00:49The fire originated at around 4.30 am on Wednesday morning
00:53in a kitchen located on one of the lower floors of the labor camp building.
00:58Witnesses say the flames spread rapidly, quickly engulfing the entire structure.
01:04Some workers attempted to escape by jumping from the building after noticing the fire,
01:09but several were killed in the fall.
01:12Others succumbed to the severe burn injuries and by inhaling the thick smoke.
01:17Those injured were rushed to the nearby hospitals in Adan, Jaber and Mubarak for treatment.
01:24Although the fire was reported to authorities at 6 am local time,
01:28but till then it had already caused catastrophic damage and loss of lives.
01:34Major General A. Rashid Hamad, a senior police official,
01:38stated that the building was severely overcrowded with migrant workers from the local commercial area.
01:43Dozens were rescued, but unfortunately,
01:46there were many deaths as a result of inhaling the smoke from the fire.
01:52The building housed approximately 195 laborers from India
01:57and it was owned by the NBTC Group, a company owned by an Indian businessman.
02:04In addition to the workers, some employees of the supermarket also resided there.
02:09Reports indicate several individuals may still be trapped inside the burned structure.
02:14India's external affairs minister S. Jai Shankar has expressed shock and sadness over the deadly incident.
02:20In a tweet, he stated that he is deeply shocked by the news of the fire in Kuwait city.
02:26There are reportedly 40 deaths and 50 have been hospitalized.
02:30The Indian ambassador to Kuwait has already visited the camp.
02:34Jai Shankar, on behalf of India, offered his deepest condolences
02:39to the grieving families who lost their loved ones.
02:42The Kuwait's Deputy PM Fahad Yusuf Al Sabah also visited the fire scene
02:47and has ordered a formal investigation into the incident.
