00:00 So one of the essence of spirituality is Vasudeva Kudumbakam, the world as one family.
00:10 But the present trends that we are seeing happening and the countries are evolving into
00:15 unilateralism and self-interest as you say power absorption and phenomena like racism,
00:21 terrorism and intolerance.
00:23 These things are perpetuated by technology.
00:26 So this is posing a big challenge in attaining this one world concept.
00:31 So my question is that what do you think is a way forward of attaining a spirituality
00:37 as a global consciousness phenomena?
00:40 No, no Vasudeva Kudumbakam is not the basic premise of spirituality.
00:50 That is not.
00:51 It's just that it's a popular kind of catchphrase.
00:55 That is not the fundamental thing.
00:59 Again global consciousness is another phrase in circulation these days.
01:06 But that again is not something deeply spiritual.
01:16 The first thing that spirituality brings to you is not that the entire world is a family
01:26 but that the entire world is false.
01:30 Not that the entire world is family but that the world, the entire world is false.
01:36 Not family but false.
01:37 There is a big difference there.
01:41 Now when you say the world, it is actually your world you are talking of.
01:51 The sages take great pains to help us understand this.
01:57 There is nothing called the objective world.
01:59 We all live in our personal universes and it is these personal universes that are false
02:07 and because we live in our personal worlds, therefore no two worlds are ever properly
02:16 at sync with each other, in sync with each other and hence there is a lot of strife.
02:24 I live in my mental globe, you live in yours and my globe is never going to conquer with
02:32 yours.
02:33 Why?
02:34 Because I have a personal center and you too have a personal center and the personal
02:39 center is false and cares just about its own false and imaginary welfare.
02:48 So it is not that the entire world is a family.
02:52 That is a very pedestrian kind of concept and phrase we have picked up because it suits
03:02 us.
03:03 If you go to Vedanta, if you go to Upanishads, the kind of declarations you find there are
03:13 far deeper, far richer, far more striking but we don't pick them up.
03:22 We don't pick them up because they don't suit us.
03:28 First of all we don't understand them.
03:30 And if ever accidentally we do get to understand, we find them scary.
03:36 We find them scary because they reveal to us the falseness of our concepts, our very
03:40 life itself.
03:41 So we don't touch them.
03:43 We pick up something very, very easy and comfortable like Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
03:54 The oneness of the globe will remain a mere pipe dream as long as the more fundamental
04:05 spiritual question is not answered.
04:09 The fundamental question is who am I?
04:13 And as you go into it, you discover that most of that which you consider as yourself is
04:21 a mere phantom.
04:27 Our past speaks from within us, borrowed concepts, our mouth spouts, environmental influences
04:42 get absorbed within and then start speaking as I.
04:54 And when you see that, then you say, "How can I insist on my desires, on my concepts,
05:06 on my beliefs, my opinions, my thoughts, how can I insist on any of these?"
05:11 And that's when the Vedantic process of neti neti begins.
05:16 You start dropping.
05:18 You say, "It's not worth it.
05:22 It's not worth it carrying the false into the future.
05:28 What's the point energetically plunging into something when I do not know who I am and
05:36 what that thing is?"
05:39 So there comes a pause and with that pause there is clarity and then in that clarity
05:46 there is renewed, fresh and life-giving action.
05:54 So you see, are we happy even with the little personal families that we have?
06:02 What happens in our families?
06:04 What happens in our houses?
06:05 Let's get real.
06:07 If we are not happily happy in a family of five, why do we want to extend the same unhappiness
06:14 to the entire globe by talking of stuff like Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam?
06:19 The man and the woman are all the time at each other's throat, breaking each other's
06:25 head.
06:26 You cannot have peace even in your kutumb of two.
06:31 Why do you want to have a global kutumb?
06:36 But it sounds so nice and then from high platforms and very respectable fora such things are
06:44 uttered and they are totally meaningless, mean nothing at all.
06:48 Why?
06:49 Because we have never had the time to really go into spirituality.
06:53 Advaita Vedanta is at the core of all religious streams.
06:59 We have never had the time to study Vedanta.
07:03 So the little exposure to spirituality that we have is by way of popular culture.
07:10 Somebody taught us some verse from Saint Kabir.
07:15 Somebody came to us and we accidentally heard something from the Ramcharitmanas.
07:24 Upanishads, obviously they are in Sanskrit.
07:27 So we not even accidentally got to hear them.
07:33 And that's where we stand you see.
07:36 In the name of spirituality all we do is pay lip service.
07:41 You go to university functions.
07:44 Before they start doing what they want to, they have something called the Saraswati Vandana
07:51 and lamp lighting and such stuff.
07:53 And whenever I am on such a stage, let me put it clearly, I cringe.
08:02 Do we even know what we are doing?
08:05 But we use Sanskrit and cultural motifs to just lend respectability to whatever we are
08:15 doing without understanding even 1% of what Vedanta is about.
08:24 I request that let's please initiate a course on Vedanta.
08:35 Let's have a compilation of the richest, the juiciest verses and at least some students
08:50 will benefit.
08:52 At least the faculty members will benefit.
08:55 So I have much to say.
09:01 I have much to say.
09:02 It is just that I am blocked by the context and the paucity of time.
09:08 Yes, I understand.
09:09 But I also have one thing.
09:11 Without we feeling oneness, how can we go and face the global challenges that we are
09:17 facing today?
09:18 But you do not know the one you are.
09:20 How will you feel oneness with the one that the other is?
09:25 So spirituality, what is the scope of spirituality in this case?
09:30 First of all, know the one you are.
09:32 Oneness with the other is a far-fetched thing.
09:35 I do not know who I am.
09:37 How will I find my brother?
09:38 Tell me, please.
09:40 You want to have universal brotherhood.
09:42 You do not know your own name.
09:43 How will you identify your brother?
09:46 It means like each individual has to search for themselves.
09:51 The moment you search for yourself, you find all that which keeps you divided and distinct
09:59 from the other.
10:01 You not only find that, but you also find that it is false.
10:05 And with that discovery, oneness is established on its own.
10:09 You do not have to search or strive for it.
10:13 Oneness is not an accomplishment in the outer direction.
10:16 Oneness is a discovery within.
10:19 You have to look into yourself.
10:20 You cannot remain deluded and torn within.
10:24 You cannot go to your neighbor's house and hug him and say, "Now the two of us are one."
10:29 That will be meaningless.
10:30 No?
10:30 [laughs]
