00:00 "The authorities must cease the evictions and destruction of Bajau Lawut homes immediately,"
00:08 says the Center for Human Rights Research and Advocacy.
00:11 Sentra condemned the evictions and destruction of homes belonging to more than 500 Bajau
00:16 Lawut in Sabah, calling it an "egregious violation of human rights" which necessitated
00:21 an urgent re-evaluation of Malaysia's enforcement practices.
00:25 It added that the burning and demolishing of homes exacerbate the Bajau Lawut's vulnerabilities
00:30 and subject them to "cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment."
00:34 Sentra said the actions against the Bajau Lawut starkly contrast with Malaysia's position
00:38 as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
00:42 The NGO went on to say that the forced evictions contravened multiple international human rights
00:46 treaties to which Malaysia is a signatory.
00:49 It also called for the government to create pathways for the Bajau Lawut and other stateless
00:53 communities to obtain legal status, which involves developing a comprehensive legal
00:58 framework that provides clear procedures for their recognition and ensures their access
01:02 to rights and protections under the law.
