00:00 The Royal Family quietly removes Prince Harry's Meghan Markle romance statement from its website.
00:06 Over four years after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the duties of the British Royal
00:10 Family, the Prince's 2016 statement confirming their relationship and also defending his
00:15 then-girlfriend from racist abuse has been pulled.
00:19 Multiple outlets report that while the statement can be found through the Royal Domain search
00:23 engine, the link to actually bring a user to the statement itself is broken.
00:28 E! News has reached out to reps for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as well as the Palace
00:32 for comment regarding the matter.
00:34 At the time when rumblings of a romance between Harry and Meghan led to a wave of negative
00:38 press against the suit star, the Kensington Communications Secretary who represented Harry
00:43 as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton shared a rare impassioned statement in her
00:48 defense, saying, "Meghan Markle has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment.
00:53 Some of this has been very public.
00:55 The smear on the front page of a national newspaper, the racial undertones of comment
00:59 pieces and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments."
01:05 Of course, in the years since confirming their relationship, Harry and Meghan, who share
01:08 kids Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 2, tied the knot and ultimately stepped back as senior members
01:13 of the Royal Family.
01:15 But looking back on the statement, Harry has expressed how important it was for him to
01:19 defend the woman he loved.
01:21 He recalled in his 2023 memoir, Spare, "We needed a statement out there.
01:25 Within a day we had a draft.
01:27 Strong, precise, angry, honest."
01:29 And while the 39-year-old lamented that the statement did not stop the onslaught of harassment
01:34 on Meghan, it also had other repercussions.
01:37 In fact, Harry claimed in his memoir that the bulletin made his brother William and
01:41 his father King Charles III, quote, "furious."
01:44 Why?
01:45 Harry explained in the book, because they'd never put out a statement for their girlfriends
01:49 or wives when they were being harassed.
01:51 "The Royal Family" is available in bookstores, on Amazon, and on iTunes.
