NDA aims to promote local dairy products as part of World Milk Day celebration

Transcript
00:00 Milk does the body good, but the country is way, way far from good in its production of this wholesome food item essential to good health.
00:08 A migrant worker's venture into goat milk production is not only turning out to be good business with vast growth potential,
00:15 but has opened the eyes of stakeholders who now seek government intervention and financial help to get this promising industry to a rolling start, as our Claizel Pardilia reports.
00:29 From being overseas Filipino workers, Luz Viminda has returned to the Philippines and is now successfully engaged in goat farming and selling fresh milk.
00:39 I met the National Dairy Authority. They gave us 20 heads of dairy animals from Australia.
00:46 We multiplied the amount and we were able to pay the NDA.
00:49 We multiplied it by 5 and now we have 125 cows. We get 3-4 liters of milk per day per goat.
00:58 In celebration of World Milk Day, the milk she obtains from her livestock was showcased at a dairy fair in Quezon City.
01:06 The National Dairy Authority aims to promote local dairy products and showcase a variety of items including flavored fresh milk, yogurt, ice cream, and other dairy products made from cow, goat, and carabao milk.
01:21 This product source from dedicated farmers and cooperatives across the country highlight the rich and diverse offers of the Philippine dairy industry.
01:31 We are joining in the efforts to strengthen our local milk production.
01:39 This will provide livelihood to our farmers.
01:44 This is important for all of us because it will provide us with good nutrition.
01:48 This is our challenge to the Department of Agriculture and the National Dairy Administration to increase our milk production.
01:55 The Philippines faces a significant challenge in meeting its milk demand with 99% of its supply coming or sourced from other countries.
02:04 The local production of milk stands at only 30,000 metric tons annually, a mere 1% of the country's total demand of 3.3 million metric tons.
02:15 In addition to small population of dairy animals such as cows, the effects of El Niño have also worsened the problem.
02:23 In our 7-liter calabao, we only produce 5 or 6 liters.
02:28 The damage is also caused by the forage and the silage and grass that we eat.
02:36 Because of the drought, the nutrition of the animals we feed has decreased.
02:43 The Department of Agriculture aims to increase production to 5% by 2025.
02:49 The NDA plans to import 5,000 to 8,000 cows with good genetics that can produce more liters of milk.
02:57 They will also use sex semen technology to select the gender of the animals.
03:02 We will choose the gender of the baby we want.
03:07 We hope to be able to give enough funds to increase the production of milk.
03:20 If we really want to increase our dairy, we will increase our stocks.
03:24 They will establish feed centers to improve the quality of feeds, set up laboratories to quickly detect diseases like foot and mouth disease and avian flu,
03:35 strengthen partnerships with companies to provide training in dairy farming.
03:40 The budget should be increased and we will definitely be able to achieve that 80 million by 2028 if not exceeded.
03:50 But we are confident with the budget now as well as our plans for the coming years.
03:56 I feel that we have a good chance of attaining the same.
04:01 The NDA is lobbying for a 2.5 billion peso budget for 2025.
04:07 Kalei salpar diliya for the new and better Philippines.
