00:00I'm Jay.
00:03Rancy joins us every day on C2C.
00:05Thank God for that.
00:07And Gabe, I got to tell you, if they offered this guy now, all these deals in the NBA are
00:14very similar.
00:15There are five year deals.
00:17And I think that if they truly want him, Danny Hurley, that Jeanne Buss and Rob Belanger
00:24frankly offer him 10 years and a boatload of money and total control of the Lakers to
00:30build what, frankly, Riley and Phil Jackson did there.
00:37And they've already said they're making him a long-term massive offer.
00:42And I believe that.
00:43And I also believe that he's wanted to do this in his life.
00:49He's wanted to go to the NBA.
00:51And he's conquered all at UConn, winning back to back.
00:54Now, some people say, oh, he's going to go for a third chip.
00:59And that would be, you know, Wood Territory, Krzyzewski, Patino.
01:03They all have multiples.
01:05But what does he really have to prove in Storrs, Connecticut?
01:08If someone offers you the world to run the Los Angeles Lakers, you're going to turn that
01:14down?
01:15I don't think so.
01:16And let me tell you something else.
01:17He's a coach.
01:18This guy's a great coach.
01:21J.J. Redick is a mouth and a player.
01:24That's what he is.
01:25He's never coached a day in his life.
01:26Not even a little kid, like little girls basketball league.
01:30He's never coached anything in his life.
01:33You know, there's a saying, Scott, just because you want something doesn't mean it's going
01:37to happen.
01:39And I don't disbelieve that the Los Angeles Lakers would like Hurley to be their coach.
01:46But if you're Hurley, why would you take this job?
01:50It's not a good job.
01:51Frank Vogel won a championship and they threw him under the bus.
01:56You know, Darwin Hamm was brought in after and he's thrown under the bus.
02:02LeBron is the coach of this team.
02:04And as far as Hurley is concerned, so you come in, you just said it.
02:09So you're going to take, let's say, a five-year offer.
02:12All right.
02:13Let's say they offer a five-year deal, seven-year deal and, you know, $15 million a year or
02:17something stupid, whatever it is.
02:19Make him the highest paid coach in the league.
02:21For what?
02:22So what, LeBron is going to be there for another year or two?
02:26So what are you getting?
02:27And then after, you got to rebuild with the Los Angeles Lakers?
02:31How is this some sort of like dream gig?
02:33It doesn't matter who you are.
02:35They'll throw you under the bus fast.
02:37Like it doesn't make sense from a basketball standpoint for Hurley.
02:41Like it really doesn't.
02:42Like I don't, and if Hurley comes, he's not winning a championship.
02:46John Wooden could freaking like coach this team.
02:49Who cares?
02:50LeBron James and AD run everything.
02:52They're old.
02:53They don't shoot threes.
02:54They're like the anti-modern NBA team and they don't have a lot of salary room.
03:01They don't have any young stars.
03:03Like and another thing is too, I look at Hurley, the guy's a flat out, he's a great coach,
03:08Scott.
03:09He's also a flat out bully, bro.
03:10Right?
03:11That doesn't work in the NBA.
03:13He's never coached in the NBA.
03:14He doesn't have any NBA credibility.
03:16What did you do?
03:17So what?
03:19Your father's a big legend and you yell at kids in college.
03:20Good for you.
03:21Did it work for Nick Saban?
03:23No.
03:24Did it work for Urban Meyer?
03:25No.
03:26So I'm not even like, Danny Hurley, really?
03:30And what?
03:31So Hurley just convinced all these kids to come and now he's going to put a knife on
03:33everyone's back as they're going for a three-peat here?
03:36It's my take, Scott.
03:38I say that Danny Hurley will not be the coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.
03:43It's a hot topic.
03:44Dude, the Lakers throw this stuff out there all the time too.
03:47Right?
03:48And who the hell's even running that team?
03:51Is it Kurt Rambis?
03:52Is it Gene?
03:53You know, Kurt Rambis, pretty much?
03:55I don't think Kurt Rambis is running anything.
03:59He's not even on the payroll, Scott.
04:00Yes, he is, bro.
04:01This is the biggest.
04:02But he's not running.
04:03He's not running the team.
04:05He's not running the team.
04:06Genie Boss.
04:07He's the number one consultant, Scott, of the LA Lakers.
04:10Not on the payroll.
04:12He's the number one consultant with Genie Boss.
04:16He leans on Genie.
04:17She leans.
04:18Dude.
04:19Anyone who follows the Lakers knows Kurt Rambis has the F in here of the office, Scott.
04:22It's not a secret.
04:24Now, there's a million.
04:25Rob Palenka gets blamed for things.
04:27Palenka is just there.
04:29He doesn't control anything.
04:30Right?
04:31He's like the fall guy all the time.
04:34But you know, and Genie Boss?
04:36Let's be real.
04:37I mean, dude, the Lakers, in name, Scott, yeah, it's a great job.
04:41It's the brand name.
04:42And a lot of people would love to have the job.
04:44But if you're Danny Hurley, why would you want it?
04:46Like, you look at Harbaugh, bro.
04:48It's the best job in the NBA.
04:51It's the biggest job in the NBA, and it's in Los Angeles.
04:55It's not the best job in the NBA.
04:56It's a big job.
04:57It's not the best job.
04:58Listen, you and I both live there, and you loved it.
05:02You still go back and hang out at Lemmy's Bar.
05:06Like who doesn't love Southern California?
05:07You know, I totally get that.
05:08No, I'll take the job.
05:09If someone offered you $20 million a year to do your show in Los Angeles, you would
05:14move there so fast your head would spin.
05:16Yeah, but Danny Hurley's already making a ton of money, and now he's going to get more
05:20money from them.
05:21He's not making that kind of money.
05:22He's not making that kind of money.
05:23He'll get more money from them now.
05:26I don't think it'll be him.
05:28He's already making more than the governor in Connecticut.
05:32It's a bad job, Scott.
05:33It's not a bad job.
05:35It's a great job.
05:36I would understand if they said, all right, listen, Hurley, we want you to coach the Oklahoma
05:41City Thunder.
05:42It'd be like, all right, you're telling me I got five under-25-year-old stars here?
05:50Like Harbaugh's got a five-year deal, bro.
05:52He's got Justin Herbert in his prime.
05:55Hurley's going to give everything up to go, and LeBron talks about retiring every two
05:59weeks after.
06:00And what, now I got to do a Brawny, James?
06:03Well, he is going to leave in a year, and that'll be that.
06:07If they give him long-term to bring in the players that he wants, to develop a program
06:13that he wants at the NBA level, there is no better job than the Los Angeles Lakers.
06:19He's the biggest name in coaching, bar none.
06:23And if Mazula can coach the Celtics when he was the waterboy, then don't tell me Dan Hurley
06:30can't coach the Lakers.
06:31And I'll agree with you about this.
06:33It's LeBron and AD's team.
06:35Well, pick your poison.
06:36So let me ask you, though, Scott.
06:37Pick your poison.
06:38Let me ask you.
06:39Neither one of them listen to the coach, but they don't tell him or Vogel or anybody what
06:46to do or tell him how to do it or think that they're running the team.
06:50They just don't listen to him.
06:51And I think that-
06:52So, but let me ask you, Scott.
06:53I think Hurley would know he'd have to put up with that for about one year, and then
06:56if Davis didn't want to deal with it after that, they'll get rid of him.
07:00And then start all over and be on a bottom feeder in a very Western, in a tough Western
07:04conference?
07:06Let me ask you something.
07:07Well, the Lakers aren't going to disintegrate.
07:08The Lakers aren't going away because of LeBron and Davis or anyone else.
07:1320 years from now, the Lakers will still be the biggest franchise in the NBA.
07:18And if I'm wrong, why did they set up shot there, ESPN and everyone else?
07:23And the Lakers are on TV more than any team in the world.
07:26And they're not even good.
07:27They don't win.
07:28They don't win.
07:29Like I said.
07:30Like I said.
07:31But there's still the Lakers.
07:32Yeah.
07:33And there's also the Dallas Cowboys.
07:35You know, there's still the Montreal Canadiens.
07:37And I'm not just, you know, yeah, it's a sexy job.
07:40It's all that.
07:41I get that.
07:42But the Dallas Cowboys are always on national television.
07:45The Montreal Canadiens aren't.
07:46No one cares about that.
07:49The Kansas City Chiefs win Super Bowls all the time.
07:51So who cares about being on TV all the time?
07:54So what, Scott?
07:55You really think Danny Hurley's like goal in life is to be on ESPN and be on TV and
07:59be in Hollywood?
08:00No, no.
08:01The guy's a winner.
08:03So let me ask you something.
08:04Well, he's already done all that.
08:05Why not at the next level?
08:07Why not the next level?
08:08If Danny Hurley takes over this job next year, what happens to the Lakers next year?
08:13The same damn thing.
08:14They make the playoffs and then they lose and then they get bounced out.
08:18They're not as good as everybody else.
08:20They need to retool the entire roster.
08:23They've hit a wall with what they're at right now.
08:25I would agree with that.
08:26It just is.
08:27Totally.
08:28But with him.
08:29Yeah.
08:30So.
08:31No, but with Frank Vogel, they won a championship a couple years ago.
08:33So it would be the same team with him as they will be with Hurley, bro.
08:35Frank Vogel, just so we're clear, is like having an ugly wife.
08:40Well, he won an NBA championship.
08:42He did.
08:43He got a ring and he still don't matter.
08:46So well, he got a ring because of LeBron James.
08:49And Kawhi Leonard, Kawhi Leonard is why Toronto got a ring.
08:53And the Lakers got Frank Vogel a ring because of LeBron James.
08:57Let's be clear.
08:58So what's the deal?
08:59So whoever coaches the Lakers, you don't get credit if you win, but it's your fault if
09:03you lose.
09:04Well, it's been that way for a long time, hasn't it?
09:07Well, that's that's just that's their reality.
09:10But that's their problem.
09:11But they didn't have that problem when Riley and Jackson were there.
09:14You're talking about Pat Riley.
09:17That's what they're looking for.
09:19They're looking for the next Riley and Jackson.
09:22And they think by going after what they're looking for.
09:24They do.
09:25Well, apparently they don't know what they're looking for in the sense that they just went
09:30and all day today we have heard that they are making him a gigantic offer and he admitted
09:35to his players today that they've made him a gigantic offer and he has to figure out
09:39what he wants to do.
09:40And I won't dispute you that he would possibly stay in stores.
09:44I think that's certainly an alternative.
09:47That's the easy alternative.
09:49He's got that job locked down for life.
09:52But the real challenge and you got to understand, like, I know his dad.
09:57I know his brother.
09:58I know him.
09:59And he is.
10:00Trust me.
10:01I've been friends with him.
10:02He's crazy.
10:03He is crazy.
10:05And he wants challenges that no one thinks that he can do.
10:10Back to back.
10:11They didn't think we could do it.
10:12We did that.
10:13And he knows he's got an empire.
10:14Now it's like, oh, you don't think I can fix the Lakers?
10:18He's crazy like his dad was.
10:20His dad's practices in high school at St. Anthony's were the hardest practices in the
10:25history of basketball at any level.
10:28So you think that's going to work in the NBA?
10:31That's going to work.
10:32I think that's what the Lakers need.
10:34I think that's what they need.
10:36LeBron James and AD need to be yelled at.
10:38Austin Reeves needs to be yelled at.
10:40No, what they need to do is get rid of them.
10:43That's what they need to do is get rid of them.
10:44Because all the talk about Austin Reeves being some kind of baller.
10:48He's a white dude that made a bunch of threes and everyone got all excited and gave him
10:53a hillbilly nickname and all the rest.
10:56What's that?
10:57Then why would Hurley want that then?
10:59They decide Austin Reeves do a long term deal.
11:02They're going to give Hurley all the power to revamp the entire thing over a long period.
11:07That's what their goal is.
11:09That's what their aim is.
11:10I won't dispute that it sounds crazy, but that's exactly what they're doing.
11:15To develop a program in the sense of what he did at UConn at the NBA level.
11:21It can be done.
11:23It can be done.
11:24It's never been done.
11:25Teams.
11:26Well, like they build teams to win championships and to win titles and to have status.
