00:00Some leaders in Cebu are helping the province to become energy independent,
00:04especially since Visayas suffered from a problem with its power supply for the past few months.
00:10This is Jesse Atienza of PTV Cebu with the report.
00:15The members of the business sector in Metro Cebu joined forces for the Good Design Good Business Summit
00:22organized by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
00:25As part of the discussion, there was a new plan for the city of Cebu
00:30that will attract investors and add jobs.
00:34It's not only Cebu City that we have to consider, it's the whole metro area.
00:39Cebu is the biggest local government unit in Metro Cebu
00:43and it is strategically located in the center.
00:46So whatever we do in Cebu will affect the whole metro area.
00:50That's why we have to coordinate with the local government planners.
00:54That's what I'm doing now.
00:55But in order to achieve this, the possibility of a power shortage needs to be solved.
01:02Visayas and Cebu have experienced a problem with the power supply for the past few months,
01:09especially in the province of El Nino.
01:12Some are pushing for the province to become energy independent,
01:17especially since Cebu receives electricity from other parts of the country.
01:24Invite investments coming from the private sector,
01:26especially the power generation companies,
01:29not the private power generation companies who are already here.
01:33Maybe we just have to let them expand their capacity
01:36so that they can really supply to Cebu Island.
01:39Currently, Therma Visayas Inc. has 340 megawatts in Toledo
01:46and will add 150 megawatts.
01:49Currently, solar power plants are also being built in Calatrava, Negros Occidental,
01:55which is expected to help solve the power supply shortage.
01:59We're in the process of securing the bids from our potential suppliers.
02:05In parallel, we're working on the ECC and our SIS.
02:13Recently, the Philippine Statistics Authority recognized Central Visayas
02:18where Cebu is part of the fastest-growing economy in all 17 regions of the country
02:26with a 7.3% growth rate based on their studies.
02:30From PTV Cebu, Jesse Atienza for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
