Newcastle United: Newcastle miss out on Europe
Transcript
00:00 Hello and welcome back to the Magpies Nest Newcastle United podcast. Once again I'm joined
00:05 by my co-host journalist friend Jordan Crone and Jordan how are you on this
00:10 cloudy Wednesday afternoon? I'm trying to think of interesting things here there's not a lot going on
00:17 we can talk about so you know. Yeah the sun's gone after I've made a brief return for a little bit
00:25 it's been all doom and gloom in terms of the weather and possibly Newcastle United season
00:31 after what happened at the weekend which I'm sure we're gonna we're gonna come on to. Yes yes we are
00:37 of course last week on the podcast it was all we seemed relatively merry we were I mean we weren't
00:43 we were trying not to get too far ahead of ourselves because it wasn't confirmed that
00:47 Newcastle would be in Europe and then of course the one team you think you can count on in Manchester
00:51 City even they let you down so Newcastle will not be playing in Europe next season because
00:57 Manchester United won the FA Cup they'll be in the Europa League Chelsea therefore in the conference
01:01 so Jordan it's it's a disappointment I think it's fair to say. How do Newcastle process this of
01:11 course I think the whole aim this season well maybe not the whole season well actually yes the
01:15 whole season but certainly from sort of March onwards was to get in Europe of any form and they
01:20 haven't done that there's a lot of sort of fear on social media that this might affect players
01:28 staying or players coming in but given it was only the conference league is that the case and just as
01:34 a whole how much will it affect the club not being in Europe for a season in your opinion?
01:39 Yeah I don't think you can sugarcoat it I think conference league or not I think it I do think
01:44 it's a massive blow to Newcastle United's ambitions if you like because to go from a top four finish
01:51 to getting Champions League football to then 12 months later being in no Europe whatever way you
01:57 look at it it is a it is a blow and you know that that will that word failure has been banned about
02:03 and I think that's a really really strong word but I think that's probably the harsh reality of
02:07 what's happened I do think it's a failure that Newcastle have helped me not qualify for Europe
02:11 now they're probably unlucky in a sense because if you ask at the start of the season what seventh
02:16 place going to get you then you think it's going to guarantee Europe at one stage it even looked
02:20 like eight teams are going to be in Europe next season because of obviously the coefficient rules
02:24 with UEFA so in that in that sense you think Newcastle the seventh place finish will guarantee
02:29 Europe and I think that's I think it's only happened once in the last 10 years where a team
02:33 who's finished seventh hasn't actually got any Europe and I think that was because Orson won
02:37 the FA Cup so in that sense we're unlucky but the reality is that not in European football and I do
02:45 think that's a I do think again I do think it's a failure what knock-on effect does it does it have
02:52 well it certainly changes the feeling around the club and there's some I think Newcastle looking
02:56 forward to Conference League football there'll be a bit of a buzz where it does feel like that result
03:02 at the weekend has kicked them a little bit but I don't I don't think it'll have an effect on
03:08 players futures to be honest I think players like Bruno and Isaka of course the two big names that
03:14 we talk about they deserve to be playing European football and I think naturally in their careers
03:20 they'll be disappointed not to be playing European football next season but I hope Newcastle or Bruno
03:26 for the next four weeks because his release clause hold the key to their futures so if no one activates
03:31 Bruno's release clause in the next four weeks Newcastle are in total control of whatever price
03:35 tag we have on demand and it's up to them if they want him to stay which I'm pretty sure they do
03:41 and of course you've got Isaka as well they're in control of his future and
03:45 them two players I mentioned there they've got price tags that are really perhaps unaffordable
03:51 for a lot of teams so as much as those players might be disappointed and probably will be
03:56 disappointed that they haven't got European football next season Newcastle hold the key and I just don't
04:01 see those players leaving so yeah it's a blow because look everyone would have looked
04:08 forward to European football I think it's a sign of a successful progressive football club if you
04:13 get in a European football every season and we haven't done that but we can't sit here and dwell
04:19 on it Eddie Howe can't sit here and dwell on it the players can't either the ownership can't they've got
04:24 to push ahead with plans this summer it's a big summer ahead and they've got to focus on getting
04:29 back in Europe next season I do think it probably puts the pressure on a little bit next year
04:34 because Eddie Howe probably the victim of his own success last time he had a full season without
04:39 European football they went and finished fourth I wouldn't criticize people for thinking that's
04:44 a realistic game again next season I think either top four or a trophy has to be the aim and if
04:51 they do that next season you can maybe look back on the season as a blessing in disguise
04:55 you're like because there's a bump in the road but there's so many lessons to be learned
04:59 injuries etc you know there's loads of lessons that we'd sit here and rattle off lessons all day
05:05 as long as they learn from those lessons they could come back much stronger next season
