00:00 Bringing Richard Johnson from London, a lecturer in US politics at Queen Mary University.
00:04 Hello to you, Richard. What sort of things does each leader want to get out of this visit?
00:10 Well, I think obviously the top item on the agenda will be the situation in Ukraine. And that was
00:18 clear from the speech that Biden gave that he is very consciously drawing a connection between
00:27 the struggle for freedom that occurred in the 1940s and the continuing commitment that both
00:32 the United States and France need to make today. And we have to remember, Joe Biden
00:36 was actually alive at the time of D-Day. Of course, he was very young. He was born in 1942,
00:42 so he doesn't have any memories of it. But his entire life has been shaped, in a sense, by that
00:48 kind of alliance and that commitment that was made during the Second World War and the construction
00:55 of the liberal international order that has been led by the United States in partnership with
01:00 countries like the United Kingdom and France and others. And Biden is a real believer in that.
01:06 And I think that he wants to use this visit to emphasize his continuing commitment to that order.
01:13 And Biden and Macron have had points of disagreement, but on the whole, I think it's
01:19 a relationship where they respect each other. And I think that they've got other points to look at,
01:26 the situation in Israel and Gaza, the discussion about U.S. protectionism. But really, I think
01:32 Ukraine is going to continue to be at the fore of their discussions today.
