteorites crash into our planet every year.
00:17:4195% of them are thought to come from just two sources, 75% from the crust of a big asteroid
00:17:48and 20% from the mantle of an even larger celestial body that bit the dust ages ago.
00:17:54But in May 2020, researchers stumbled upon some meteorite pieces in the Sahara Desert
00:18:00that were like nothing they'd seen before.
00:18:03They were labeled as ungrouped achondrites, a type of rock that formed from melted minor
00:18:08planets way back in the solar system's early days.
00:18:12This makes the find slightly older than Earth itself.
00:18:15But unlike others of its kind, this meteorite was made out of andesite, which made it even
00:18:21more unique.
00:18:22It could serve as proof that the early protoplanets in the solar system and a ton of other debris
00:18:27either got wrecked or joined forces in building the rocky planets we know today.
00:18:36The voyage started just like any other.
00:18:38The cargo ship SS Cotopaxi is making another journey to Havana, Cuba, to deliver coal.
00:18:45It's November 29, 1925.
00:18:48For Captain Meyer and his crew, leaving Charleston Port, South Carolina, it will be the last
00:18:54trip the ship ever makes.
00:18:56Its route ran through the Bermuda Triangle.
00:18:59Two days into the trip, the Cotopaxi sent out a distress signal.
00:19:03It had got caught up in a strong tropical storm and turned over on its side.
00:19:09The wind was very strong, and there was powerful lightning as well.
00:19:13Rain gradually filled the ship's hold.
00:19:16Then there was a bright white flash, and the ship disappeared without a trace.
00:19:21Later its wreckage was found in the Gobi Desert, which is in a completely different part of
00:19:26the world.
00:19:28All 32 crew members, including the captain, were missing.
00:19:32Of course, the part about the Gobi Desert is fictional.
00:19:36For one of his movies, Steven Spielberg came up with the idea that the ship was moved there
00:19:40by aliens.
00:19:42Still, in real life, the ship was never found, and its crew really did disappear.
00:19:48It was officially declared missing a month afterward, and nobody could find the wreck.
00:19:55It seems like a classic case of mysterious things going on in the Bermuda Triangle.
00:20:01But most mysteries are solved sooner or later.
00:20:04In 2020, the Cotopaxi was found.
00:20:07A man named Michael Barnett had moved to Florida to study shipwrecks off the coast.
00:20:13One wreck in particular really caught his attention.
00:20:16It was much larger than the others, and the locals called it the Bear Wreck.
00:20:21He was about 40 miles from St. Augustine in northern Florida, but no one had ever managed
00:20:26to identify the rusty hull.
00:20:29So Michael started to do some detective work.
00:20:32He measured the size of the shipwreck and started working through all the information
00:20:36he could find.
00:20:38He researched hundreds of old newspapers, leafed through insurance records, and looked
00:20:42at artifacts found on the wreck.
00:20:45After hundreds of hours of hard work, Michael was sure it was the Cotopaxi.
00:20:51But a few years before, there had been a rumor that the same ship had been found off
00:20:55the coast of Cuba.
00:20:57The Coast Guard found the wreck of a cargo ship about the same size that looked a lot
00:21:01like the one lost in 1925.
00:21:04Michael was sure they were wrong, so he teamed up with some science journalists and kept
00:21:09investigating.
00:21:11Soon they discovered something that seemed to confirm Michael's belief.
00:21:15Researchers found brass valves with the letters SV on them in the wreckage of the ship.
00:21:21Michael suggested these initials referred to Scott Valve Manufacturing Company.
00:21:26The headquarters of this company was in Michigan, not far from where the Cotopaxi had been built.
00:21:32The company had probably supplied parts for the Cotopaxi.
00:21:36So the puzzle seemed to be solved.
00:21:38The Bear Wreck was really the missing cargo ship.
00:21:42But Michael still needed to work out why the ship had sunk.
00:21:45Did something mysterious really happen to the Cotopaxi in the Bermuda Triangle?
00:21:50Later, Michael found the testimony of the ship's carpenter among some old papers.
00:21:56The carpenter claimed that the hatches covering the coal on the ship had been in a terrible
00:22:01condition before it sank.
00:22:03Repair work on the covers wasn't finished before the crew got the order to sail to Cuba.
00:22:09So if the hatch covers were still broken during the trip, water could've easily gotten
00:22:13on board.
00:22:15This water probably flooded the hull during the tropical storm.
00:22:19This was the real reason why the Cotopaxi went down.
00:22:23There was really nothing mysterious about it.
00:22:25It was just a mistake made by ordinary people.
00:22:30But this is just one example out of dozens, or even hundreds, where ships and planes have
00:22:35gone missing in the Bermuda Triangle.
00:22:38We still can't explain some of these incidents.
00:22:40It seems like there really is something weird going on there.
00:22:45One of these strange events happened in 1948.
00:22:49A passenger jet was headed for Miami from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
00:22:54It disappeared in the same area as the Cotopaxi.
00:22:57The 32 people on board vanished without a trace.
00:23:01The weather was clear throughout the flight.
00:23:04But experts think that when the plane was about 50 miles from the coast, it could've
00:23:09been hit by a strong wind that knocked it off course.
00:23:13Years later, a similar plane was found in the area of the Bermuda Triangle.
00:23:17But because no one could work out the registration, it was impossible to say for sure if it was
00:23:23the same one.
00:23:25Something even stranger occurred not long before, in 1945.
00:23:30Five planes went missing all at the same time.
00:23:33Some trainee pilots were practicing their navigation skills.
00:23:37But when they'd finished, it seems they couldn't find their way back home and disappeared.
00:23:43Many people assume they just ran out of fuel.
00:23:45This seems likely, but still, the circumstances were really strange.
00:23:50The trainees were being supervised by an experienced pilot who had 2,500 hours of flight time.
00:23:57He would never have let a group of newbie pilots get that far away from their base.
00:24:02Even now, people still debate what could've happened.
00:24:05Some insist the pilots ran into something supernatural out there in the Bermuda Triangle.
00:24:11But who knows?
00:24:14And here's another freaky thing that happened there which no expert has been able to explain
00:24:18– time travel.
00:24:21In 1970, Bruce Gurnon was flying a plane from Andros Island to the Florida coast.
00:24:27When he was at 11,500 feet, a giant cloud appeared in front of him.
00:24:32It kept getting bigger and bigger, and he had no choice but to fly through it.
00:24:37As soon as he did, the plane was surrounded by darkness.
00:24:41It was as if the day had turned to night in a split second.
00:24:45Suddenly, Bruce began to see white flashes of light around him.
00:24:49They were so bright that they lit up the entire sky.
00:24:52But they weren't lightning bolts, although he couldn't really explain what they were.
00:24:57The plane continued through the strange cloud for almost a half an hour.
00:25:02Bruce noticed that the cloud changed shape during this time.
00:25:05The space around the plane turned into a tunnel.
00:25:08Then the tunnel started narrowing.
00:25:10Bruce became really tense as he tried to cope with the plane's controls.
00:25:15All his instruments and navigation equipment were going crazy, and the electronics stopped
00:25:20working.
00:25:21Then a white light appeared at the end of the tunnel.
00:25:24Just like in the movies, the plane escaped the closing cloud tunnel at the very last
00:25:29second.
00:25:30Everything was fine, but now Bruce found himself in some white fog.
00:25:34He had no idea where he was.
00:25:37Then he managed to contact ground control.
00:25:40He was shocked when he learned that his plane was already in the airspace above Miami.
00:25:46It seemed that something impossible had happened.
00:25:49Bruce was meant to cover a distance of about 250 miles during the flight.
00:25:53This usually took one and a half hours.
00:25:56But he had managed it in just 47 minutes.
00:25:59Almost two times faster than normal.
00:26:02When Bruce landed, he went to check the amount of fuel left in the tank.
00:26:06It turned out he'd used up a lot less than the normal amount of fuel as well.
00:26:11Could there be a logical explanation for the time-traveling plane?
00:26:16Well, records show that a large number of sunspots were detected on the surface of the
00:26:20sun that day.
00:26:22And there was a strong solar wind.
00:26:24This could easily have made the electronics and devices on the plane go crazy.
00:26:28But what about the mysterious cloud?
00:26:31The Florida coast is a place where two large air currents meet.
00:26:35One has a high pressure, and the other is a low pressure one.
00:26:39This causes a lot of storm clouds in the area.
00:26:42But people still debate how Bruce was able to cover the distance so quickly.
00:26:47Some people say that some kind of mysterious dark energy was involved.
00:26:52Others say it was a gravitational anomaly that curved space and time.
00:26:57Others think that Bruce is just a fraud.
00:27:00We still don't know the truth.
00:27:03So is there really something supernatural about the Bermuda Triangle?
00:27:08Or is it all just coincidences and made-up stories?
00:27:12The truth is that no more planes and ships disappear in the Bermuda Triangle than anywhere
00:27:17else in the world.
00:27:20Life is full of weird things, so how about we check a few of them out?
00:27:26Imagine you decided to go out for an afternoon walk.
00:27:29But 10 minutes into your walk, you run into some really, really bizarre stuff.
00:27:34Let's see if you can guess which of the items on this list happened in real life,
00:27:39or if they came straight out of an otherworldly science fiction movie.
00:27:44In a dumpster on the street corner where your building is located, you find a big white
00:27:49bag.
00:27:50The type you would have to denounce if you were at an airport.
00:27:54It's suspicious, and oh no, there's something moving inside of it.
00:27:58You dare to approach it.
00:28:00Carefully, of course.
00:28:01You want to open it, but decide it's better to do it with a long stick.
00:28:05So that's what you decide to do.
00:28:08Only to find out that inside it, there are over 10 live coiled snakes.
00:28:13I mean, who throws away a bag of snakes?
00:28:16Even if this situation is a big security hazard, it happened several years ago in England.
00:28:22That was shocking, but you came out of it with all your fingers, so that's a win!
00:28:28Further down the street, you spot another live animal running around all by itself.
00:28:33It's a chicken this time.
00:28:34You look around to see if you can find its owner, but the chicken seems to be completely
00:28:38on its own.
00:28:39What is this supposed to be?
00:28:41A remake of the Chicken Run movie?
00:28:43Or is this what they call a free-range chicken in city areas?
00:28:48If you guessed this was real, you guessed right!
00:28:50It also happened in England, where a CCTV camera caught footage of this weird event.
00:28:57If you want to multiply that by millions, then check out the island of Oahu in Hawaii,
00:29:02where fabulous flocks of feral chickens roam around the place, free as a bird!
00:29:08Meanwhile, you approach a part of the town that's neighbored by a small forest and
00:29:12decide to explore a bit.
00:29:14You don't come here much, so everything is kind of a surprise.
00:29:18You come to the first figure that makes you a little scared.
00:29:21I mean, is this supposed to be Groot from Guardian of the Galaxy?
00:29:25Nature looks like the keeper of the forest, or at least someone put these branches together
00:29:29to look like this.
00:29:31But it's just a natural phenomenon.
00:29:33I guess Mother Nature also likes to engage in some art-making, huh?
00:29:40Moving past the forest guardian, you run into what looks like a small mountain of something.
00:29:45But what could it be?
00:29:46Is it made out of clay?
00:29:48You approach it more and more until the blob starts to reveal itself more clearly.
00:29:52You can't believe what you're seeing!
00:29:55These are hundreds of hills of pasta.
00:29:58That delicious Italian dish that almost everyone in the world loves.
00:30:03How could someone throw this crazy amount of pasta away?
00:30:06Judging by your last encounter, you thought this was nature-made as well.
00:30:11But probably, some restaurant made too much spaghetti and threw it away after it went
00:30:15bad.
00:30:17This fact may be disturbing, but it happened in real life.
00:30:21On the outskirts of New Jersey, someone did run into a hundred little pasta hills.
00:30:25The mystery of how the pasta got there still remains.
00:30:30The pasta incident made your heart break a little, but you continue on your walk.
00:30:34And that's when you find an old abandoned house.
00:30:38It looks like nobody has been here for a very long time.
00:30:41You see the usual stuff an abandoned house has – a ripped-up couch, some pots and pans
00:30:46scattered on the floor, old pieces of cloth hanging around.
00:30:51But the surprise lies on the basement floor.
00:30:53Once you go down, you're completely caught off-guard when you see a huge water tank with
00:30:58something swimming inside of it.
00:31:00Oh my, can that really be a shark?
00:31:03Yup, and her name is Rosie.
00:31:05Recently, an urban explorer went to check out an abandoned wildlife amusement park in
00:31:10Australia and found Rosie in a tank.
00:31:13She hadn't been alive for years, but how bizarre is that?
00:31:18Back in a bustling part of town, you stop in front of an electronics shop.
00:31:22The TVs on display are showing some of the world's most bizarre and unique natural
00:31:27phenomena.
00:31:28Since you've been experiencing a lot of bizarreness for the past hours, you stay and
00:31:32watch.
00:31:33Have you ever seen a rose lake before?
00:31:36This hasn't been tainted on purpose, of course.
00:31:38There's one in Senegal, Africa.
00:31:40The so-called Lake Ripa, or Lac Rose as known by locals, has become internationally famous
00:31:46for shining in its vivid pink color.
00:31:49It's one of the world's saltiest lakes, with a saline level of over 40%.
00:31:55And in case you were wondering why the water is pink, I assure you this has nothing to
00:31:59do with other worldly factors.
00:32:02It's actually due to the high levels of salt.
00:32:04There's an algae that lives there that produces red pigments.
00:32:08Even if you thought this could be fiction, nah, it's really real, and you can travel
00:32:12there anytime you want to.
00:32:16After all this exploring, you stop to buy a burger in the street joint.
00:32:20Once you're finished, you walk to the nearest dumpster to throw away your garbage.
00:32:25But oh no, it looks like the trash is moving again!
00:32:28You've already seen a family of snakes this morning, what could you find now?
00:32:33Well, before you can get any closer, a black bear pokes its head out of the trash.
00:32:37You scream, and get as far away from it as you can.
00:32:42That was close!
00:32:43I mean, it's not every day people find wild animals in dumpsters, but this is also a true
00:32:49story.
00:32:50A garbage cleaner had a real-life encounter with a bear and made it out all in one piece.
00:32:55Well, good for him.
00:32:58Moving on, further down the street, you find an old abandoned building.
00:33:03Since it's never a good idea to go inside, that's of course exactly what you do.
00:33:07This place feels like you were teleported to ancient Egypt.
00:33:11The building itself looks like an old Egyptian temple, built in sand-colored stones.
00:33:16The first thing you see is a statue of a pharaoh, but then you notice some pizza ovens.
00:33:22Was this an Egyptian-themed pizza parlor?
00:33:25You find some flyers around that explain everything to you.
00:33:28The enterprise was meant to be called Pizza Tut, but halfway through renovations, the
00:33:33company ran out of money and abandoned the whole thing altogether.
00:33:37The best part?
00:33:39Pizza Tut would've existed in New Jersey if it hadn't gone broke.
00:33:43Too bad it closed down, right?
00:33:46Well next, you grab your phone and figure out you have no idea where you are.
00:33:51You put your address on Google Maps, but before it gives you any results, your Internet goes
00:33:56down.
00:33:57It starts raining like there's no tomorrow.
00:33:59As you seek shelter from the rain, a huge thunderstorm begins.
00:34:03Thankfully, you're safe, but you see something you've never seen before.
00:34:08Like an upside-down bolt of lightning, coming from the ground up to the sky.
00:34:13Is that even scientific?
00:34:14Yes, it is.
00:34:16Lightning can move either downwards or upwards, from sky to earth, or from earth to sky.
00:34:22This can happen when there's a tall object near the spot of the lightning discharge,
00:34:26and the electric field of the flash causes the light to travel from ground to cloud,
00:34:31as scientists call it.
00:34:32I find this shocking.
00:34:34Okay, you were definitely not prepared for all of this.
00:34:38As the storm calms down, you get an Uber home.
00:34:41No more walking for you today.
00:34:43On the ride home, your Uber goes off the path.
00:34:46He says he knows a good shortcut.
00:34:48In a few minutes, you can't believe what your eyes are seeing.
00:34:51You're inside a tunnel, way under street level, and your Uber driver is showing you
00:34:56an old deactivated metro station.
00:34:59Similar to City Hall Station in New York City, built in the early 1900s, it's so
00:35:04beautiful, with brass chandeliers and multicolored tile arches.
00:35:08You take a selfie, of course.
00:35:10Who knows?
00:35:11Your Uber drives you out of the tunnel, and you definitely feel like you just time-traveled.
00:35:16He leaves you on your doorstep, and you give a big sigh.
00:35:20Finally!
00:35:21All again!
00:35:22I bet you've seen and lived through enough bizarre experiences for a lifetime, wouldn't
00:35:26you say so?
00:35:27What were your guesses?
00:35:29I bet you imagined most of these things were made up, huh?
00:35:32They say nothing is ever lost, and it's true.
00:35:36Let's discover ships frozen in time.
00:35:38The first one is truly fascinating.
00:35:41Here the Antikythera shipwreck.
00:35:43It's a Greek trading ship from the 1st century BCE.
00:35:47It's located on the east side of the Greek island of Antikythera, and at the merging
00:35:51point of the Aegean and Mediterranean seas.
00:35:54Around 2,000 years later, in 1900, a group of Greek sponge divers discovered the wreck.
00:36:00They were going to Tunisia, yet they were forced to find shelter from a storm on a nearby
00:36:05island.
00:36:06Since they couldn't go anywhere due to the storm, they decided to look for sponges until
00:36:10the weather got calmer.
00:36:12One of the divers discovered the shipwreck at depths of around 130 feet.
00:36:17Imagine someone going for a sponge hunt, but getting out to the surface with archaeological
00:36:21treasures!
00:36:23The captain of the sponge boat talked to the Greek officials about what they had found.
00:36:28The officials sent two ships to the wreckage.
00:36:30The salvage operation was successful, and discoveries are now in Greece's National
00:36:34Archaeological Museum in Athens.
00:36:37The findings included three life-sized marble horses, jewelry, coins, and hundreds of works
00:36:43of art, including a seven-foot-tall colossus statue of Hercules.
00:36:48Among these treasures, Antikythera of Phoebe, a bronze statue of a young man, caught more
00:36:53attention.
00:36:54Because the Ephebe doesn't comply with any familiar iconographic model, and there are
00:36:58no known copies of his type, he held a spherical object in his hand.
00:37:03Scholars have different theories of who that person could be, but they are not in a consensus
00:37:08yet.
00:37:10More than 70 years later, Jean-Yves Cousteau and his team went to the area and recovered
00:37:14hundreds more artifacts and the remains of four people.
00:37:18Interestingly, they discovered a complex set of interlocking gears capable of predicting
00:37:23the movement of the sun, moon, and several planets.
00:37:27The mechanism can also show the times of solar and lunar eclipses years into the future.
00:37:33Think of this Antikythera mechanism as an early computer calendar, you know, to plan
00:37:37significant events like agricultural activities, religious rituals, and Olympic Games.
00:37:43These artifacts found in the Antikythera wreckage are some of the most important findings in
00:37:47modern archaeology.
00:37:49Just the Antikythera mechanism itself has changed our perception of the limits of ancient
00:37:53technology.
00:37:55The mechanism has a sophisticated design and was made over a thousand years ago.
00:38:00After all these amazing discoveries, experts believe that the wreckage site has remained
00:38:04largely unexplored and is mostly because of its location and the landscape of the seafloor
00:38:08on which the ship rests.
00:38:11The wreck is too deep for scuba divers but too shallow to use something like a submersible.
00:38:16A survey made on the seafloor in 2012 showed evidence of a second wreck about 800 feet
00:38:21to the south.
00:38:22It is clear that this area has a lot to offer humanity.
00:38:26What would happen if those sponge hunters didn't go to the area?
00:38:31Scientists found a shipwreck in Antarctica at the bottom of the Weddell Sea 107 years
00:38:37after it sank.
00:38:38The name of the ship was Endurance and it was the lost vessel of Antarctic explorer
00:38:42Sir Ernest Shackleton.
00:38:45Scientists who laid eyes on it decades later say it is among the greatest undiscovered
00:38:49shipwrecks ever.
00:38:51That is why they filmed the whole discovery.
00:38:54The video shows the remains of the Endurance and proves it is still in remarkable condition.
00:38:59It has been sitting in 10,000 feet of water for over a century yet it looks like it sank
00:39:04very recently.
00:39:05So the story goes like this.
00:39:07The ship was crushed by ice and sank in 1915.
00:39:11Shackleton and his crewmates had to escape by themselves in small lifeboats.
00:39:15From then on, it was all about survival.
00:39:18Shackleton imagined to get his crew to safety, then the ship sank.
00:39:22Yes, this is a pretty impressive story.
00:39:25But why did scientists prize this ship?
00:39:28Firstly, Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition sailed to make the first land crossing
00:39:34of Antarctica.
00:39:35Yes, the crew was trapped in ice, but the intention was important.
00:39:39Secondly, it's about the challenge itself of finding the shipwreck.
00:39:43The Weddell Sea is almost always covered in thick sea ice, you know, the same ice that
00:39:48made the Endurance sink.
00:39:50Getting near the presumed sinking location is super hard, let alone being able to conduct
00:39:55research.
00:39:57Experts of the Modern Expedition team foresaw the time when the lowest extent of Antarctic
00:40:01sea ice would come using satellite images.
00:40:04They realized that the weather was in their favor to start an expedition.
00:40:08Dr. John Shears said that they have successfully completed the world's most difficult shipwreck
00:40:13search, fighting against constantly shifting sea ice, blizzards, and temperatures decreasing
00:40:18to negative 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:40:20Yeesh, I can't imagine the worst conditions in Antarctica if these conditions are in their
00:40:25favor.
00:40:26Lastly, look at this.
00:40:28It's timbers.
00:40:29They're very much intact.
00:40:30Plus, you can read the ship's name.
00:40:33It's still visible.
00:40:35Canadian archaeologist, Menson Bound, says that this is the finest wooden shipwreck he
00:40:39has ever discovered.
00:40:41He has 50 years of career experience, so I believe the guy.
00:40:45So how come the wood is not rotten?
00:40:47Dr. Michelle Taylor, a deep-sea polar biologist, said that there has been little wood deterioration
00:40:53because the wood-munching animals are not in this forest-free region of Antarctica.
00:40:58Workers of a coal mine in East Serbia discovered three shipwrecks that had been there for at
00:41:02least 1,300 years.
00:41:05The largest shipwreck is an ancient Roman fleet.
00:41:08It's around 50 feet long with a flat bottom.
00:41:11It's estimated that the ship could carry a crew of 30 to 35 people.
00:41:15Looking at its hull, you can see the marks of repairs.
00:41:18Wow, this one had a lengthy career.
00:41:20You know, it gives us insight into more than a thousand years ago.
00:41:24The two smaller vessels, on the other hand, match descriptions of boats used by Slavic
00:41:29groups to attack the Roman frontier.
00:41:31These two have been discovered under mud and clay in an ancient riverbed.
00:41:35Apparently, in those times, there was a Roman base in a place called Viminacium City.
00:41:41Interestingly, Viminacium was a provincial capital with an estimated 40,000 inhabitants
00:41:46in the 4th century CE.
00:41:49For comparison, it was even larger than Pompeii.
00:41:52The Kostelac coal mine is a center of hidden gems.
00:41:56Archaeologists had found evidence of ancient human and animal activity here before.
00:42:00For instance, in 2012, experts found bones of at least five woolly mammoths, which went
00:42:06extinct about 10,000 years ago.
00:42:10Canadian archaeologists found a ship 150 years after it went missing in the Canadian Arctic
00:42:16waters.
00:42:17This merchant ship is called HMS Investigator.
00:42:20It was purchased in 1848 to search for the explorer Sir John Franklin's ship that got
00:42:26lost in the Northwest Passage expedition.
00:42:29So, HMS Investigator left Britain in 1850 for this rescue operation.
00:42:35The expedition crew, captained by Robert McClure, sailed the Investigator into the water.
00:42:40He realized that he was in the final leg of the Northwest Passage, the sea route across
00:42:45North America.
00:42:46But before he could sail into the Beaufort Sea, the 122-ton ship itself got stuck in
00:42:52the thick ice.
00:42:54The crew spent the winter over the Prince of Wales Strait.
00:42:57The following summer, McClure tried again to sail to the end of the passage, but the
00:43:01ice blocked his way once more.
00:43:04Here too, the crew was forced to leave the ship.
00:43:06He steered the crew into the Bay of Mercy.
00:43:08There, they were to remain until 1853 when the crew of the HMS Resolute rescued them.
00:43:15Imagine, a crew of 60 people who had to spend three winters in the Arctic without even knowing
00:43:20if they would survive.
00:43:22Later on, the ship was found sitting upright in about 36 feet of water.
00:43:26It was in very good condition.
00:43:28Arctic water has prevented the outer deck of the vessel from deteriorating quickly.
00:43:33The outline of the ship and its timber can be clearly seen.
00:43:36Plus, archaeologists have uncovered artifacts on land left by the sailors.
00:43:41They had unloaded everything before abandoning the Investigator.
00:43:45Three sailor graves and one British naval shipwreck had also been discovered in the
00:43:49area.
00:43:50I wonder what else they could find there?
00:43:53Well, storage hunting is really quite a gig these days.
00:43:56It's drawn a lot of attention from people all around the world too, since there are
00:44:00many TV shows focused on it.
00:44:03But it's not just storage hunters that can hit the jackpot with their findings.
00:44:08One couple from Arizona simply wanted a couch, but they weren't willing to buy a new one
00:44:12or pay a lot of money for it.
00:44:14So they participated in an auction, where they made a $10 offer for an old couch.
00:44:19Since that piece of furniture wasn't in the best shape, they ended up purchasing the
00:44:23couch and the container it came in.
00:44:26When going through the storage unit, they had the best surprise.
00:44:29They found an old teddy bear, filled with cash!
00:44:32That little toy ended up bringing them about $300,000!
00:44:36In 2011, another man came across an interesting discovery of his own after he examined the
00:44:43contents of a storage locker in San Fernando Valley.
00:44:47What he stumbled upon was a special comic book, called Action Comics No. 1.
00:44:52The man didn't really know how valuable his finding was until he took it to an expert
00:44:57for further evaluation.
00:44:59Turned out, the comic book was actually the first one featuring Superman!
00:45:04But as much as he wanted to profit from it, the man had to give it back to the previous
00:45:08owner.
00:45:10The story goes that the comic book was stolen from a famous actor, who was himself really
00:45:15passionate about comics, and Superman in particular.
00:45:18The actor had reported the book as missing to his insurance company and authorities,
00:45:22but it couldn't be found.
00:45:24The comic book, estimated to be worth somewhere around $1 million, reunited with its rightful
00:45:30owner 11 years after it had been stolen.
00:45:34Another incredible vintage object was found in a storage unit in Melbourne, Australia.
00:45:39It was a 1927 Harley-Davidson 8-valve racer with a sidecar.
00:45:45Based on experts' opinion, this fascinating vehicle had been sitting there for over half
00:45:49a century before resurfacing in 2015.
00:45:53It went for sale pretty soon afterwards, and was purchased for a whopping $470,000!
00:46:01Some auctions for abandoned storage units are fun just because you have no idea what
00:46:05you're going to find in there, and that's regardless of how much profit you'll end
00:46:09up making.
00:46:10It's the story of a couple from Long Island that spent only $100 on the best thing they'd
00:46:16ever purchased.
00:46:18Hidden inside their mystery unit was a custom 1976 Lotus Esprit Sport.
00:46:25Not only was this car special because of its design, but it was also the car that was used
00:46:30in the 1977 James Bond movie, The Spy Who Loved Me.
00:46:36At first, the couple had no idea the car was a famous one, so they just looked at how they
00:46:40could fix it so they could continue using it.
00:46:43I mean, it did look pretty cool!
00:46:46After they took it to a repair shop, they found out that there was something special
00:46:50about the vehicle.
00:46:51Soon enough, they discovered where it came from and ended up selling it at an auction
00:46:56in 2013.
00:46:57The price?
00:46:58A mind-boggling $997,000!
00:47:04Another person from Southern California found something incredible in an abandoned storage
00:47:08unit back in 2017.
00:47:11His locker ended up filled with vintage videos, game hardware, and game cartridges.
00:47:17After he took them for evaluation, he found out that his findings were worth over $50,000!
00:47:24In 2010, another person paid just $275 for a large storage unit that seemed to be filled
00:47:31with simple salon supplies.
00:47:34But after looking closely, the person discovered a hidden object that ended up being worth
00:47:39a lot!
00:47:40A 1928 Marshall & Wendell Salesman Piano!
00:47:44After further evaluation, the price of the musical instrument was estimated somewhere
00:47:49between $10,000 and $12,000.
00:47:53Space technology and a forgotten storage unit?
00:47:56This unit was auctioned off in Florida.
00:47:59After inspecting it, the owner realized it contained a NASA rocket and a countdown clock!
00:48:05Apparently, those were put into storage after the program they were supposed to be used
00:48:09in had been discontinued.
00:48:11The finding became so famous that it even made it on TV!
00:48:16Fans of famous singers may get some surprises in abandoned storage units too.
00:48:21Here's a story about a unit containing Aretha Franklin's personal belongings.
00:48:26Most of her things were transported there after an incident at her house.
00:48:29She ended up abandoning those items.
00:48:32Later, she admitted she had forgotten about them.
00:48:34At the auction, things like bags, articles of clothing, and even receipts in her name
00:48:40were presented to the public.
00:48:43Similarly, tucked away in a locker that used to be the property of Michael Jackson's
00:48:48dad, there were over 250 undiscovered and unreleased recordings.
00:48:54During the time the King of Pop wrote and produced those songs, he was between contracts,
00:48:59so technically, there was no legal ownership of the songs.
00:49:03More so, the locker contained a huge number of photos of the famous singer and personal
00:49:08objects belonging to the Jackson family.
00:49:11Some of these items were auctioned off, while some others were acquired back by the family
00:49:15at great expense.
00:49:17It goes to show that missing a payment on your storage unit can be detrimental to everyone,
00:49:21regardless of how famous you are.
00:49:25Not every item found in storage units is inanimate.
00:49:28As weird as that may sound, one story has it that a man kept stumbling upon a cat while
00:49:33regularly visiting his storage unit.
00:49:36He couldn't really figure out how she got in there and why she kept coming back to visit,
00:49:40so he decided to take her home.
00:49:43Never thought you'd find a furry new friend in a storage unit, right?
00:49:47Other storage locker stories are less fortunate.
00:49:50Like this one that happened in 2011, when a man thought he would hit the jackpot pretty
00:49:54easily if he could steal some valuables from an abandoned locker.
00:49:58But as he was filling his bags with the stuff he'd managed to get his hands on, a security
00:50:02guard saw that the door to the particular locker was open.
00:50:07Since he didn't hear any noise coming from inside, the guard decided to simply close
00:50:11the door.
00:50:12He thought that the owner had mistakenly left it open.
00:50:15Needless to say, the thief got stuck inside and was eventually caught and handed over
00:50:20to the police after he tried to escape.
00:50:23Keeping items in storage units may seem like a great idea when you need some space in your
00:50:27house but don't want to get rid of them just yet.
00:50:30However, you do need to know that there are a couple of rules you need to follow because
00:50:35not every item is safe or legal to keep in storage.
00:50:39Take vehicles for instance.
00:50:41In the US, most storage room suppliers only accept them if they're fully registered,
00:50:45insured and in operable condition.
00:50:48And this doesn't just apply to cars.
00:50:50I'm also talking about trailers, boats and even trucks.
00:50:54So you need to be prepared to offer all sorts of supporting documentation before you can
00:50:58move such an item into a storage facility.
00:51:02For obvious reasons, perishable items are a no-go.
00:51:05That includes food that needs to be refrigerated, food that is not kept in airtight containers
00:51:10and even dry pet food in some cases.
00:51:14Most companies that offer storage space stay away from such items because they can attract
00:51:18bugs and rodents or might encourage bacteria and mold to develop inside.
00:51:23You might think canned food is a no-go but in most places, it's not allowed either.
00:51:28That's because the standard storage unit does not have a specific way in which you can control
00:51:33the temperature inside and some food cans can burst in high heat environments.
00:51:40Plants aren't allowed in storage containers either.
00:51:43Not only do they need sunlight to thrive but they can be a source of bugs and pests too.
00:51:49More so, some plants can cause weird smells if not treated properly.
00:51:54So it's best if you plant them outside or give them away if you can't fit them inside
00:51:58your house anymore.
00:52:02You don't need to go to the end of the world or some exotic land to see strange things.
00:52:06You just need to go to Reddit.
00:52:08Check out how its users share weird and crazy stuff they found in their houses.
00:52:14It's rare when old finds in the house have any value but this married couple managed
00:52:18to win the jackpot.
00:52:19In Cleveland, Ohio, they started making home repairs.
00:52:23The man was tearing dusty boards from the ceiling in the basement when he noticed something
00:52:27behind bars.
00:52:28It was a small green suitcase.
00:52:30He found the second one in another part of the basement.
00:52:34At first, the husband and wife thought the suitcase contained some old baseball cards.
00:52:38But instead, they found a treasure worth 33,000 pounds.
00:52:43There were old banknotes and some of them were very rare.
00:52:46They were delighted with this find but didn't spend money on entertainment.
00:52:50According to the man, they used the cash to pay off their mortgage.
00:52:54These people were even luckier.
00:52:57Local residents of a small English town in North Yorkshire were doing repairs in the
00:53:01house.
00:53:02They discovered one of the largest hordes of 18th century English gold coins ever found
00:53:06in Great Britain.
00:53:07The owners removed a small clay cup the size of a soda can hidden in the concrete under
00:53:12the floorboards.
00:53:13The bowl's surface was covered with a thin layer of salt and inside, there were about
00:53:18260 gold coins.
00:53:21The estimated value of the entire treasure was about $200,000.
00:53:26But it all depends on the auction.
00:53:28Perhaps the amount will reach half a million.
00:53:31One user came to his mom's new multi-apartment building.
00:53:35He went to the basement and found a huge bank vault there.
00:53:38There was this round, thick metal door leading to the bank safe.
00:53:41He didn't find any money or gold, but the vault was in excellent condition.
00:53:45Of course, other Reddit users found out how this could happen.
00:53:49If a bank goes bankrupt, it takes all its belongings from the building except for a
00:53:54giant safe.
00:53:55The fact is that dismantling such an object requires huge costs.
00:53:59It can't be removed without expensive equipment, so banks leave their safes in the building.
00:54:04Another Reddit user wrote that a law firm bought a closed bank building and turned the
00:54:07vault into an office.
00:54:09They couldn't break through a thick wall in this room to install a window, so they just
00:54:13hung a photo with a window.
00:54:15Another user showed a rather creepy discovery made in the basement of his house.
00:54:20It was a huge hole leading into the darkness and filled with cold liquid.
00:54:24The user didn't panic and measured the pit.
00:54:26It was only 8 feet deep, half filled with ordinary water.
00:54:30He didn't find anything else, no secret room or dungeon.
00:54:33In fact, this was not just a pit, but a particular well called a cistern.
00:54:38And again, thanks to Reddit users for the answer.
00:54:41In the past, people installed such things in many homes to replenish water supplies.
00:54:46Cisterns were popular in dry areas where residents couldn't access a water supply system or when
00:54:51people were afraid that a river or reservoir was polluted.
00:54:54They collected rainwater and stored it in these wells.
00:54:57To avoid contamination from the surrounding soil, they cemented these pits.
00:55:02People used water for house cleaning, showering and laundry.
00:55:05You could even install filters in such a tank to drink clean water.
00:55:09This user found something strange not in his house, but in the basement of the office where
00:55:13he worked.
00:55:14In a dark, concrete room, among the junk, he saw a red iron door leading into the unknown.
00:55:20It closed at all times, was written on its cold surface.
00:55:24There were no locks or keyholes on it, only bolts.
00:55:27The user could have easily opened it, but didn't.
00:55:30Would you dare?
00:55:31The thing was actually not scary at all, but it was pretty dangerous.
00:55:35This is transformer storage with a powerful electrical voltage inside.
00:55:39It can explode or catch fire or even electrocute someone.
00:55:43Therefore, it was placed in the basement, away from people.
00:55:46No one except electricians is allowed to go there.
00:55:49Someone found a strange tiny room in the attic of their new apartment, behind a small
00:55:53iron door.
00:55:54Inside, the user found a small bed, several shelves and a small window.
00:55:58It seems that someone lived there.
00:56:00But who and why?
00:56:02There's almost no information about this.
00:56:05Imagine that you're walking through an abandoned house and suddenly see a phantom stuck in
00:56:09the wall and trying to escape.
00:56:11One Reddit user photographed an unusual installation in an abandoned house.
00:56:15It looks like a person trying to break out of the wall.
00:56:18Of course, there is no mystery or magic here, just someone's great sculptor skills.
00:56:23But still, it looks pretty creepy.
00:56:26Many users find secret rooms in their homes, and no one knows what those were used for
00:56:31and who lived there.
00:56:32But this guy found the most practical and valuable space.
00:56:35In the backyard of his house, he discovered a shelter from radioactive waste built in
00:56:39the 60s.
00:56:41It looks pretty atmospheric and safe.
00:56:44This user moved into a new house and found this strange white door in the wall.
00:56:49It looked like an area for a water heater or something, but it turned out that the door
00:56:52led to a strange room.
00:56:54It was small but cozy.
00:56:56Someone even put a carpet on the floor.
00:56:58But there was another door with a lock at the back of this room.
00:57:01The user opened the black door and stepped inside another, a much creepier room.
00:57:06The walls and ceiling were covered with soundproof plates and white plastic tarps.
00:57:11Also, he saw three to four outlets and some kind of pad that looked like a small bed.
00:57:16There was a briefcase on the floor with an old wooden box, envelopes with money from
00:57:19different countries, and four small silver bars.
00:57:23But the strangest thing in that place was a black safe.
00:57:26The user opened it and found several VHS cassettes and a white sheet.
00:57:30Save Yourself was written on it in black ink.
00:57:33The user wanted to share the contents of the tapes on Reddit.
00:57:36Many people thought that all this was fake and didn't believe him.
00:57:40But then another user said he knew the previous owner of the house.
00:57:43It was just an ordinary guy.
00:57:45Then the user posted the contents of the tapes.
00:57:47The recordings were quite unsettling.
00:57:50Someone suggested that all this was a promo campaign for some horror movie.
00:57:53But then the same user admitted that it was all a hoax that had gone out of control and
00:57:58become viral.
00:57:59He wrote a post where he described in detail how he created it, but the site administration
00:58:04deleted it.
00:58:05Let's finish our list with the most unusual apartment.
00:58:09Imagine that you're walking through a residential Parisian neighborhood and entering a multi-story
00:58:12building where ordinary people live.
00:58:15You go up the stairs and stop near an old door.
00:58:18You press the handle down and go inside.
00:58:20It seems to you that you're in a horror movie about ghosts.
00:58:23Cabinets, chairs, all the furniture here is made at the beginning of the last century.
00:58:28All the rooms look like an old antique store.
00:58:30Everything is covered with a thick layer of dust and cobwebs.
00:58:34There are sinister-looking dolls and stuffed toys on the floor.
00:58:37But nothing strange happened here.
00:58:39The owner left this place in the 40s.
00:58:41She left everything as it was.
00:58:43She moved to live somewhere else and didn't tell anyone about the apartment.
00:58:47Why she didn't come back is also unknown.
00:58:50The apartment has been in this condition for 70 years.
00:58:53The owner's relatives hired appraisers to estimate the cost of the apartment.
00:58:57In 2010, they went to this place, opened the door, and found a painting by Italian artist
00:59:03Giovanni Boldini, which he created in the 19th century.
00:59:07This painting was sold for $2.5 million.
00:59:15It's 1898, and you're taking part in excavations in Saqqara.
00:59:20This place, not far away from Cairo, is full of ancient tombs and pyramids.
00:59:25You're in your Indiana Jones mood and hope to find something really phenomenal to become
00:59:30famous.
00:59:31Gold, manuscripts, treasure maps, mummies of famous pharaohs.
00:59:36Wait, a wooden bird?
00:59:39You're really disappointed as it looks like a regular toy.
00:59:42An old one, but still.
00:59:45Little do you know that years later, someone would propose that your bird was actually
00:59:49an ancient monoplane.
00:59:54So the artifact, nicknamed the Saqqara Bird, is made of a sycamore tree.
00:59:59The birdie has a wingspan of just 7 inches and weighs around 40 grams.
01:00:04A perfect original souvenir from Egypt, I would say.
01:00:08It's over 2,000 years old and looks pretty plain without any carvings of feathers or
01:00:13other intricate ornaments.
01:00:15It has a beak and eyes though, which makes our find look like a hawk, the emblem of the
01:00:20deity Horus.
01:00:22Its tail is rather unusual as it's squared, looks weirdly upright, and it seems like the
01:00:28sunken part of it was the place for a now missing piece.
01:00:34Humans love solving a good mystery, so there have been several attempts to explain the
01:00:39use of the birdie.
01:00:40First, quite simply, is that it was a ceremonial object.
01:00:44The second idea is that it was a toy for a child from some well-off family.
01:00:49It could have been some sort of boomerang, which was a popular concept in ancient Egypt.
01:00:55Then there was a theory that the bird had been used as a weather vane, but this one
01:01:00has been debunked as the figure doesn't have any holes or markings, except for the
01:01:05one made at the museum in Cairo to fix the exhibit on a stick.
01:01:09So there was no way to hang it in the past.
01:01:13Almost a century after the bird was found, Egyptologist Dr. Khalil Masiha proposed a
01:01:19new theory that it could have been a model of a monoplane.
01:01:23He believed the bird was missing a horizontal tailplane, otherwise it had its wings set
01:01:29at a right angle, similar to that of modern planes.
01:01:33It could have worked to generate the aerodynamic lift necessary for flights.
01:01:37Dr. Masiha also claimed that it was common at that time to place miniature models of
01:01:43technological inventions in tombs.
01:01:46So did the ancient Egyptians really invent the plane in 200 BCE?
01:01:52That would make the Wright brothers, who are considered the inventors of aviation,
01:01:57really, really upset.
01:02:00They made one of their first flights only in 1903.
01:02:06There's just one way to know for sure, and that is to test the model.
01:02:11But you know, the ancient museum in Cairo would unlikely let one of their cherished
01:02:15exhibits fly around like a toy.
01:02:18That's why glider designer Martin Gregory built a similar model, this time of balsa
01:02:24wood, and concluded that even with the missing tailplane, the plane wasn't much of a flyer.
01:02:30Case solved?
01:02:31Not really.
01:02:33This didn't sound convincing enough to the History Channel, so they invited an aerodynamics
01:02:38expert to build another replica of the bird.
01:02:42He tested it in weather conditions similar to those in Egypt and was impressed with the
01:02:47little plane's abilities.
01:02:50So if they did invent the prototype of a plane back in the times of pharaohs, it would be
01:02:55a good example of an upart.
01:02:58That's an out-of-place artifact, an object that's way ahead of its time in terms of technology
01:03:04or history.
01:03:05And the Saqqara bird isn't the only example of such a revolutionary concept.
01:03:11In 1901, a group of divers retrieved the Antikythera mechanism from an underwater shipwreck near
01:03:17the Greek island of Antikythera.
01:03:20It's been dubbed the world's first analog computer, and it's currently dated around 100 BCE.
01:03:27The bronze mechanism could tell the position of the sun, moon, planets, and stars, as well
01:03:32as the lunar phase, the dates of upcoming solar eclipses, and even the speed at which
01:03:38the moon moves through the sky.
01:03:41No one's sure who used it and how or where it was made.
01:03:46But it's obvious that it's extremely precise and way too advanced for its time.
01:03:52The first flushing toilets in the world were invented in the middle of the 20th century.
01:03:57Just kidding.
01:03:59The ancient Minoans on the Mediterranean island of Crete and the Indus Valley civilization
01:04:04both came up with this brilliant invention at the same time, around 4,000 years ago.
01:04:10The plumbing and sanitation were so well done that no one managed to design anything better
01:04:16until 2,000 years later.
01:04:19One ancient Minoan lavatory was discovered at the palace of Knossos.
01:04:24It looks like it had a wooden seat set over a tunnel that directed water from a rooftop
01:04:29reservoir to an underground sewer.
01:04:33Other varieties got water from jugs.
01:04:35Only the super-rich people could afford all this glory.
01:04:40So if you wanted to shop for real estate back then, the flushing toilet would be a telltale
01:04:45sign you were in the rich neighborhood.
01:04:49Automated doors became a cool, seemingly new invention back in 1931.
01:04:55But the technology behind them is actually much older.
01:04:59Think the first century CE old.
01:05:03Mathematician and engineer Heron of Alexandria came up with a hydraulic system to open and
01:05:10close temple doors.
01:05:12To bring it into action, you need to light a fire to produce heat.
01:05:17There was a brass pot under the fire, half filled with water.
01:05:21The inventor connected the brass pot to containers that acted as weights.
01:05:26When the fire was burning, the water moved into the containers.
01:05:30They went down and pulled the ropes.
01:05:33It was nothing like a supermarket door that opens in front of you before you even have
01:05:37time to think.
01:05:40Heron's door took hours to open, and there was no way to stop the process.
01:05:45That's why they only opened the doors once a day before people entered the temple, to
01:05:50add some mysticism at the temple during ceremonies.
01:05:53Spooky!
01:05:56Looks like the first ever battery was invented in Baghdad around 2,000 years ago.
01:06:02A German archaeologist found this oval-shaped clay jar in 1938.
01:06:08Scientists are still not sure what purpose it served and who exactly invented it.
01:06:14There is a theory that it was used for electroplating objects with precious metals.
01:06:19When they filled it with a weak acid like vinegar, the battery produced around 1 volt
01:06:24of electricity.
01:06:26Another theory says it was a vessel for sacred scrolls.
01:06:31Would you like to buy contact lenses designed by Leonardo da Vinci himself?
01:06:35In 1508, he invented a glass lens with a funnel on one side.
01:06:41You were supposed to wear it with water inside to improve your vision.
01:06:45Sounds a bit uncomfortable, doesn't it?
01:06:48So around a century later, French scientist René Descartes decided to improve the idea
01:06:54and make the cornea contact the future lenses.
01:06:58Contacts because they contact your eyes, get it?
01:07:02The glass tube with liquid did help improve vision, but blinking was sadly impossible.
01:07:08Two and a half centuries later, new technologies in the glass industry let scientists design
01:07:13contacts that would fit in the eye and even let the wearer blink.
01:07:17Thanks guys!
01:07:18Still, those lenses were made of heavy blown glass and didn't let the eye breathe.
01:07:24About 50 years later, contacts became plastic, lightweight, unbreakable, and scratch-resistant
01:07:30but still covering the entire eye.
01:07:33And then, in 1948, an English optical technician accidentally sanded down a plastic lens and
01:07:39figured out they'd still be in place even if they covered only the cornea.
01:07:45Imagine you're living in 19th century London and need to send a message to New York.
01:07:50It would have taken about 10 days to get there by ship.
01:07:54So when delivery time went from days to hours in 1858, it was a true sensation.
01:08:00The first message was sent by Queen Victoria herself.
01:08:04It was all made possible thanks to the transatlantic telegraph cable running under the ocean.
01:08:10Sadly, the new cool invention only lasted a few weeks.
01:08:14It took years to bring it back to life.
01:08:18You don't need to fly to another planet to discover some mysterious unidentified artifacts.
01:08:24People find them on planet Earth all the time.
01:08:28Like this funky metal disc.
01:08:31One internet user claimed to have found this item in a regular package of sour cream chips.
01:08:36The disc had a serial number, weight, and metal type information engraved on its surface.
01:08:42Unfortunately, it's not an ancient coin and not a box prize.
01:08:48It's the result of defective packaging.
01:08:50Manufacturers put metal test objects in some of the bags to test whether their X-ray detector
01:08:56works properly.
01:08:58That's how they prevent any magnetic rubbish in the bags like splinters or tiny details
01:09:02from the machines.
01:09:04Ideally, the X-ray system should detect all the packages with metal objects and sort them
01:09:09out.
01:09:10But apparently, sometimes it makes exceptions.
01:09:13So if you find something like this in your chips, it makes sense to contact the manufacturers
01:09:18to help them prevent dangers for other people.
01:09:21They will have to do an internal investigation and fix the metal detectors and document flow.
01:09:28But the most important question is, to eat or not to eat?
01:09:32Well, the chips might be edible, but keep in mind that the disc wasn't completely hygienic
01:09:37when it fell on the conveyor.
01:09:39But no worries, usually manufacturers send a few boxes of their product and some money
01:09:44certificates as an apology.
01:09:47And since we're talking about packaging mysteries, did you know why shoe manufacturers often
01:09:52put these tiny tags in their boxes?
01:09:55In some cases, they just show samples of materials used to manufacture the shoes.
01:10:00But others look like multi-purpose souvenirs that can be used as a decoration for laces
01:10:05or a keychain, because they have a special loophole on the top or a small chain.
01:10:11Metal shoe tags can make great zipper pulls for winter coats or bags, by the way.
01:10:16In any case, this is another opportunity for shoe brands to remind the customers about
01:10:22themselves.
01:10:24So if you ever find such a tag in your brand new shoe box, don't rush to throw it in
01:10:28the trash.
01:10:29Perhaps one day, you'll be able to auction it as a rare vintage piece.
01:10:35A regular thimble helps to protect the thumb while sewing.
01:10:39It looks pretty compact and convenient.
01:10:42But what about this epic piece?
01:10:44Is it a medieval thimble for knights?
01:10:47A woodworking tool?
01:10:49Or a Halloween accessory?
01:10:51In fact, it's an antique finger guard for husking corn and similar tasks.
01:10:56It has a leather bracelet to fix the glove on the wrist and a special weave of metal
01:11:01links providing flexibility.
01:11:03You can also see it titled Oyster or Butcher Thumb Gloves because this tool was used for
01:11:08protecting users from sharp objects.
01:11:11This particular design was patented at the beginning of the 20th century in the USA.
01:11:19Imagine walking in the woods and facing this scene.
01:11:23Someone slathered a blue plastic can in grease, attached a bag, and hung it on a tree.
01:11:29What in the world would that mean?
01:11:31It's a DIY Deerfly Trap Contraption.
01:11:35Studies reveal that flies are more attracted to blue things, which explains the color of
01:11:40the trap.
01:11:41Unlike the common flies, deerflies inflict painful bites which may cause allergic reactions
01:11:46and spread diseases.
01:11:48So if you want to avoid special attention from these annoying creatures, don't wear
01:11:52bright blue outfits while hiking.
01:11:56As for the trash bag on the bottom, it's probably left on purpose to throw away the
01:12:00can after the trap expires.
01:12:04Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seatbelts.
01:12:07Don't forget about your knees too.
01:12:09One internet user saw this unusual knee-wrapping belt on a plane and posted it online to figure
01:12:14out its purpose.
01:12:16Any ideas?
01:12:18It's a sitting back support system with a knee strap.
01:12:21This product is designed for easing and preventing back strain caused by slouching and poor posture.
01:12:28Customers can use it daily for more comfortable sitting or driving.
01:12:31Unlike ergonomic chairs, this system is pretty handy and portable.
01:12:36Even NASA astronauts used it during space missions to take care of their bodies.
01:12:42Have you ever found a witch bottle full of weird mysterious stuff?
01:12:46Well, if the answer is yes, you probably know that it's a bad idea to open up an old jar
01:12:52unless you're 100% sure it's safe.
01:12:56But what about this confusing finding?
01:12:58Would you bet that this fluffy white stuff isn't toxic?
01:13:03No worries, unknown doesn't always mean dangerous.
01:13:06It's just a couple of silkworm cocoon balls.
01:13:09Some people store such things as a souvenir from a silkworm factory.
01:13:14Others use them as a fancy skincare product to remove blackheads and gain radiant skin.
01:13:20Here's another example of an unidentified bottle-like finding.
01:13:25Is it a genie trap or does it serve a more ordinary purpose?
01:13:29Sorry to disappoint you, but it's just an oil lamp.
01:13:32Before everyone started using electricity, these heavy, sophisticated tools helped to
01:13:37create light.
01:13:39Some of them have a more complicated design than others because they come with a mirror
01:13:43or reflector attached to them, or special details to reduce the heat and flame.
01:13:50But the technology is still pretty easy.
01:13:52Oil is put in the belly and the wick goes in the spout.
01:13:56When you light the wick, the flame burns on the end of the spout.
01:14:00Then you'll be able to carry this lantern around with you like a little candle.
01:14:04And you'll have the light to start fulfilling your three wishes on your own.
01:14:09Brace yourself because the next one can be really triggering.
01:14:13Any idea what it might be?
01:14:15A prehistoric turtle, a high-fashion jewelry piece, or a guest from another planet?
01:14:21Nope, those are the throat teeth of a freshwater drumfish.
01:14:26From the outside, drumfish look like many others, but they have a unique set of molar-like
01:14:31teeth packed together at the back of their mouth.
01:14:35These teeth are placed just near the throat.
01:14:37The dental formations vary depending on the species and their diet.
01:14:42This explains why their creepy throat pictures on the internet look slightly different.
01:14:47Seems like this design is meant to scare the life out of people with trypophobia.
01:14:54But in fact, they help to break down hard food such as mollusks and crustaceans.
01:14:59The drumfish typically find their prey on small fishes or invertebrates.
01:15:04Although they lack teeth in the front part of their mouth, they can still eat hard-shelled
01:15:09food thanks to their pharyngeal teeth.
01:15:12So if you ever see this thing on a beach, don't rush to run away or faint.
01:15:16It won't bite you.
01:15:19What would you do if you dug a random item out of your own body?
01:15:24One Reddit user found a yellow plastic ball in his ear!
01:15:28It wasn't bothering him at all or affecting his hearing.
01:15:32His doctor made this discovery accidentally.
01:15:35After a brief research, he revealed that this ball was likely an airsoft pellet.
01:15:40But the reason why it was found in his own ear still remains a mystery.
01:15:46Let's take a look at this tool.
01:15:48Does it remind you of something?
01:15:50Maybe it's some kind of medical equipment accidentally dropped by a doctor rushing to
01:15:54their lab.
01:15:55Nope, it's just a Lego part.
01:15:58Although it looks pretty confusing when out of context, it's a pair of red balloons held
01:16:03by a figure.
01:16:04Case solved!
01:16:07Would you freak out to find this spiky plastic thing in a dusty attic?
01:16:12Looks like a mini board for standing on nails.
01:16:15But in fact, this piece has nothing to do with stimulating nerve endings.
01:16:20It's a drying rack with spikes designed for drying bottles or cups.
01:16:24They're placed on the spikes upside down which provides convenient fixation until dry.
01:16:30Some say it's a great tool to dry sanitized bottles because it allows you to make sure
01:16:35that they don't come into contact with dirty surfaces.
01:17:31a giant 45 feet tall stalagmite with a circumference of 243 feet.
01:17:39Other amazing sites you might want to visit include a caveman balancing on top of a flowstone
01:17:45wall, a frozen waterfall, and a forest of tall stalagmites.
01:17:52You're probably curious, how did such an exciting place make it onto the list of the scariest
01:17:58caves out there?
01:18:00The thing is, the sheer size of the cave is still unknown and only about 2 miles of it
01:18:06are mapped and open to the public.
01:18:09But the cave can and does show its dangerous side from time to time.
01:18:13For example, the directors of the 1984 sci-fi movie, What Waits Below, filmed a lot of scenes
01:18:19in cathedral caverns.
01:18:22But during the shooting, 17 cast and crew members got carbon monoxide poisoning and
01:18:27had to be immediately taken to a hospital, barely avoiding serious consequences.
01:18:33But let's move further to Moaning Cavern in California.
01:18:38What makes it particularly creepy is the bizarre breathing sound.
01:18:42It's produced by water dripping through bottle-like openings at the base of the cave.
01:18:48If a person who's unaware of the nature of this breathing comes close, this ominous respiration
01:18:54might cause them to steer clear of the place.
01:18:58On the other hand, these moaning sounds might have evoked curiosity in some adventurous
01:19:03souls, and usually it didn't end well.
01:19:07Researchers have found the remains of more than 100 prehistoric people who fell down
01:19:12the cave's 410-foot chasm around 13,000 years ago.
01:19:18These days, you can go on a tour around the cave, but no deeper than 165 feet into the
01:19:25vertical opening.
01:19:26If you're feeling particularly bold, you can rappel down.
01:19:32But you'll still have to exit using a gothic-looking wrought iron staircase.
01:19:37Be careful not to slip.
01:19:38It's a long way down.
01:19:41The next cave we'll visit is ominously called Hell Hole.
01:19:45You can find it in West Virginia.
01:19:48It's notorious enough to inspire a few horror movies.
01:19:53Despite its name, the place is chilly, but no less creepy for this discrepancy.
01:19:59The average temperature inside the cave is 47 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes it the
01:20:04perfect home for a large variety of bats and other rare cave-dwelling inhabitants.
01:20:11In fact, in the winter, the cave accommodates about half of the world's population of Virginia
01:20:17big-eared bats.
01:20:19These are critically endangered and highly vulnerable creatures.
01:20:24But it won't stop a chill from running down your spine once you see a cloud of 20,000
01:20:29squeaking, wing-fluttering bats.
01:20:33Bell Witch Cave is a relatively small formation located in Tennessee.
01:20:39And despite its innocent appearance, it serves as the focal point for an equally fantastic
01:20:44and terrifying story.
01:20:47According to the legend, in the early part of the 19th century, the farmer and his family
01:20:52suffered from the mischief of a ghost.
01:20:56It made a lot of noise at night, ripped sheets from beds, and even physically attacked the
01:21:00farmer and some of his family members.
01:21:03Eventually, the farmer passed away, and a vial with unknown black liquid was found next
01:21:09to him.
01:21:10Some people believed that the ghost had somehow poisoned him.
01:21:15Soon after that, the spirit left the farmer's family alone.
01:21:21Locals were sure the ghost had returned to a cave near the farm.
01:21:24They also believed the mystical creature promised to return when the time was right.
01:21:29Even today, local inhabitants report strange occurrences happening around the cave.
01:21:35They swear they are linked to the ghost once taunting the farmer's family.
01:21:40I bet that no matter how skeptical you are, the cave will make your skin crawl.
01:21:46And this is Wind Cave in South Dakota.
01:21:50At first glance, it might seem that there's nothing super scary about this cavern.
01:21:55No roiling mass of bats, no ancient remains or toxic gases.
01:22:01But the cave is home to a blood-chilling and very rare geological feature.
01:22:07Nowhere else in the world will you find a more extensive network of boxwork calcite.
01:22:14How did Wind Cave create the perfect conditions for the boxwork remains?
01:22:19It's still a mystery, but what you do notice is that this boxwork resembles a massive spider
01:22:24web a bit too much for comfort.
01:22:27Even though it's just a geological anomaly, it's hard to look at the boxwork and not imagine
01:22:33tons of cave spiders skittering along those thin strands of hardened minerals.
01:22:38Now, let me take you to a place that seems to be out of this world.
01:22:45There's nothing mysterious or dangerous about this place, but it's kinda unique.
01:22:51Life inside this cave has been isolated from the outside world for about five and a half
01:22:56million years, and it does show.
01:23:00See for yourself.
01:23:02Because of such long isolation, the conditions inside Mobile Cave are like nowhere else in
01:23:07the world.
01:23:10Despite a severe lack of sunlight inside the cave and the toxicity of the air, a unique
01:23:15ecosystem is flourishing there.
01:23:19The cave is located a few miles west of the Black Sea in Romania, and it was first found
01:23:24in 1986.
01:23:26These days, you can only visit it if you have special permission.
01:23:31But even if you have it, the central caverns are guarded naturally by super narrow limestone
01:23:37tunnels and vertical shafts, so those who are familiar with claustrophobia shouldn't
01:23:43enter this place.
01:23:45In the depth of the cave, the air has twice less oxygen than the air outside.
01:23:51It contains a lot of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, which means it's not the freshest
01:23:56air you can breathe.
01:23:58It's also pitch black inside the cavern.
01:24:01But despite, or should I say, thanks to, this cocktail of extremely harsh conditions, the
01:24:07site is a true goldmine for biologists.
01:24:10Life seems to be booming here.
01:24:13In a 1996 study, scientists identified 48 species living there.
01:24:1833 of them are unique to the cave.
01:24:22Most of the creatures inhabiting the cave are tiny.
01:24:25They have long limbs and antennae, helping them navigate in the dark.
01:24:30They also have no vision and lack pigment, which makes sense.
01:24:34Why would you need to be able to see if you live in total darkness, and why would you
01:24:38need to be pretty and colorful with no one to see you?
01:24:42Now, get ready to explore one more cave, no less amazing, but very different.
01:24:50This is the Giant Crystal Cave, aka Cave of the Crystals, in Mexico.
01:24:57These massive crystals were found in 2000 by a mining company after the water was pumped
01:25:02out of the cave.
01:25:04Two miners then entered the drying cave on foot and saw the crystals.
01:25:08These awe-inspiring crystals are actually massive gypsum pillars hidden 984 feet underground.
01:25:16Scientists estimate that the crystals could have been already growing for half a million
01:25:20years.
01:25:21That's why many of them are so long and wide that you can walk across them.
01:25:27Unfortunately, visiting this wonder of nature is impossible at the moment.
01:25:33But maybe it's for the better, since Giant Crystal Cave is a dangerous place that can
01:25:38easily turn into a trap.
01:25:41For tens of thousands of years, it was filled with groundwater, which was originally pushed
01:25:46upward into the opening by a magma chamber located in the depths of our planet.
01:25:51The magma under the cave kept the water hot, but eventually the temperature of the water
01:25:56dipped below 136 degrees Fahrenheit.
01:26:01As a result, the water started to fill with calcium and sulfate, whose particles began
01:26:06to recombine into gypsum, and then white-tinted crystals took over the cave.
01:26:12And since they stayed underwater, they were able to keep growing.
01:26:17Alrighty, folks, gather around and let me tell you about the Manananggal, a real charmer
01:26:24of a mythical creature from Filipino folklore.
01:26:28She's often described as a lady who likes to snack on sleeping pregnant women, but here's
01:26:32the twist.
01:26:33During the day, she's all dolled up and looking like a total babe, but come nightfall, she
01:26:39detaches her torso and spreads her massive bat-like wings to fly off into the darkness
01:26:43in search of her next victim.
01:26:46And she doesn't just stop at pregnant ladies.
01:26:48Nope, sometimes she'll use her good looks to lead a stray man and take them to her secret
01:26:53hiding spot, where she'll feast on their heart, intestines, and other internal organs all
01:26:59night long.
01:27:00Yikes.
01:27:01If you're ever faced with a Manananggal and want to stop her from reattaching her body
01:27:05before sunrise, just sprinkle some salt, ash, or crushed garlic on the remaining half
01:27:10of her body.
01:27:11Easy-peasy.
01:27:12Right?
01:27:13So keep an eye out for this winged wonder and don't forget the garlic.
01:27:17Okay, so check this out.
01:27:20In German folklore, there's this crazy creature called an Owl.
01:27:23Basically, it's like a vampire mixed with an incubus, and it wears this dope hat called
01:27:29a Tarn Cap that gives it all kinds of powers.
01:27:33This dude is all about preying on women at night by messing with their dreams.
01:27:37Oh, and it's into breast milk and sucking the blood of men and kids.
01:27:41The Owl can shapeshift into all kinds of stuff, like cats, pigs, dogs, snakes, and even butterflies.
01:27:48And it's got this evil eye that can totally mess you up with bad luck or sickness.
01:27:53But don't worry.
01:27:54You can protect yourself by hiding a broomstick under your pillow, pointing your shoes towards
01:27:58the door, hanging iron horseshoes from the bedpost, or putting a mirror on your chest.
01:28:04And if all else fails, just leave the lights on all night and shove a lemon in its mouth
01:28:10if you catch it napping during the day.
01:28:13Meet the Pontianak, a spooky ghost from Malay mythology.
01:28:18Legend has it that she was a woman who passed away while giving birth, and now she's out
01:28:23for revenge.
01:28:24She's not your average ghost, either.
01:28:27She's got long black hair, sharp fingernails, and a blood-smeared white dress.
01:28:31But watch out, because she's also a master of disguise.
01:28:35She can transform into a beautiful woman to lure in her prey before ripping out their
01:28:40insides.
01:28:41If you're ever out at night and hear the cries of babies or feminine laughter, beware.
01:28:46That could be the Pontianak coming to get you.
01:28:49And if the sounds are quiet, she might be right around the corner.
01:28:53So keep your wits about you, and don't fall for any too-good-to-be-true ladies.
01:28:58Hey, did you know that according to Irish legend, every family has their very own banshee?
01:29:05This banshee lady is supposed to let out a piercing wail or shout when someone in the
01:29:09family is about to kick the bucket.
01:29:11Talk about a not-so-subtle warning.
01:29:13But don't let her eerie cry trick you.
01:29:16This banshee lady is said to be drop-dead gorgeous, with long-flowing locks and crimson
01:29:21eyes from all her crying.
01:29:23She's also known for wearing a gray shawl over her green threads.
01:29:27Fashionable and spooky?
01:29:30We're into it.
01:29:31Some people even say that this banshee can transform into a sweet-singing young lady
01:29:35who foretells the doom of the family.
01:29:37Yikes.
01:29:38And if that's not enough to give you goosebumps, she's also been spotted hunched over in the
01:29:43woods, crying her eyes out at night.
01:29:46Sounds like a real party animal, doesn't she?
01:29:49So next time you hear a blood-curdling scream in the middle of the night, just remember,
01:29:54it might just be your friendly neighborhood banshee giving you a heads-up.
01:29:58Now let me tell you about the Kalu Piliwit.
01:30:01These creatures are like the boogeyman of the Arctic.
01:30:04They live near the ice flows and are known for snatching up kids who get too close to
01:30:08the water.
01:30:09But don't worry, it's just a myth to keep children safe.
01:30:12Now, the appearance of these critters varies from story to story, but they all have some
01:30:17things in common.
01:30:19They've got slimy green skin, long hair, and long fingernails.
01:30:24Their hands are webbed like a fish, and they wear these fancy parkas made out of eider
01:30:28duck feathers.
01:30:29Oh, and watch out for their flippers.
01:30:32One of them can emit a sound that'll paralyze you.
01:30:34But don't fret, you can outsmart them.
01:30:37Some clever Inuit hunters figured out that if they asked the Kalu Piliwit to shapeshift
01:30:42into a seal or whale, they could easily finish it and bring home a tasty catch.
01:30:47Yum!
01:30:48Some stories say that these creatures use kidnapped children to keep their hair looking
01:30:51fabulous.
01:30:52Talk about dedication to hair care.
01:30:55Others say that the kids are just devoured or used to fuel the Kalu Piliwit's youth.
01:31:00But here's a wild tale for you.
01:31:02There was once a grandma who couldn't feed her grandson, so she called upon a Kalu Piliwit
01:31:06to take him away.
01:31:07The tribe eventually got back on their feet, and a young couple went to rescue the boy.
01:31:13They found him tethered to seaweed by the Kalu Piliwit.
01:31:16But every time they got close, she'd drag him back underwater.
01:31:20They ended up waiting until sunrise to cut him loose.
01:31:24Yeah, the Kalu Piliwit may be spooky, but they're just looking out for the kiddos.
01:31:29And who knows, maybe they'll give you some hair care tips if you're lucky enough to meet one.
01:31:35Let me present to you the scariest horse-like monster in all of Scotland.
01:31:39The Nuklavi, or Nukalavi.
01:31:42This bad boy has a skinless body, a head ten times bigger than a human's,
01:31:46and a breath so poisonous it can destroy animals and crops.
01:31:50So, it's got wicked powers that can cause chaos all over the islands.
01:31:54But fear not, because there's an old spirit known as the Seamither
01:31:58who can control this terrifying beast during the summer months.
01:32:02The Nukalavi has roots in Norse and Orcadian folklore,
01:32:05and was first documented by the mysterious Joe Benn
01:32:08using some fancy Latin manuscripts back in the 16th century.
01:32:12Ernest Marwick, an Orcadian writer and folklorist,
01:32:16thinks that this evil sea creature is similar to the Norwegian Gnaw,
01:32:20the Nuggle of the Shetland, and the Shapeshifting Kelpie, or Water Kelpie.
01:32:24So, if you're ever out and about in Scotland and come across this scary guy,
01:32:28just remember, call on the Seamither and run for your life.
01:32:33This dude is South African Tokolosha.
01:32:36It may look like a gremlin, but trust me, it's way more mischievous.
01:32:40Apparently, witches and shamans can summon them with their magical powers,
01:32:44but there are ways to keep these troublemakers in check.
01:32:48One way is to give them some curdled milk—apparently it's their favorite—
01:32:52and trim their hair so they can see.
01:32:55If that doesn't work, you can call in a witch doctor
01:32:58to use some good old-fashioned magic to exorcise them away.
01:33:02Now, according to South African folklore,
01:33:05Tokoloshas are mostly invisible and can suck on a stone to stay that way.
01:33:09So, if you want to keep them away from your home,
01:33:12scatter some special blessed salts, a.k.a. Tokolosha salts,
01:33:16along your door frames and windowsills.
01:33:19Or, if you're feeling extra cautious, put some bricks under your bed's legs.
01:33:23Better safe than sorry, right?
01:33:27Have you heard of the Chimera?
01:33:29She's a total monster—literally!
01:33:32This fire-breathing female hybrid is made up of all sorts of animal parts.
01:33:36Think lion-like body, goat-like head, and a tail that ends in a snake's head.
01:33:41According to Greek mythology, the Chimera is the child of Typhon and Echidna,
01:33:46and her sisters are Cerberus and Lernean Hydra.
01:33:49Sounds like a family reunion, huh?
01:33:51But don't worry, our hero Bellerophon was up for the challenge.
01:33:55The king of Lycia sent him on a mission to defeat the fearsome Chimera,
01:33:59and Bellerophon was the greatest hero monsters were scared of.
01:34:03The Chimera was no match for Bellerophon and his trusty Pegasus.
01:34:07Even though the king was secretly hoping the Chimera would take out Bellerophon instead,
01:34:12in the end, justice prevailed, and the Chimera was defeated.
01:34:17Are you afraid of the dark?
01:34:19There are some places where you don't want to be in.
01:34:22Deep inside the mines is already scary,
01:34:25but it's the stories behind it that make my skin crawl.
01:34:30The Ringwood Mine in New Jersey might sound like a typical mine for some people,
01:34:35but for others, it's a place that no one wants to go.
01:34:39It was once a thriving mine with one of the largest iron productions in the world.
01:34:44More than a hundred years ago in the early 1900s,
01:34:47people abandoned the mine and it's still open for curious tourists to take a peek.
01:34:52During its heyday, thousands of workers would get up every day
01:34:56and prepare themselves to work in very dangerous conditions.
01:34:59The mine was prone to cave-ins and various accidents that happened regularly.
01:35:04People were getting underpaid even though they knew how dangerous it was to be there.
01:35:09Think less than a single dollar per day to get dirty and without sunlight for most of your day.
01:35:16But that's not the reason why people nowadays avoid it.
01:35:19It's because there were reports of paranormal activity down there.
01:35:23Some of the locals claim they heard footsteps and voices originating from inside the mines
01:35:28years before it was abandoned.
01:35:31Some people saw figures walking around their homes while holding lanterns in their hands,
01:35:36something which was very common back in those days.
01:35:39Although people have claimed to hear these strange noises,
01:35:42there's no evidence to suggest that it was anything paranormal.
01:35:46Back in those days between the 1800s and the early 1900s,
01:35:50there weren't any proper treatments or precautions for safety and health.
01:35:55People needed to work and this was a quick way of earning money.
01:35:59No one ever thought about being down a mining shaft was scary or not.
01:36:03Imagine you're one of those workers who are about to finish your shift
01:36:06when the lantern above you starts to die out.
01:36:09You get some matches and try to ignite them but no luck.
01:36:13After a while, you realize that it's just you down there and everyone else has left.
01:36:19You pack up your gear and make your way out following the string of lights
01:36:23that were placed strategically so that no one gets lost down there.
01:36:27As you make your way through the narrow path,
01:36:29you start hearing voices coming from behind the walls.
01:36:33At first, you don't think much of it considering the reverberation of sounds within the mines.
01:36:39But then, you listen closely and realize that these sounds seem like
01:36:43they're literally coming from within the walls that are too thick to be heard from outside.
01:36:48You glue your ear to the walls and hear someone call your name.
01:36:54You jolt and run towards the mouth of the cave.
01:36:56However, the lights are flickering and the voices are getting louder and louder.
01:37:01The voices are jumbling together creating an incoherent mix of weird gibberish
01:37:05and what appears to sound like someone chanting your name.
01:37:09Your heart is racing and you're sweating profusely.
01:37:12You don't really know where you're going since everything looks the same.
01:37:15Suddenly, you hear the sound of rumbling coming from the belly of the mine
01:37:19and then silence. Everything is black.
01:37:23That's what it would feel like if you were a miner during those days.
01:37:27Back to the creepy stories.
01:37:31In West Riding, England, the name Oaks Pit strikes fear into the local community.
01:37:37The people of Barnsley remember that the mining site was one of the mining disasters
01:37:42in British history on December 12th, 1866.
01:37:46The gases inside the mines ignited a fire causing a major explosion.
01:37:52The fire spread and raged on for many days
01:37:55destroying the mining equipment and wooden supports that were built.
01:37:59Finally, around 100 tons of coal collapsed into a crater at the mouth of the shaft
01:38:04sealing it for good.
01:38:06However, very recently, people began to notice something strange.
01:38:12Quite recently, a team specialized in otherworldly phenomena
01:38:16decided to investigate the site to try and figure out what happened there.
01:38:21They got around to see if there was anything left that they could communicate with.
01:38:26In the end, the team concluded that this place was indeed freaky.
01:38:31There wasn't enough evidence to prove that the place was haunted.
01:38:35During the early 1900s, there was a silver rush in Alaska
01:38:39in the western part of the Wrangel Mountains.
01:38:42The Tonopah Mining District, which is now a museum,
01:38:45was part of a park that hosted plenty of buildings
01:38:48such as a blacksmith shop and a hospital, among others.
01:38:51While there isn't any particular story like the previous ones,
01:38:55this mine is known to be haunted.
01:38:58There are plenty of theories behind it.
01:39:00Some say it's ancient spirits occupying the mines,
01:39:03while others say it's from the prospectors who used to work there.
01:39:07Either way, you can easily get a guided tour in and around the area,
01:39:12even at night if you're brave enough to go.
01:39:16Mining has always been a part of human history.
01:39:19The first metals to have ever been mined were gold and copper.
01:39:23Some scientists have found evidence of copper pipes to be more than 5,000 years old.
01:39:28Copper was necessary for the next stage of human advancement
01:39:32as it helped us with technology for defending ourselves and trading.
01:39:36Ever heard of the term, luck of the Irish?
01:39:39That's actually a mining term during the gold and silver rushes in western America
01:39:44when most of the luck was going to the Irish miners who were finding everything.
01:39:49In 1863, the Vulture Mine in Arizona was thriving with gold,
01:39:54as if the name of the mine wasn't creepy enough.
01:39:57Up until 1946, it was producing millions of ores of gold.
01:40:02But in between, the mine closed for certain times.
01:40:05Many investigators decided to look around the mine to see if there was anything strange happening inside.
01:40:11According to them, they heard some noise coming from above when they were inside.
01:40:16The locals of the area later chased them out since they were trespassing.
01:40:21The Atlas Coal Mine opened and closed quickly between 1936 and 1979 in Alberta, Canada.
01:40:29The coal was mined to produce electricity and heating.
01:40:33The mine was known for having two shafts, both of which were connected by a tunnel at its base.
01:40:38The owners of the mines decided to build houses for their workers and their families
01:40:43since they knew they were creating many jobs.
01:40:46They eventually built a school, a hospital, and a library.
01:40:50But in 1979, the mine closed due to an accident, and ever since then, the mining town was abandoned.
01:40:58Many people have reported seeing some lights inside the buildings,
01:41:01despite them being empty as well as hearing weird noises from within the walls.
01:41:07Some remarkable things were discovered in mines, including the mighty Titan Boa.
01:41:12This giant serpent was slithering around roughly 58 million years ago
01:41:17and was more than 40 feet in length and weighed as much as a black rhino today.
01:41:23The coal miners in Colombia were digging out some coal when they discovered the fossil of this giant snake.
01:41:30Initially, they thought it was an anaconda, but it was much bigger than that.
01:41:35Imagine making that discovery!
01:41:38Now, imagine roaming through a mine and discovering antique European cars dating back to the 1930s.
01:41:46In 2016, a Belgian teacher was going through a French mine when he discovered the tunnels which led to the cars.
01:41:53It's believed that they were kept there as a secret stash, but no one claimed them back.
01:41:58Even though they're all rusty, their value certainly didn't drop.
01:42:03If you ever wanted to visit the world's largest freshwater dive resort,
01:42:08then we have the Bonne Terre in a lead mine in Missouri to thank for that.
01:42:13It was a fully functioning mine up until 1962 when it shut down.
01:42:17The company that was operating it pulled the plug including the water pumps.
01:42:22Slowly but surely, water began to rise and fill the mine,
01:42:26and by the 1970s, the three lowest levels were completely submerged.
01:42:31It then became known as the world's largest underground freshwater lake,
01:42:36and was named the Billion Gallon Lake.
01:42:39Most of the mining equipment is still underwater, and there are dozens of miles to discover.
01:42:44Count me in!
01:42:48The Avenue of the Baobabs is probably the most incredible and surreal avenue in the world.
01:42:54To see it, head to Madagascar.
01:42:57It's not the only giant thing you can find there.
01:43:00This land is also home to huge comet moths.
01:43:03Their wingspan is crazy, up to 8 inches.
01:43:06So you don't even need to look for iffy bottles with drink-me signs on it to significantly shrink in size.
01:43:13Huacuchina looks like an oasis in the middle of a desert.
01:43:17Oh wait, it actually is a desert, but unlike many others, it has a bunch of clubs and bars.
01:43:23A fun thing you can do there is sandboarding and even bodyboarding.
01:43:28Make sure you've got the glasses on and your mouth's tightly closed.
01:43:33The Tunnel of Love in Cleveland, Ukraine is completely covered with plants.
01:43:38Some couples believe that if they go through this 2.5-mile-long tunnel together, their dream might come true.
01:43:46Be careful what you wish for, though.
01:43:48There are trains going through this tunnel three times every day.
01:43:53The dark hedges in Northern Ireland seem a bit creepy because of the legend that surrounds this alley.
01:43:59The locals say the road is haunted by the ghost called the Grey Lady.
01:44:04By the way, guess what TV show was filmed here?
01:44:08In Northern Portugal, there's a wonderful house that looks like a prehistoric building, almost like a cave, but it's an actual cottage.
01:44:17It's called Casa do Penedo, which literally means boulder house, and it's a tiny museum now.
01:44:24From far away, it looks like a huge stone and a perfect dwelling for some mysterious creature.
01:44:30Another such abode is in Italy, somewhere in the middle of Reschenze.
01:44:35It's an artificial lake created as a result of flooding.
01:44:39This place is famous for its 14th-century church standing right in the water.
01:44:44So, the only time you can get there on foot is in winter, when and if the lake freezes over.
01:44:51One lake you can definitely take a stroll on is Baikal.
01:44:55No wonder, located in the heart of Siberia, it freezes over every winter.
01:45:00It's so large that it has 27 islands on it.
01:45:04It's also the deepest lake in the world, reaching almost 5,400 feet.
01:45:10Off to hot waters!
01:45:12Grand Prismatic Spring in Wyoming is the largest spring in the U.S. and the third-largest water source of this kind in the world.
01:45:20Don't you dare swim there!
01:45:22Not only is it boiling hot, you'll also have to face a fine for that.
01:45:27Enjoy it safely on the shore.
01:45:30Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France, is a top fairytale destination if you ever wanted to feel like a prince or princess.
01:45:38The magnificent castle is surrounded by water, but not all the time.
01:45:43It all depends on the moon.
01:45:45The highest tide can be seen 36 to 48 hours after a full moon.
01:45:50When I was there, I saw only a deserted area with a few puddles.
01:45:55A night sky with thousands of stars has those romantic vibes, but the literal sea of stars probably has even more.
01:46:04Welcome to the Maldives' Vathu Island.
01:46:07The beaches here glow blue at night thanks to the bioluminescent plankton in the water.
01:46:13You didn't think these were real stars, did you?
01:46:16If the stars don't interest you that much, you'd likely like the sky full of balloons.
01:46:22Cappadocia, a region in Turkey, is originally famous for incredible rock formations,
01:46:27but it also attracts visitors thanks to its wonderful hot-air balloon experience.
01:46:33For those who always wanted to walk on clouds whenever they peeped out of the window on a plane, good news, guys!
01:46:40You can do just that in Bolivia.
01:46:42It's not a literal cloud, but an extremely large salt tile.
01:46:47It's called Salar de Uyuni, and it mirrors the sky during the wet season, creating that illusion of infinity and walking on the sky.
01:46:56In Colombia, make sure to visit the Las Lajus Sanctuary.
01:47:01To get to the church itself, you'll need to cross a bridge that seems to be hung right in the air,
01:47:06and there's some fast-flowing water underneath you.
01:47:11Well, we're back in France.
01:47:13It's Colmar, Alsace region, and just look at these houses!
01:47:17Colorful facades made of timber, canals all adorned with flowers, and cobblestone streets.
01:47:25Germany is full of cities with these cozy gingerbread houses, and Rothenburg-Abde-Taber is not an exception.
01:47:32It's an almost fully-preserved medieval town with dozens of multicolored facades and authentic taverns.
01:47:39It looks especially magical in winter, with snow-dusted roofs and awesome holiday markets.
01:47:46In Iceland, many houses have grass roofs.
01:47:50Such dwellings are called turf houses, and grass on top of them has multiple functions.
01:47:55It not only decorates, but also protects houses from heavy rains.
01:47:59The grass grows in the foundation made of lava rock and needs regular trimming.
01:48:05In Costa Rica, on the islands of Isla de Caño, there's an assortment of about 300 circular objects of different sizes.
01:48:14Locals call them las bolas, which is simply the balls in English.
01:48:19These stones have an almost perfectly round shape.
01:48:22Some of them are huge, weighing up to 16 tons each.
01:48:26They're also made of different materials – gabbro, limestone, and sandstone.
01:48:31They're considered to have been put in lines in front of the chiefs' houses.
01:48:35Nobody knows for sure where those balls came from, but some myths claim they originated from Atlantis.
01:48:43A place called Angel Fall speaks for itself.
01:48:46It does look idyllic.
01:48:47It's the world's tallest uninterrupted waterfall, many times taller than Niagara Falls.
01:48:53The waterfall's in Cascades, and much of it evaporates on its way down, which creates an illusion of those beautiful clouds.
01:49:02If you're into dazzling shine, try visiting the Grand Crystal Cave in Mexico.
01:49:08You can only do so under professional supervision, but it's definitely worth it.
01:49:14Chances are, you've never seen a crystal twice your body size!
01:49:19In Morocco, there's a town called Chefchaouen in which the prevalent color is sky blue.
01:49:25Not azure, not cornflower blue, and not turquoise.
01:49:29Most dwellings there are painted the most beautiful shade of blue you've ever seen.
01:49:34The place is not easily accessible.
01:49:36It's located in the Rif Mountains.
01:49:40One more sky blue place is Santorini, which is probably a bit more easily accessible.
01:49:45The dwellings are painted white, but almost all the roofs are of a vibrant blue shade.
01:49:51The white paint is to keep the heat away and make sure you've got the most Instagrammable location.
01:49:58In Slovenia, don't forget to visit one of the world's most spectacular spots – Lake Bled.
01:50:04The color is truly aquamarine.
01:50:07I hope it's not photoshopped.
01:50:09Right in the middle of the lake, there's a cliff which is actually a small island.
01:50:13There's a castle and a couple of other dwellings too.
01:50:17To sweeten the trip even more, try a piece of Bled cream cake baked with a secret recipe.
01:50:24When you first see a photo of Moraine Lake in Canada,
01:50:27you'll probably believe it's either photoshopped or painted by a professional artist.
01:50:32But this place is real, combining a myriad of blue shades that feel so idyllic,
01:50:37you don't want to ever leave here.
01:50:41Bagan, the mysterious land located in Myanmar,
01:50:44has all the ingredients to be a truly out-of-the-fairytale spot.
01:50:49You can enjoy all the exotic vegetation, misty mountain landscape,
01:50:53and numerous temples riding a bike, or you can see it from a hot air balloon.
01:50:59The Philippines have a bunch of things to see,
01:51:02but there's definitely something special about local beaches.
01:51:06If you ever go there, the hidden beach in the El Nido itinerary is the perfect place to enjoy some solitude.
01:51:13The beach is securely protected from boats and unwanted weather conditions by limestone coves.
01:51:20In the Italian region of Liguria, there's dozens of precious beaches you'll never forget.
01:51:26Bay of Poets in Porto Venere is one of them.
01:51:30The beach is located right on the cliff, and there's also underwater caves you can swim into.
01:51:35It's called Bay of Poets because the legend says Byron got inspired there,
01:51:40swimming across the bay in search of his muse, which he eventually found.
01:51:46The area Cinque Terre is in Liguria too, and is really close,
01:51:51so if you always wanted to see those Italian cliffs and see wallpaper in real life, head there.
01:51:57The legend has it that seamen would paint their houses bright colors to find the way home easier.
01:52:04The Isle of Skye, Scotland, could be a perfect decoration for some historical TV show about proud knights and their maidens.
01:52:12There are also probably some fairies in the fairy pools in Fairy Glen.
01:52:17The must-see here is the Old Man of Storr, a hill that combines rocky and steep sides.
01:52:23There are no legends or anything, but it's one of the most inspiring and photographed areas on our planet.
01:52:30At first sight, if you take a look at it from the land, it'll seem just a stone bridge.
01:52:36But its main secret is to look at it from the water.
01:52:39The bridge reflection forms a perfect circle that looks like some sort of a portal to a hidden underwater world.
01:52:46It's located in Saxony, and is just a short drive from Berlin or Dresden.
01:52:53Now imagine the scene. You arrive at the airport in Hawaii a bit earlier and decide to chill in the waiting area.
01:53:01Suddenly, you notice an anxious blonde lady in a white dress standing at a gate.
01:53:06She's looking out the window on the runway, waiting for someone's arrival.
01:53:11You reach into your bag for some chocolate to comfort her.
01:53:15But it's too late. She vanished into thin air.
01:53:21Congratulations! You just met the Lady in Waiting, a resident phantom of the Honolulu International Airport.
01:53:29Like any phantom, she has a grim backstory.
01:53:32The lady once fell in love with a man, and he promised to marry her.
01:53:36But then the happy groom flew abroad and never returned to his bride.
01:53:42His betrayal broke her heart, and she took her own life.
01:53:46But her phantom is still attached to the airport, and she waits for her man to return just like the famous Japanese dog Hachiko waited for its master.
01:53:56Over the years, the local police have collected numerous complaints about the lady phantom wandering around the gates and other restricted areas of the airport.
01:54:06Also, this entity likes to hang out in public bathrooms, just like Moaning Myrtle from the iconic fantasy novel.
01:54:14Some airport employees reported seeing paper dolls unfolding on their own while cleaning empty bathrooms in the middle of the night.
01:54:22In some cases, toilet seats slam shut and toilets flush by themselves.
01:54:28However, it's unlikely to surprise anyone since many public bathrooms have automatic flushing.
01:54:35Unfortunately, this urban legend doesn't clarify the way to release the heartbroken phantom.
01:54:42But at least this story is a good reminder to think twice before you make any promises.
01:54:48And speaking of spooky ladies in white, the Kempegowda International Airport in India also has one.
01:54:55A pilot once noticed a weird woman in a white sari on the runway.
01:54:59He called the airport workers asking to help her, but she disappeared by the time the staff arrived at the spot.
01:55:07Numerous witnesses have seen the same phantom in other parts of the airport.
01:55:12The lady haunted people in the cargo department, on escalators, and even in the parking lot.
01:55:20According to the media, nobody knows her background or the reason why she's here.
01:55:26Maybe her luggage was lost and she's just trying to get it back.
01:55:32Today, Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok is one of the busiest airports in the world.
01:55:38But it doesn't stop this transport hub from also holding the title of the most haunted place in Thailand.
01:55:44Although imagination tends to draw something old and dusty when we hear the word haunted, Suvarnabhumi is relatively new.
01:55:52It started operating in 2006, but it turned out that the land under the airport used to be an ancient burial site.
01:56:01Work crews had to drain a marshland called Cobra Swamp to prepare the land plot for building.
01:56:07And mysterious events began to occur from the very first days of work.
01:56:12Wailing, creepy screams, and even classic music came out of nowhere.
01:56:16Some builders refused to continue construction because they were too scared of evil forces.
01:56:22The locals believed that they had angered the entities who were sleeping beneath the new airport.
01:56:28That's why 99 Thai monks were invited to perform a ritual.
01:56:33Together, they chanted for 9 weeks to clear all the bad vibes.
01:56:37The ceremony was almost finished, but suddenly a random man interrupted the monks and claimed to be possessed by one of the local entities.
01:56:46His message was pretty clear.
01:56:48You should build a proper spirit house to guarantee the smooth operation of the airport.
01:56:53Having said that, he fainted. Later, the guy woke up feeling normal and conscious.
01:57:00Well, the airport authorities decided to fulfill the mysterious request.
01:57:04Spirit houses are part of Thai traditional beliefs.
01:57:08Landowners build nice tiny shrines to establish friendships with invisible entities who might inhabit their plots of land.
01:57:16So, if you ever find yourself at the Bangkok airport, don't forget to check out this artifact,
01:57:22as well as the Churning of the Ocean, the remarkable sculptures that depict the ancient Hindu myth.
01:57:28The story is basically about light and dark deities working together to get Amrita, the beverage of immortality.
01:57:36Now, here's another reason why you should think twice before building a transport hub on questionable land.
01:57:43Welcome to Denver International Airport, reportedly one of the most famous haunted airports in the world.
01:57:50It stands on a special isolated plot of land that was considered sacred by its former residents, according to the media.
01:57:58People reported multiple problems and strange incidents going on at the airport from the very beginning of construction.
01:58:05Today, this place attracts numerous mystery hunters, and the number of urban legends around the airport multiplies.
01:58:12Some investigate the hidden meaning behind the local murals and gargoyles.
01:58:18Others believe that the giant cobalt-colored horse statue in front of the airport is haunted.
01:58:25That's because the sculpture, known as Blucifer, took the life of its creator, Luis Jimenez.
01:58:32In 2006, a piece came loose and hit the sculptor while he was finishing his work.
01:58:37The airport's enormous layout and remote location inspire some people to speculate that there's a secret bunker under it.
01:58:46In fact, it's bigger than some real cities like San Francisco, for example.
01:58:52But the spokesman of the airport debunked that myth, saying that this transport hub must support at least 50 million travelers a year, and thus it needs to be huge.
01:59:03Our next destination may inspire you to revisit the Langoliers, created by the legendary horror writer Stephen King.
01:59:12Although the thriller took place at King's hometown airport in Bangor, Maine, we'll be talking about the historic Chandler Airport, located in Fresno, California.
01:59:22This place has many abnormal stories to tell, including reports of people going through the old terminal wall.
01:59:30Some passengers heard disembodied voices in the airport restaurant.
01:59:35The kitchen staff once reported hearing a suspicious noise while cleaning up.
01:59:40They went to see what was going on and witnessed a plate moving across the counter and then falling onto the floor.
01:59:47Perhaps the invisible customer was just upset by overly high food prices. Hey, it could happen.
01:59:53Just like Honolulu Airport, Chandler has a resident phantom.
01:59:58It's an old man in the control tower. Thankfully, this guy doesn't bother anybody.
02:00:03According to witnesses, he's just staring at the field as if he's watching invisible aircraft take off and land.
02:00:10Meanwhile, the urban legend behind Savannah Hilton Head International Airport is spooky and romantic at the same time.
02:00:18It says the following, if you land right after sundown, you'll get the chance to see two phantoms along the north side of the runway.
02:00:27Now, the legend says these are the phantoms of Richard and Catherine Dotson, who used to live on the land underneath the airport.
02:00:35They don't bother the passengers or staff either. It seems like they're just greeting arriving people.
02:00:42Now, our list can't be complete without the UK's Manchester Airport.
02:00:48This busy place serves around 28 million passengers a year and also hosts a few spooky phantoms.
02:00:56Passengers and staff reported seeing creepy figures and weird phenomena, such as doors slamming on their own.
02:01:04The airport archives from the 1970s revealed that some staff refused to show up at Terminal 3 alone after dark because they were too scared.
02:01:14One night, the local workers saw a figure in a pilot's hat entering a toilet.
02:01:19No flights were scheduled to arrive or depart at that time, so he decided to follow the mysterious gentleman.
02:01:26But the bathroom was empty, and the motion-sensitive lights didn't show any reaction to the stranger.
02:01:33Some people reported meeting face-to-face with a phantom of a pilot in an old-school uniform.
02:01:39He usually wanders around Terminal 3 looking disoriented, but unfortunately, no one knows his backstory for sure.
02:01:47Another spooky resident of the airport is the Night Watchman, a phantom of a security guard from the 1960s.
02:01:55A former airport employee once met this gentleman and tried to talk to him, but the figure simply vanished into thin air, leaving the poor guy in shock.
02:02:06After that, he decided to leave his job for good. I can understand that.
02:02:12That's it for today, so hey, if you pacified your curiosity, then give the video a like and share it with your friends.
