00:00Having second thoughts?
00:02No.
00:04I have no love for this place. Let's go.
00:06Welcome to Mojo Plays.
00:08And today we're looking at the most interesting times
00:10game developers decided to go backwards.
00:12The Office of Naval Intelligence
00:14believes deployment of a Spartan team
00:16is a gross misallocation of valuable
00:18resources. I disagree.
00:20Before we begin, we publish
00:22new content all week long.
00:24So, be sure to subscribe and ring the bell
00:26to get notified about our latest videos.
00:28The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword
00:38Technically, there are many Zelda games
00:40that act as prequels to others, but the one
00:42billed as the beginning of the entire series
00:44is Skyward Sword. It follows the original
00:46Link and Zelda yanked out of their peaceful
00:48skybound existence to explore the dangerous
00:50surface world.
00:52The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword
00:58The overall lore concerns a deity named Hylia
01:00who sent her citizens into the sky long
01:02ago following a battle with the Demon King.
01:04By the end, it explains the various versions
01:06of the hero and princesses, in addition
01:08to showing Hylians return to their original
01:10home. While some players took issue with
01:12motion controls and the companion, it still
01:14featured an engaging villain in some of the
01:16franchise's best dungeons.
01:18The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword
01:229. God of War Chains of Olympus
01:32God of War got some solid
01:34handheld spin-offs during the Greek era,
01:36namely the prequel Chains of Olympus.
01:38Prior to gaining vengeance against Ares, this
01:40story follows Kratos as he contends with Morpheus,
01:42God of Dreams. With Helios missing
01:44and the remaining gods under a sleeping spell,
01:46it falls to Kratos to stop Morpheus
01:48and his conspirator, Queen Persephone.
01:50It was interesting to see Kratos serving the
01:52gods instead of rebelling, and the expansion
01:54on his backstory and family was much appreciated.
02:04It also brought vicious gameplay
02:06the series was known for to a handheld format
02:08for the first time. An impressive feat!
02:10Although 2013's Ascension would later
02:12become first chronologically, Chains of Olympus
02:14remains the stronger title.
02:21Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island
02:31We know the Mario series never concerns
02:33itself with chronology, but Yoshi's Island
02:35is a clear-cut prequel, and a damn fine
02:37one at that. Following the Green Dino's
02:39debut in the fantastic Super Mario World,
02:41the follow-up sees Yoshi come to the aid
02:43of an infant Mario. After Luigi is
02:45kidnapped by Kamek, Yoshi and his kind
02:47carry the future star of the Mushroom Kingdom
02:49across dangerous lands.
02:57It took Mario's gameplay and put a spin
02:59on it with Yoshi's now famous flutter jump
03:01and egg abilities. It also came with a gorgeous
03:03picture book art style that Nintendo would
03:05build on for years to come. Honestly,
03:07the only thing we don't like is the noise Baby Mario
03:09makes when you get hit.
03:15Yakuza 0
03:20Huh?
03:25If a prequel is considered to be the reason
03:27for a franchise's rise in popularity,
03:29you know you've got something special.
03:31The Yakuza series wasn't well-known in the
03:33West until Zero showed us what we'd all been
03:35missing. Set 17 years before the
03:37original, it brought the series' signature
03:39style and humor to late 80s Japan.
03:41Yakuza 0
03:47Following series hero Kazuma,
03:49players became embroiled in a criminal
03:51fight over a piece of profitable real estate.
03:53It was great seeing the origins of the
03:55franchise, but it also acted as a
03:57fantastic jumping off point for newcomers.
03:59The developers wisely followed it up
04:01with a remake of the first game, and the popularity
04:03has been building ever since.
04:12Devil May Cry 3 Dante's Awakening
04:21Following a disappointing second entry,
04:23Capcom came back strong with Devil May Cry 3.
04:25As a prequel to the original game,
04:27it chronicles the relationship between Dante
04:29and his brother Vergil, one of the most fraught
04:31sibling dynamics in gaming history.
04:33Everything that the original was praised for, this one
04:35did better. The action was top-notch, featuring
04:37thrilling combat and some truly
04:39jaw-dropping boss fights.
04:47It was the type of game
04:49that felt so good to play, you never wanted to put it
04:51down. Even when it was beating the crap out of
04:53you, not only was it incredibly fun, but it
04:55returned the series to its prime.
05:03Deus Ex Human Revolution
05:09Deus Ex Human Revolution
05:13The Deus Ex series has some
05:15strong entries, so it says a lot that this prequel
05:17may be the best of the bunch. Human Revolution
05:19is set 25 years before the events
05:21of the first game. After security
05:23officer Adam Jensen is left for dead by a
05:25terrorist attack, the company he works for
05:27saves him by giving him cybernetic augmentations.
05:29From there, players unfold the
05:31mystery of the group, behind the attack with
05:33plenty of twists and turns along the way.
05:39We were supposed to have that war blocked down,
05:41but somebody got to the corpse before we did.
05:43Human Revolution hits all the traditional
05:45cyberpunk themes, including classism
05:47and the corruption of power. But it makes
05:49those tried-and-true beats unique, while
05:51also featuring fantastic stealth mechanics
05:53and a wonderful sense of freedom in how to
05:55progress.
06:03Halo Reach
06:05But we're a team. That lone wolf
06:07stuff stays behind. Clear?
06:09Got it, sir.
06:11The swan song of developer Bungie before it moved
06:13on to Disney, Halo Reach couldn't
06:15have been any better. Set before the events of
06:17the first game, it follows a group of super soldiers
06:19in charge of protecting Reach, one of
06:21humanity's last colonies in the war against
06:23the alien covenant. Although knowledge
06:25of previous games would tell you Reach won't
06:27have a happy ending, it's still thrilling to fight
06:29against the inevitable as new recruit Noble Six.
06:31Atomic excitement scrambled the signal.
06:33Ninety million now. Source?
06:35Airborne. Close. How close?
06:37That close!
06:39In fact, it lent the game a more somber
06:41tone than what came before it. It was also
06:43released during the franchise's undisputable peak,
06:45meaning gameplay and design was also
06:47first-rate.
06:55Metroid Prime
06:57Metroid Prime
07:03After being absent for eight years,
07:05Metroid finally made the jump to 3D
07:07with the brilliant Metroid Prime.
07:09However, it wasn't a sequel to Super Metroid,
07:11but instead took place in between the first and second
07:13games. It followed Samus as she
07:15attempted to thwart franchise villain Ridley
07:17from conducting dangerous experiments
07:19on a mysterious planet. The game has been praised
07:21ever since for how it beautifully brought 2D
07:23elements into a wider world.
07:28Getting lost on
07:30Talon 4 is still one of the most joyous experiences
07:32Nintendo has given us. It's no
07:34wonder that it got its own sequels, making
07:36the gap between the first two games ever larger.
07:44Metal Gear Solid 3
07:46Snake Eater
07:54Metal Gear Solid 3 is another prequel
07:56that just might be the strongest its series
07:58has to offer. Taking place in 1964,
08:0031 years before the original
08:02Metal Gear, it follows operative Naked
08:04Snake after he's betrayed by his mentor.
08:06With the threat of a Russian superweapon
08:08looming over them, players navigate the
08:10dense jungles of the Soviet Union to bring
08:12the betrayer and her allies to justice.
08:21The stealth gameplay is in top form,
08:23with every infiltration mission
08:25putting you on edge. The boss fights and
08:27villains are also some of the best the franchise
08:29has ever seen, and the story hooks you right from
08:31the start and never lets go.
08:39Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few
08:41honorable mentions. Castlevania 3
08:43Dracula's Curse. A fun expansion on series
08:45lore and gameplay.
08:47Resident Evil 0
08:53Resident Evil 0
08:55explored the terrifying outbreaks prior
08:57to the Spencer Mansion.
09:07Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7
09:09shined a light on the riveting
09:11events that led to the groundbreaking original.
09:18I was just getting warmed up!
09:20Red Dead Redemption 2
09:31The first Red Dead Redemption was a stellar
09:33piece of fiction, with a deep main character
09:35and the lore of adventure in the Old West.
09:37And yet the prequel surpasses it in every
09:39single category, focusing on the
09:41Vanderlind gang before its disbandment.
09:43It follows the group preparing for a final
09:45heist while dealing with rival gangs, and a
09:47possible informant among them.
09:51Arthur Morgan is a deeply flawed yet
09:53entirely compelling protagonist who is more
09:55than worthy spending dozens of hours with.
09:57As we'd find out, sinking so many hours
09:59into it was extremely easy.
10:01With such rich gameplay and so many ways to
10:03experience it, Red Dead Redemption 2's call
10:05is not one easily refused.
