00:00Hi everyone, I'm Emily Longoretta. And I'm Michael Schneider and welcome to Variety's Awards Circuit where we're looking at some of the key television categories in this year's
00:14primetime Emmy race. And this time we're looking at the performers in the drama field. Now kicking off with actress Sarah Snook of course won last year from Succession.
00:22So interestingly none of last year's nominees are even eligible. Their shows are either done or they're just not on the air from this past year. So that means that everyone who's a contender
00:32was not even nominated last year. It's nice to have some new faces. Yeah, or some returning faces that their shows have been off for a few years but they're back. But some of the front runners
00:42include Imelda Stalton from The Crown. You've got The Morning Show folks including of course Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon at the top of that. From Shogun you've got Anna
00:52Sawai. From The Curse you've got Emma Stone. The Gilded Age, Carrie Coon is among potential nominees. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Maya Erskine who we love from Pen15 back in the day is eligible.
01:04It's really such a good mix like I said of newcomers like Maya who hasn't really been in the conversation to these kind of legends and awards. I mean Carrie Coon of course is the example. Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon have been nominated before but this last season has really pushed them back into the conversation. So I think it's such a nice kind of new group that I'm really excited to see. And like I said it's wide open. A lot of these categories we pretty much know Jeremy Allen White is going to win actor in a comedy. But honestly for actress in a drama it could be anyone. That's exactly it and I think the same goes for actors.
01:33Again last year Kieran Culkin I think everyone was talking about Succession. In every drama category it was kind of like you don't need to talk about this. The question was going to be is it going to be Jeremy Strong. It was going to be one of them. But it was going to be someone from Succession. This year it could be any of these shows. Exactly. Of course we have The Crown coming back with Dominic West. And then we have the Shogun folk which is Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis who are both really incredible. Mr. and Mrs. Smith we have Donald Glover. We have Colin Farrell who is Colin Farrell from Sugar on Apple TV+.
02:03We have Walton Goggins from Fallout. Let's give some shout outs to Walton Goggins who you know we've loved him through the years and Justified and so many shows. I mean he's just a utility player and for him to do lead now in Fallout is killer. And that show is doing so well right now. Talk about a surprise if maybe Walton Goggins was able to sneak in. I would really love to see Walton Goggins sneak in. And the last person we have to mention is Nathan Fielder for The Curse. He also created the series with Benny Safdie. And what
02:33I mean it's Nathan Fielder. He's so great on screen. But he is the driest comedian out there. So in some ways it makes sense that he's finally in a drama field. But you know everything that he's done has been so wry and so so fascinating. And the fact that he's now a front runner in the drama space is incredible. What a combination of different kinds of actors and showing their showing their skills I think we have to I kind of want to just go back and also mention Colin Farrell again for Sugar. Oh yeah. Such a different story. If you haven't seen it I won't reveal the twist but there's a crazy twist
03:03halfway through that it turns into a series you never saw coming. So I think
03:06he is someone that people love Colin Farrell for many years. Yeah it's it's a
03:10fascinating category because you know the crown is probably a front-runner so
03:13Dominic West automatically he's front and center but then the Shogun folks now
03:17that Shogun is in the drama race you've got some really fresh faces that could
03:22potentially come in and steal it and and that could be really fun and interesting
03:26to see too. Alright let's turn our attention now to supporting actress.
03:29Again last year's winner is Jennifer Coolidge. Not eligible this year. Not
03:34only is there no White Lotus this year but there's no more character as well so
03:39RIP Jennifer Coolidge. She's fine. Jennifer Coolidge is fine. But for our supporting
03:44actress category Elizabeth Debicki who also already won the Globe for
03:49supporting actress and won SAG as well for best actress since they don't have a
03:54supporting category there. Definitely a front-runner if there is a front-runner
03:58in any of these categories. So she's there but we also have some of the
04:02Gilded Age folks including Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon who are a
04:06beloved. Morning Show. Morning Show is an embarrassment of riches especially on
04:11the supporting actress side. So you've got Greta Lee who is just killing it
04:16these days and everything she does including Past Lives that fantastic
04:20movie that she was in earlier this year. So don't count her out. Don't count
04:24Holland Taylor out who is also fantastic and everything she does.
04:27Nicole Pajeri came on this year and really killed it especially her one-on-one
04:31with Holland Taylor. I'd love to see them both tie for nominations. Maybe they
04:35could both be in there. And then Karen Pittman who is a utility player. She's in
04:39everything and she's fantastic in everything. So that's a lot of Morning
04:43Show folks. I don't think all of them can get nominated but they're all so great. I
04:47don't think so either but I do think Greta Lee probably because she was so
04:51powerful this season and that role was so powerful that she could I could
04:55guarantee that we will see her name on this list. One more show that we seem to be
04:58talking about a lot more this year is Slow Horses and Kristen Scott Thomas who
05:02of course is also a veteran actress could potentially be nominated as well.
05:06It would be really exciting to see. Let's move on to supporting actor. Of course last
05:09year's winner Matthew McFadden is not eligible but we do have some people that
05:13are coming back into the conversation. Billy Crudup who is a past winner for
05:17Morning Show. And who kills it who's still fantastic. But this year might have
05:21some competition in his own show because Jon Hamm is now in that category and he
05:25could be he could be one to beat. Yeah yeah and he plays a complicated
05:29billionaire and is great in this season. A lot of fun. And then of course we have
05:34the crowns Jonathan Price and Khalid Abdallah who are both great and Shogun's
05:39Tadanobu Asano who is really really great. Of course the Gilded Age Nathan
05:44Lane who I think his name just comes up in every category. Yeah Nathan Lane is like Jon
05:48Hamm. He does just show up everywhere and manages to oftentimes not only get
05:52nominated but win. And he was great of course in the Gilded Age. And then like
05:56you said Slow Horses is really really trying to be part of the conversation
06:00this year in a great way with Jack Loudon. Yeah yeah. And then one more name
06:04to mention on Loki. I was going to leave you this one. Who of course won the Oscar for
06:10Everything Everywhere All at Once and is continuing to do some great work. Of
06:14course we still love him from the Goonies. I think he's overall so
06:18beloved so that could really put him and maybe even Loki more into the
06:21conversation. So where do we end on this category? Oh man I think this is such a
06:25tough one. I want to say that Jon Hamm and Billy Crudup are gonna go head-to-head
06:29and I'm really excited about that. Yeah yeah. Now we're gonna have multiple
06:32nominations for a number of people in these categories. A lot of really great
06:36actors on the supporting and lead roles. I think we're gonna have to leave it
06:38there. Please join us again for another edition of Award Circuit. Thanks for
06:42watching.
