00:00These fish tanks have strange designs, insanely expensive fish, and the most unusual features.
00:06There are some home aquariums and fish tanks that take things to a whole new level.
00:10So let's dive in to today's video on the top 15 most unusual home aquariums and fish tanks.
00:17Number 15. The Balancing Fish Bowl
00:20Since most fish bowls are made of glass, one of a fish owner's worst nightmares is for the entire thing to topple over and shatter into a million pieces.
00:29However, this balancing fish bowl seems to invite this possibility.
00:33This is because the bowl, which is created by Sheffield-based design studio Pesalt Design,
00:38is made so that the fish inside looks like they're going to tip the entire thing onto the floor.
00:44However, since these tanks are counterbalanced using a counterweight, they remain in place.
00:48And since they're hand-blown from premium glass, each tank has its own unique form and individual characteristics.
00:54However, given that they cost over $300 a pop, owning one of these cool tanks isn't cheap.
01:00Number 14. The Keg Tank
01:03Nothing quite completes a man cave like having a nice keg of beer on site.
01:07Yet it turns out that sometimes these kegs can have a fishy surprise.
01:11This is because on the Animal Planet show, Tanked, Brett and Wade created a unique beer keg tank that's like no other.
01:18Made using three real beer kegs, the team first had to drain and to ensure it didn't go to waste, drink all of the beer inside the kegs.
01:26They then took off all the different parts and welded it into a three-part piece.
01:30And after, surrounded a wooden barrel with acrylic, took out the barrel and created what was essentially a massive barrel-shaped tank on top.
01:38To top this off, they made it so that the kegs could be refilled with beer.
01:41And as a result, the keg tank is both flamboyant and functional.
01:47Number 13. Shaq's Egyptian Tank
01:51When celebrities get too much money, they often start to spend it on stupid things.
01:55And Shaq's Egyptian tank is no exception.
01:57You see, Shaq decided that he wanted to build an Egyptian-themed room in his mansion.
02:01And after he did, he wanted to install a fish tank right in the middle.
02:05Following that theme, Brett and Wade from the show, Tanked, created an 800-gallon triangle-shaped tank that had an Egyptian sphinx at each face,
02:13Egyptian hieroglyphs inside, and three large groupers swimming around inside.
02:17However, since the largest groupers can grow up to one meter in length, even this tank will one day be too small for it.
02:23And by many accounts, the tank is pretty tacky.
02:26However, despite the strange design choice, Shaq thought the fish were symbolic of his own size and strength and loved the theme.
02:33And given that he paid for it, the fact that he likes it is all that really matters.
02:38Number 12. Vending Machine Tank
02:41When people use a vending machine, they usually want to get a snack or a drink and go.
02:46But those with a little extra time on their hand can sit back, sip and snack, and enjoy the fish that were added as a unique feature to this one-of-a-kind vending machine.
02:54You see, on the surface, the tank is a fully functional vending machine, as it sells sodas to those who want them.
03:00However, its second use is as a fully customized aquarium, consisting of a seahorse tank and a tropical tank.
03:07There are a bunch of cool species variants of classics, such as the clownfish inside there.
03:12And overall, it's a pretty cool piece.
03:14In terms of the designers, it was built by Brett and Wade again from the hit show Tanked.
03:18And given their reputation, the craftsmanship is undoubtedly top of the line.
03:22So I think you'd agree it'd be a pretty cool addition to any home, work, or office space.
03:28Number 11. The Pool Aquarium
03:31If you've ever swam in an outdoor pool, you've probably imagined a scenario where real fish were swimming around with you.
03:38And while the chemicals necessary to keep a pool clean prevent most people from putting fish in there,
03:44the Danji brothers put this dream into action by converting their pool into a massive aquarium.
03:49With the help of the company SoCal Aquatics and Reef Creations,
03:52they first started by putting in a bunch of artificial reef inserts to make the pool look like a coral reef.
03:58Then they filled the pool with about 73,000 liters of saltwater,
04:01and in order to prep the tank, they heated it so that it remained at a constant temperature of between 77 and 80 degrees.
04:07They then added some seaweed, prepped the fish, and then started to release them in.
04:12The repertoire included yellow tangs, blue damsels, flame angelfish, porcupinefish,
04:16and even a spotted leopard moray eel, stingrays, and some sharks.
04:21They then proceeded to swim around inside of it,
04:24and while this is not exactly clear whether or not they kept this cool pool, it's certainly interesting.
04:30Number 10. Aquarium Beds
04:33While mob movies have given a rather insidious meaning to the phrase,
04:37the aquarium bed allows you to do so without losing your pulse.
04:41That's because it gives a quite literal take on the saying by essentially being a bed that's filled with beautiful fish.
04:47While there are a few companies that make them,
04:49one of the leaders in the aquarium bed field is the company Acrylic Tank Manufacturing.
04:54That's because they create a top-of-the-line bed frame that has a massive 650-gallon tank that arches over the pillows,
05:00which allows you to lay back watching the fish swim up and down.
05:03In order to be a bit more homey,
05:05the aquarium bed has lamplights that are inside of the tank,
05:08making reading a book or scrolling through your timeline a night of breeze.
05:11As a result, these beds are truly a cool addition to any home,
05:15and when you consider that they cost between $16,000 to $17,000 to create and install
05:20and must be maintained on a regular basis,
05:22you should probably think twice before splashing some loads of cash on this incredible aquarium.
05:28Number 9. The Dream Pond
05:32Oftentimes, homeowners decide to put fish into their ponds,
05:35creating outdoor aquariums that are to die for.
05:38However, of all the cool ponds out there,
05:40few are quite like the monstrosity built by Brett and Tricia on Tanked.
05:45Located at Brett's very own home,
05:47he wanted to build a pond that overtook the pond located at his friend's and business partner Wade's house,
05:52and I think that he certainly managed to pull it off.
05:55First and foremost, the pond has acrylic glass that's above ground,
05:58allowing you to see the koi fish from both a side view and a bird's eye view,
06:02giving the setup a little bit of character.
06:04He also put a massive fountain right in the center,
06:07which, for a bit of extra flair, has a flame lit up on top,
06:10while in the corner, a massive rock waterfall gives the area a bit more of a wow factor.
06:15However, the coolest feature on the Dream Pond are their two massive theater screens at each side of it.
06:20These allow you to have a theater-in-the-park type of setup in the backyard,
06:24and when you further consider that the entire pond is filled with super cool koi fish and turtles,
06:28it's not hard to see why this pond is truly elite.
06:35Many of you guys watching probably have a side hustle,
06:38yet I'm pretty confident that few of them are quite as strange or as profitable
06:42as the one run by the infamous Fishfluencer.
06:45Also known as Aquamalloc, he hails from Toronto, Canada,
06:50and he's best known for getting onto Vice to talk about his incredible at-home hustle of fish selling.
06:55You see, Malloc's primary job is an extra in movies,
06:58but when he's not on set, he's usually inside his room in his apartment that he's converted into an aquarium.
07:03Home to about 3,000 fish split between 55 and 60 tanks,
07:07the Fishfluencer apparently sells these fish to hobbyists,
07:11and according to him, it allows him to bring in about $60,000 in revenue
07:15and $45,000 in net profit every single year,
07:18with each tank bringing in about $5,000 before being retired.
07:21Beyond the money, this massive aquarium also has a mental health benefit,
07:25as he has noted that the aquarium helps him deal with the PTSD he experienced
07:29growing up in war-torn Sri Lanka,
07:31as the fish put him at ease and make him feel calm and relaxed.
07:34So, given that the aquarium provides both his mind and his bank account with substantial benefits,
07:39I'd say it's a pretty sweet gig.
07:417. The Moody Aquarium Sink
07:45While most people keep their fish in their living room or bedroom,
07:49the Moody Aquarium allows you to keep your fishy friends in the wettest part of your house.
07:53That's because this tank is essentially a replacement for your sink,
07:57as it takes aquariums to the next level by putting one inside of a sink bowl.
08:01The inside of the tank is completely customizable in terms of additions and fish species,
08:05and is shaped in such a way so that the sink can function as normal
08:10without the hotter cold faucet water affecting the fish.
08:13This is because the tank is built around the sink rather than being part of it,
08:17and it's got a powerhead to ensure proper lighting, water circulation, oxygenation,
08:21and filtration is achieved at all times.
08:23There's also two openings on either side of the sink basin,
08:26so you can clean the tank when needed.
08:28And to be extra careful, the basin was rigorously tested to ensure that the water inside the tank won't heat up,
08:34even when the sink is filled with hot water for prolonged periods of time.
08:38Also consider that the entire thing comes on top of a nice chrome-finished brass stand.
08:42It should come as no surprise that it costs thousands of dollars to purchase one of these incredible pieces.
08:50While phone booths are more or less obsolete,
08:53in 2016, the Twitter user Atmatuyasan found one being used in a creative way
08:58in a back alley on the streets of Yamato-Koriyama City in Japan.
09:02This is because the old payphone was filled with water and goldfish,
09:06a cool installation being owned by a small coffee shop known as K-Coffee.
09:09Once it hit Twitter, this fish tank went viral,
09:12and soon many visitors came to have a coffee and watch the fish.
09:15However, while it certainly got its 15 minutes of fame,
09:18in a strange turn of events, it had to be taken down due to copyright infringement.
09:22While many of the details are unclear,
09:24the story goes that after Japanese contemporary artist Nobuki Yamamoto saw the phone booth,
09:29he got quite upset because he thought that it looked almost identical to the phone booth tank he made in 1998.
09:35As such, Yamamoto agreed that he should be credited as the creator
09:38and received nearly $30,000 in damages,
09:41although the Kyoto University of Art, which was the organization behind its creation,
09:45claimed that they did not copy his work at all since they didn't know it even existed.
09:50Nevertheless, in order to prevent any further complications,
09:53they decided to tear the phone booth down,
09:55putting an end to this beautiful yet potentially plagiarized display.
09:595. John Marcus' 40,000 Liter Aquarium
10:05While there are plenty of massive aquariums out there,
10:07few are quite as large as the one owned by a certain John Marcus.
10:11Located in the garage of his Los Angeles home,
10:14Marcus has revamped the garage from use as car storage to fish storage,
10:18as inside he built an aquarium that's nearly 8 meters wide and nearly 4 meters deep,
10:23costing about $100,000 to build and has about $50,000 worth of fish inside.
10:28He's got a monthly maintenance bill of about $2,000
10:31and was constructed thanks to the help of a 45-ton tank that holds about 36 tons of water,
10:367 tons of gravel, 1 ton of driftwood, and once all is said and done, about 90 tons of total weight.
10:42While this may seem pretty crazy,
10:44the awesome plus side of all these costly materials is that the aquarium can now house lots of pretty cool species,
10:50which include colorful peacock bass, picuths, which are a gentler cousin of the piranha,
10:55and a rare fly river turtle.
10:57Although the absolute highlight of the tank are its two arapaimas,
11:00which are by some accounts the largest freshwater fish in the world.
11:03As such, while maintenance tasks such as regularly diving into the tank and cleaning it
11:08and feeding the fish fresh meat twice per day is costly,
11:11it's a rewarding experience for John Marcus and his family.
11:19While most aquariums have to have their water changed out regularly,
11:22ecosystem tanks are a bit different.
11:25This is because all these aquariums are essentially tanks where nothing has to be changed,
11:29rather, the plants inside do all of the cleaning and filtering,
11:32meaning that the owner of one of these tanks simply needs to trim the plants and top up the water,
11:37rather than do any serious maintenance.
11:39Now, in order to make one, you first start by putting down a gravel base
11:42and covering it in sand to act as a natural filter.
11:45Then, once this is in, you add as many plants as possible.
11:48This is important because plants are able to cycle nitrates,
11:51which is important because if these build up in the tank,
11:53they can stress out the fish and eventually kill them,
11:56and the aquarium needs to receive ample light
11:58and essentially be able to function as it would in the wild.
12:01As without the light and plant volume nitrates, it will not cycle quickly enough.
12:05Once the plants have grown in and the conditions are set, fish can be added in,
12:09and for good measure, many people use tropical saltwater fish,
12:12since these species tend to be more resistant to nitrates in case they do begin to build up a little bit.
12:17However, so long as you do your homework and everything is done right,
12:20it's possible to create a completely self-sufficient fish tank
12:23that requires very little maintenance work.
12:31While many people choose to keep a tank that exclusively houses fish,
12:34there are some that opt to own a paludarium.
12:37This is essentially an enclosure that incorporates both aquatic and terrestrial elements,
12:42amounting to a tank that has both fish and land animals inside.
12:46And while there are countless ways to create one of these fascinating exhibits,
12:50one of the most impressive out there was displayed at the Aquacella Festival in Dallas in 2019.
12:56Coming in at 6 feet in length, 5 feet in height, and 2 feet in depth,
12:59the tank is pretty massive, and while the actual aquarium part has about 600 liters of water,
13:04the land area is also very substantial.
13:07You see, in order to make the tank as similar to the wild as possible,
13:10it was made so that it essentially mirrors a South American ecosystem.
13:14As a result, it not only has native plants and additions such as rocks and logs
13:19to simulate the wild, but it also has a collection of species
13:22with the exact same temperature requirements so they can live in perfect harmony.
13:26And in the case of the $7,000 paludarium,
13:29this means that it contains a collection of neon tetras,
13:32Colombian tetras, and angelfish, which all swim in peace
13:35alongside a much larger caiman lizard,
13:38which is a semi-aquatic species that basks in the light,
13:41swims in the water, and eats a diet almost exclusively of snails.
13:45As a result, the entire paludarium works well,
13:48and I wouldn't be surprised if others decide to create a similar setup in the future.
13:522. The 200,000 Liter Aquarium
13:56It is near inconceivable that anyone other than a well-funded institute
14:00would be able to install a 50,000-gallon aquarium,
14:03yet that's exactly what happened between 1994 and 1997
14:07in the home of a certain fish fanatic.
14:10Being made in an L-shape, the long part of the L is 11 meters long,
14:14and the short part is 7 meters long, and the depth is just under 3 meters,
14:18and gives it a volume of a little over 50,000 gallons.
14:21For reference, this means this aquarium is about the size of the average two-bedroom apartment,
14:25and due to its size, it houses everything from a large variety of small cichlids,
14:29barbs, and curricans to much larger fish such as arapaimas.
14:33Now, in order to make this tank function well, it has a variety of pretty cool features.
14:37These include a viewing glass area so the tank can be viewed from above,
14:4211 skylights in the roof so light can come into the tank at different angles,
14:46and large amounts of lava rock and driftwood so the fish can hide
14:50and interact with their environment as they would in the wild.
14:54This is all regulated with the help of a 600-pound sand filter,
14:58the natural filtration of the lava rocks, and a collection of swimming pool drains.
15:02And while a total of about 10,000 gallons of water is funneled in and out every week
15:06in order to keep the water healthy, this aquarium is very unique.
15:10It isn't an easy thing to maintain.
15:131. The Fish Cellar
15:15When purchasing a home with a basement cellar, most will use it to store
15:19specialty food items such as wines, meats, or cheeses.
15:23However, Jack Heathcote of Nottingham in England had completely different intentions
15:27due to the fact that he opted to convert his large cellar into a fully-functioning aquarium.
15:31You see, Jack fell in love with fish after visiting the Blackpool Aquarium
15:35at 10 years old, and ever since, he's been on a mission to bring his hobby
15:39to new heights. Now, in order to create what has been dubbed the largest private aquarium
15:43in Britain, Heathcote had to rejig the cellar a bit, creating a hole
15:47in the roof of the basement so it could be accessed by the main floor,
15:51and changing one of the brick walls to a wall made of glass. He then had to calculate
15:55exactly how much water the tank could hold without exerting too much pressure,
15:59and after doing so, he paid £700 for the glass panels, £800 for the fiberglass
16:03lining, and after extra expenses, had the grand total of the cellar tank
16:07cut out to be about £5,000. The end result was a 3.7 x 3.7 x 2.1 metre aquarium
16:11that holds 18,200 litres of water,
16:15and inside houses two chainsaw doradids,
16:19three 60cm long pakas, some pangasius, a red-tailed hybrid catfish,
16:23two alligator gars, and eight enormous stingrays,
16:27plus two silver arowanas and two fly river turtles,
16:31all of which hail from locales as distant as the Amazon and Congo Basin.
16:35While these fish are certainly cool, it should come as little surprise that they're rather
16:39difficult to maintain, as Heathcote has to pump in and pump out an astounding
16:434,500 litres of water every few days to keep the fish healthy
16:47and clean, and has to feed the fish every two to three days with large amounts of food,
16:51and has to spend an inordinate amount of money paying for electricity
16:55in order to keep the tank at an optimal temperature. However, caring for these fish is
16:59truly his passion, and despite the time and money commitment, he happily uses
17:03a large part of his wages as a salsa teacher to run his amazing aquarium.
