Transcript
00:00In the last six months we've had 1,420 dog incidents across Australia, that's about 55 a week or 11 per day that our people are exposed to and we need to get that number down.
00:12About a third of the dog attacks to our people occur at the front door, so as a customer opens the door to receive the parcel the dog will often shoot through and attack.
00:24About 15% are between the front door and the front gate, so as we're either entering or leaving the property.
00:2915% are the traditional putting your hand over to put a letter in the letterbox and the dogs often will jump up, often unseen by our people and bite.
00:39And then about a third are on the street about half the time with an owner present and half the time with just roaming dogs or dogs from next door.
00:46A range of physical and psychological injuries, so physical lacerations, bites, scratches and also physical injuries from being knocked off their vehicles, their pushbikes, their motorbikes, their EDVs.
00:57In terms of psychological injuries some of our people sustain quite serious psychological injuries.
01:02I was talking to a postie recently who's just returned from a long term off work from a physical injury and even his son is really struggling with dogs now because of the injuries to his father.
01:13Well the main thing we tell a postie is if you see a dog, whether it's aggressive or not, don't enter the property if it's unrestrained.
01:18If there's signage on the property don't deliver if it says there's a dog on site.
01:23And if you see it in the street, turn around, don't keep delivering and report it to the council and management and we'll deal with it.
01:31Make sure your dog's secured, doesn't matter if it's a postie or anyone else visiting your property.
01:35Dogs are wired to protect their territory so keep it secured behind a fence or in a separate room if someone's coming to the front door.
01:42Signage on the front of the property to say don't enter if there is a dog present and if you're out on the street keep it in the lead.
