00:00work new bilateral security agreement between the United States and Ukraine.
00:05Joe Biden and Volodymyr Zelensky put pen to paper Thursday on the sidelines of the G7 summit in
00:11Italy signing a security pact. The American president hoping to persuade allies that the
00:16U.S. commitment to Ukraine remains steadfast. Our goal is to strengthen Ukraine's credible
00:23defense and deterrence capabilities for the long term not by sending American troops to fight
00:29Ukraine but by providing weapons and ammunition. The Ukrainian president who also signed a
00:35security pact with Japan at the summit called the deal with the U.S. a path for Ukraine to
00:40join NATO. Set to last for 10 years the deal is similar to one the U.S. has with Israel
00:47committing Washington to train Ukrainian troops provide defense equipment and take part in joint
00:53exercises. This is an agreement on steps to guarantee sustainable peace and therefore it
01:01benefits everyone in the world because the Russian war against Ukraine is a real real global threat.
01:10But at the news conference responding to a reporter's question in Ukrainian
01:14Zelensky wondered out loud how long the unity would last. President Biden faces a tough
01:19reelection bid in November against Donald Trump who often praises Vladimir Putin and who could
01:25decide to pull the U.S. out of the deal. Trump has also suggested he would take the U.S. out of NATO.
01:32For his part even with a new pact on paper President Biden showed there are limits to
01:36American support saying he would not back Ukraine using long-range weapons to attack
01:41inside of Russia even though he recently endorsed the idea of Kiev using American
01:46weapons to strike just across the Russian border.
