Nasa kalahati pa lang ng taon pero umabot na sa mahigit 100 ang namatay dahil sa rabies. Sabi ng health department, sapat ang suplay ng bakuna pero ang problema ng San Lazaro Hospital -- tila naiipon sa kanila ang mga gustong magpaturok ng anti-rabies.

00:00It's only been half a year, but more than a hundred people have died from rabies.

00:08The health department said that the vaccine supply is enough,

00:12but the problem of San Lazaro Hospital is that they don't have enough people to vaccinate the anti-rabies.

00:20Maki Pulido is on the phone.

00:25As long as there's a line, people will get vaccinated at San Lazaro Hospital in Manila.

00:29Even from the previous 1,000 patients a day, it has now reached more than 3,000.

00:36Their patients don't need to reach this number because the local government should have animal bite centers.

00:43But they noticed that the supply of vaccines to LGUs is low.

00:47That's why many patients are being saved here.

00:50There's a trained doctor and nurse in the bite centers in LGUs

00:55who should be able to cater to our animal bite patients.

01:00But even if there are trained doctors or nurses,

01:04if there's no vaccine to be given to the patients, they are forced to come here.

01:09Melanie was evacuated to Manila from Quezon because it's only available in a private hospital there.

01:15That's why it's expensive.

01:19They can't afford it.

01:22I thought there are public hospitals like this.

01:27But there's none. It's all private.

01:30Mayra is from Manila, but she's still going to San Lazaro.

01:34I asked my friends at BHW if it's available at Earnshow.

01:40They said it's not available. They told me to go straight to San Lazaro Hospital.

01:44Dr. De Villa is worried that there are patients who don't get vaccinated against rabies

01:49because there's no vaccine available.

01:51If the patient is traveling from home to the local health center,

01:57and when they arrive at the health center, they will say that it's not available,

02:01the patient will not be able to avoid being dismayed and will just go home.

02:05This is dangerous, especially since the number of human rabies cases recorded by the DOH this year has increased.

02:11From 150 cases in 2023, it has increased to 169.

02:16Of those, 160 have died.

02:19According to experts, if a dog bites or a cat scratches,

02:23wash the wound well and immediately consult a doctor within 24 hours.

02:31Manila LGU said their supply of anti-rabies vaccine is sufficient.

02:35They just need to go to six health centers that have animal bite centers.

02:40If they go to other regular health centers,

02:43there really is no anti-rabies vaccine for humans.

02:49The Department of Health also said that there is no problem in the supply of vaccines at the national level.

02:54It's possible that we have a distribution problem of vaccines

02:57because at the national level, we don't have SCAR-CT, meaning nationwide.

03:01We are also collecting statements from DILG, League of Municipalities of the Philippines,

03:05and Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines

03:08regarding the supply of anti-rabies vaccine to other LGUs.

03:11Because of dog or cat bites,

03:14DOH is supporting the call of the Department of Agriculture

03:18to add P110 million to the budget to vaccinate 22 million dogs and cats.

03:25The short resolution is to provide the budget to the Department of Agriculture as they have requested,

03:31then they will choose the vaccine at the national level

03:34that will be given to our local governments.
