00:00Two Singaporean men appeared before Magistrate R. Salini at a Johor Bahru magistrate's court,

00:08facing charges related to the distribution of 58.6 kilograms of MDMA in Iskandar Puteri.

00:1649-year-old Tan Xiaowei and 36-year-old A. Chungkiat only nodded in acknowledgement after

00:22the charges were read to them in Mandarin on Wednesday.

00:25Tan faced additional charges of distribution and possession, totaling four and two respectively,

00:31while E was charged with one count each for distribution and possession.

00:36However, neither of the accused entered a plea.

00:40The charges under Section 39B1A of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for trafficking carry the death

00:47penalty or life imprisonment with no fewer than 15 strokes of the cane upon conviction.

00:53Similarly, possession charges under Section 12.2 of the same Act could lead to a jail

00:59term of up to five years or a maximum fine of 100,000 ringgit, or both if found guilty.

01:06Given the gravity of the charges, no bail was offered, as trafficking charges are non-bailable.

01:12The court set August 14 for the next mention pending submission of the chemist's report.

01:18In a related development, on June 1, the police announced the dismantling of an international

01:23drug syndicate, with the arrest of 12 foreigners and two locals.

01:27The raids led to the seizure of 198.5 kilograms of drugs worth 11.6 million ringgit.

01:35Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, NCID, Director-Commissioner Datuk Kau Kok Chin,

01:41said among those arrested was the syndicate's mastermind, a 49-year-old foreign man.

01:47The syndicate, involving 14 individuals aged between 22 and 52, including two local men

01:53and six foreign men and women each, is suspected of processing and distributing various drugs

01:59and raw chemicals for drug processing.
