08:01 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
08:13 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
08:15 Hey, Michelle.
08:27 It's about the school's annual singing contest.
08:29 Oh, yeah.
08:30 Who you bet's going to win this time?
08:32 Who else but you, right?
08:33 Unless another better singer comes along in our school.
08:36 Have you heard anyone better than me lately, Brian?
08:38 Whatever.
08:39 Let's go.
08:40 OK, what do I--
08:41 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:43 [APPLAUSE]
09:10 Your gifts?
09:12 Oh, why?
09:13 What's wrong?
09:14 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
09:15 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
09:17 I've heard you sing 1,000 times.

09:32 You're good.
09:33 Go.
09:34 [APPLAUSE]
09:37 [MUSIC PLAYING]
09:39 I think she's praying.
09:46 Well, she's going to need more than prayer to beat me,
09:48 don't you think?
09:50 Hey, are you going to sing or are you going to pray?
09:52 Shut up.
09:53 The each of us sung, stupid.
09:56 [MUSIC PLAYING]
09:58 [MUSIC - "THINKING OF YOU"]
10:00 Thinking of you here and now.
10:14 Can't forget the love I've found.
10:19 Happy faces, living pages, almost anywhere.
10:26 Don't know how this love existed.
10:37 They say it's magic, I can't tell.
10:43 Bliss and gladness, faith and whispers,
10:48 scattered everywhere.
10:50 In your eyes I found my all.
11:01 You were sent by the heavens above.
11:06 I could never ask for more.
11:11 There's a place and a home.
11:14 I see this when you call.
11:17 I see that in your eyes love will never come to end.
11:32 Feel the spaces with embraces.
11:37 Forever you'll be there.
11:42 'Cause in your eyes I found my all.
11:47 You were sent by the heavens above.
11:53 I could never ask for more.
11:58 There's a place and a home.
12:01 I see this when you call.
12:04 Let me walk with you.
12:06 You will see me through.
12:08 'Cause this love's for me.
12:11 And you.
12:12 In your eyes I found my all.
12:21 You were sent by the heavens above.
12:25 By the heavens above.
12:28 I could never ask for more.
12:32 There's a place and a home.
12:35 And I see this when you call.
12:39 Oh.
12:40 I could never ask for more.
12:53 There's a place and a home.
12:55 And I see this when you call.
12:59 There's a place and a home.
13:06 And I see this when you call.
13:13 Jasmine was overcome with fear and nervousness.
13:26 The whole school was shocked to hear Jasmine's singing.
13:31 They didn't think that Jasmine would be so shy.
13:36 She was able to hide her angelic voice.
13:39 In her first competition, she was the winner.
13:44 Since then, she has won and competed in many singing competitions in Hawaii.
13:56 Jasmine's heart started to love her.
14:01 Until...
14:02 It's late.
14:04 Where's your daughter?
14:07 Maybe she's with her friends.
14:10 She's a teenager, you know.
14:11 It's normal to be with friends.
14:13 She's a teenager, you know.
14:14 Maybe she has a boyfriend.
14:25 Dad!
14:26 Bye.
14:33 Hi.
14:54 Who's that?
14:55 Who's the guy you're with?
14:59 Answer me, Ate!
15:00 It's Brian.
15:04 Who is Brian?
15:05 The guy.
15:06 Who is Brian?
15:07 He's my boyfriend.
15:11 Hey, Ate has a boyfriend already.
15:15 Didn't I tell you?
15:18 No boyfriends yet!
15:21 Go to your room.
15:22 You're grounded.
15:23 We're going to talk about this later.
15:24 Now.
15:26 Now!
15:27 See, I told you so.
15:32 It's your fault.
15:33 You always give her everything that she wants.
15:36 You're giving her too much.
15:39 Look, she's getting desperate.
15:40 She's getting emotional.
15:41 Sometimes, Nora, you're like a mother.
15:44 You're disappointing my daughter.
15:46 Can you not teach me how to be a mother?
15:49 I know what I'm doing, okay?
15:51 I don't want to hear it from you again.
15:55 Just watch over her.
15:57 Jess?
16:08 Mommy, why is he like that?
16:18 I know your dad can be a pain in the you-know-where sometimes.
16:23 But remember, he's doing that because he loves you.
16:28 But what's wrong with having a boyfriend?
16:32 My friends are doing the same thing.
16:34 And there's nothing that's forbidden.
16:38 Are you sure?
16:40 Mommy, why can't I be a normal teenager?
16:47 Jess, do you remember what you told me before?
16:49 You want to be a famous singer.
16:52 You don't want to be just an ordinary person, right?
16:56 What's the point of that?
16:59 I think that's what your dad believes.
17:04 There's something that's more important and important than having a boyfriend.
17:13 [music]
17:15 Jasmine was very saddened by her father's decision.
17:22 But it didn't take long for her to realize that her father was just reminding her of his goodness.
17:30 That's why Jasmine just focused on her dream.
17:36 Do you want to be the next Kelly Clarkson or Ruben Stoddard?
17:40 Now you can because the American Idol is coming to Hawaii.
17:44 Jess, did you see that? Come on!
17:46 What?
17:48 They have a singing contest. This is January 11.
17:51 And if you win, you'll be sent to Los Angeles to audition for the American Idol.
17:57 What do you think?
18:00 What do you think?
18:03 I think I should try it.
18:05 Why not? You'll be the first one to go.
18:09 Don't. You'll just waste your time.
18:11 Just let your daughter have a boyfriend.
18:15 Jasmine prepared for that singing competition.
18:25 She joined the voice lesson because for her, this is the start of her dreams.
18:36 [applause]
18:39 Okay, thank you very much.
18:43 I want to congratulate all our contestants because you have shown us the abundant talent that Hawaii has.
18:52 But unfortunately, only two will go to LA to have the chance to audition for American Idol.
19:01 And our two winners are...
19:05 [drum roll]
19:07 Mary Pauline Aquino!
19:11 [applause]
19:14 And Amy Olano!
19:18 [applause]
19:21 [music]
19:30 [applause]
19:32 [music]
19:35 [music]
19:44 Jasmine did not win the competition.
19:51 She was not allowed to go to LA to audition for the nationwide singing competition, American Idol.
20:00 She watched the competition on TV.
20:06 [TV playing]
20:09 American Idol?
20:12 What was that?
20:19 I'm watching.
20:20 You know Jasmine, you should watch this.
20:23 You know, next year, you'll be able to join.
20:26 At least you'll have an idea of what you'll do.
20:28 For me, you're already qualified.
20:31 Watch.
20:33 Yeah, right, Dad.
20:35 What is your problem?
20:38 Daddy, please. Stop it.
20:48 [sighs]
20:49 I'm not in the mood.
20:51 I'm studying for my exam.
20:53 What's wrong?
20:55 What's wrong with giving a little bit of encouragement?
20:58 No. You're just trying to make me do it.
21:01 And it won't work out.
21:03 Dad, I don't want to join American Idol or any other contest.
21:10 It's better if I just continue with these things.
21:14 The things that can be real.
21:18 Sit down.
21:19 I'm still talking. I'm not done yet.
21:22 Jasmine, I may not be that person who can give you the best advice to your problems.
21:31 And I am not as understanding as your mom is towards you.
21:36 And certainly, I am not a perfect father.
21:40 But there's one thing I know, Jas.
21:45 Sometimes, I didn't teach you to give up on your dreams.
21:49 Never.
21:52 Can I go to my room now?
21:57 [gasps]
22:10 [music]
22:34 [music]
22:36 Jasmine is always emotional, especially when her father jokes around.
22:41 That's why Jasmine decided to be quiet and focus on her studies.
22:48 [music]
23:05 Yes. Letter from the Philippines.
23:08 Jas, this is for you. I think this is the scholarship you've been waiting for.
23:13 I'll open it for you.
23:15 Wait. Let me see this.
23:16 I'll open it.
23:17 I'm so nervous.
23:20 What? Tell us.
23:26 Did you pass?
23:28 Of course, I passed. My daughter is smart.
23:32 Congratulations, Jasmine. I'm so proud of you.
23:35 You're right. We'll save money for the scholarship.
23:42 Why don't we use this for our vacation?
23:45 When will we go on vacation, daddy?
23:46 Why not?
23:48 You're so silly. You should praise your daughter first.
23:52 Seriously, congratulations. I truly am very proud of you. This is good.
23:57 Thank you, daddy.
24:01 Excuse.
24:02 Okay, guys. Take a bath. Come on.
24:06 What's wrong with your daughter? Is she on drugs?
24:17 She's not excited about that scholarship?
24:21 Of course. You know why, right?
24:25 She dreams a lot and then she gives up.
24:31 But, daddy, you're so encouraging.
24:33 It's my fault. She wants everything. I give her everything. I support her.
24:39 Except for her boyfriend.
24:41 Okay, you're the one who pays for her lessons. But that's not enough.
24:45 You need to motivate her. Guide her.
24:48 Isn't that your job?
24:50 Okay, okay. Be a philosopher.
24:53 When your daughter is far from you, there's no regret.
24:57 She needs a father, Rudy, not just a provider.
25:00 Even though Jasmine got the nursing scholarship,
25:06 she still feels sad because it's far from her dream.
25:12 Nora, come here. Watch this.
25:16 The American Idol for auditions has arrived here in Hawaii.
25:18 Jazz, have you heard the news?
25:21 What?
25:23 The American Idol will audition here in Hawaii.
25:26 What?
25:27 The American Idol will audition here in Hawaii?
25:30 If you think you've got what it takes to be the next American Idol,
25:33 join Channel 11's next idol singing contest.
25:36 But what's the point? You're not interested, right?
25:38 This might just be your ticket to becoming a pop superstar.
25:41 You're so nosy.
25:47 Just relax. Don't worry.
25:49 It's just a reverse psychology. I'll take care of it.
25:53 I'll talk to her.
25:55 I'll talk to her.
25:56 I'll talk to her.
26:22 You have a problem, Jazz.
26:25 You want to be famous. You want to become famous.
26:30 You want to join the American Idol.
26:32 But you're not doing anything.
26:34 Isn't that a problem?
26:37 Dad, it's my life. Don't bother me.
26:43 Well, I'm sorry. I cannot do that.
26:50 Jazz, you are my daughter. I am your father.
26:54 It is my duty to see to it that you reach your dreams.
26:58 And at the same time, because I love you, I won't let you down.
27:04 I believe in you, Jazz. I believe in your talent.
27:09 One more thing.
27:13 No matter what happens,
27:16 I want you to know that I'm just here by your side.
27:21 I will support you. I promise.
27:25 There. I've told you what I want to say.
27:33 But like you said, it's your life.
27:35 You're the one who decides what you want to happen in your life.
27:38 Dad, are you disappointed with me?
27:44 No, of course not.
27:46 Jasmine, you're smart. You're beautiful.
27:51 I don't need to ask for anything else.
27:54 It's just that you expect too much from yourself.
28:00 That's why your dreams are too high.
28:03 So don't ever disappoint yourself.
28:08 Do you understand me?
28:10 Yes.
28:12 [music]
28:17 From that encounter, Jasmine had a new hope and strength
28:24 to go back and reach her dreams.
28:27 She even auditioned for American Idol.
28:31 Are you sure this is the place?
28:34 Yeah, I got the info on the internet.
28:37 Wow, look at this line.
28:40 Dad, there are so many people.
28:42 [music]
28:53 President May.
28:55 Dad.
28:57 Wow.
29:09 It's quite the curve.
29:10 Okay, I think. I'll be back. I'll be back.
29:14 Bye, Dad.
29:16 [music]
29:37 [music]
29:42 Jasmine was so surprised to see thousands of young people like her
29:49 who wanted to audition for American Idol.
29:52 At that time, Jasmine realized that it won't be easy
29:57 to walk on the path that will lead her to her dreams.
30:05 [cheering]
30:10 Jasmine, I got you some food.
30:13 Dad.
30:16 Yeah.
30:17 Maybe you should go home. I'll be fine.
30:20 No, I'm not gonna do that.
30:22 I already told you.
30:24 Whatever happens, I'll always be here by your side.
30:27 I'm fine.
30:30 But Dad, I didn't think that you would audition for American Idol.
30:35 It's like it's never-ending.
30:38 And I feel like I won't be able to choose.
30:44 Don't worry about it.
30:46 You know, most of these people just want to appear on TV.
30:51 It's a distraction.
30:58 Jas, one thing I need you to know.
31:00 Dreams are not easy to attain.
31:03 It's hard.
31:05 Sometimes, you have to go through a lot of obstacles
31:08 before you can achieve what you want.
31:10 But the thing is,
31:12 the reward, the pleasure of feeling when you get it.
31:16 Right?
31:18 You're right, Dad.
31:20 And that's why I'm here.
31:22 I promise you, Daddy, I'll be the next American Idol.
31:27 That's the spirit.
31:28 That's what I want to hear.
31:30 Eat now, and after this,
31:33 go to bed early.
31:35 Even if it's noisy.
31:37 So you'll have energy tomorrow.
31:39 Jas?
31:53 Jas?
31:56 Wake up.
31:57 What is it?
31:59 There are more people.
32:01 It's starting.
32:03 Get up.
32:05 This is your resume.
32:07 Lots of people.
32:09 Get ready.
32:11 I brought coffee for you.
32:13 Thanks, Dad.
32:15 Let's go.
32:17 [music]
32:19 You're cooking?
32:27 Later?
32:29 [music]
32:33 [music]
32:35 Excuse me.
32:53 What's happening there?
32:55 Why are the people coming out of the tent
32:58 going into two different directions?
33:01 The people going to the left
33:02 are the ones who didn't pass the auditions,
33:04 while the ones going on the right
33:06 have advanced to the next round.
33:08 So you mean there's a second level of auditions
33:10 after this one?
33:12 And the third, that's where we're going to meet
33:14 Randy, Paula, and Simon.
33:16 Okay, thanks.
33:19 [music]
33:47 [music]
33:49 [music]
33:51 [music]
34:15 [music]
34:17 The process and the way of joining
34:18 the American Idol auditions is long.
34:21 They have to go through several auditions,
34:23 including the screening
34:25 that is done by the producers of American Idol.
34:28 Jasmine was lucky to pass this audition.
34:32 But the real test of their skills
34:35 will be measured in front of the judges,
34:38 Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Conley.
34:44 [music]
34:46 Are you okay?
34:48 I'm fine.
34:50 Relax. You look nervous.
34:53 Daddy, will I be chosen?
34:56 Why?
34:58 Because they're all good.
35:02 You're good too.
35:05 You've done this far. No turning back.
35:08 I know that.
35:12 And I won't give up.
35:13 I just wanted your opinion.
35:15 Show off.
35:17 Next, number 49030, Jasmine Turias.
35:24 I'm going to Hollywood.
35:27 Yes.
35:29 Good luck.
35:31 [music]
35:40 [applause]
35:42 Woo!
35:44 [music]
35:46 I got it!
36:06 [music]
36:09 [laughter]
36:10 Jasmine's happiness reached the heavens.
36:16 Her family was also happy
36:18 when she passed the audition of American Idol.
36:21 She felt that this was the beginning of her dream.

38:48 When Jasmine arrived in Pasadena, California,
38:51 the American Idol's auditions continued.
38:56 Jasmine passed through some very difficult qualifying rounds.
39:02 Oh, your rehearsals just ended?
39:07 Here, I ordered some food for you.
39:13 Eat first.
39:14 Here, we got sandwich, juice, cheers.
39:19 Despite all of this, Jasmine passed through all of these
39:24 and was able to join the LA,
39:26 where Jasmine felt the intense pressure
39:30 because all of her teammates here were not good.
39:34 But in the end, Jasmine was chosen as one of the top 12 finalists
39:41 because of her talent in singing and her crazy personality.
39:47 At the age of 16, she was one of the youngest finalists.
39:53 She was slowly getting closer to her dream.
39:57 Until…
39:59 You're saying you'll be the next American Idol.
40:04 Jasmine, why aren't you preparing?
40:09 You'll meet Mr. Elton there. You'll just sleep there.
40:12 Daddy, I don't feel good.
40:17 I'll just go to the bathroom.
40:20 How will you sing?
40:30 Get up. We'll see a doctor. Get up.
40:36 Get up.
40:37 Laryngitis, tonsillitis, and a sore throat.
40:51 So, she can't sing. She has to practice by tomorrow.
40:56 She shouldn't even be speaking.
40:59 Can you give something, at least to relieve it?
41:03 Anything, a prescription?
41:05 I can write her a prescription,
41:09 but she shouldn't be talking for the whole day, as much as possible.
41:13 So, that means she'll be able to sing for tomorrow's competition?
41:18 Even if she does get better,
41:20 I don't think she'll be in the condition to be able to sing.
41:24 I'm very sorry.
41:31 Jasmine, you have millions of viewers.
41:36 You might be embarrassed.
41:38 You know what? I'll call up the producers. I'll explain it to them.
41:41 I'm sure they'll understand the situation.
41:44 Daddy, no. The show must go on.
41:48 I didn't come here to give up.
41:52 The others have already told me that.
41:56 Let's go home. I need to rest.
41:59 Don't talk. Rest.
42:01 Despite her bad mood and lack of practice,
42:08 Jasmine still had the courage to compete.
42:12 But, due to her illness,
42:15 her performance wasn't good.
42:19 I think these are the best songs for you,
42:20 but you were a little pitchy.
42:22 And what happens is that
42:24 sometimes when you go for those high notes,
42:26 you hit just underneath them.
42:28 You fall a little bit off pitch.
42:30 And I really love when you color it up more.
42:32 You're not doing enough to win.
42:36 You're not. You're not, Jasmine.
42:38 You're not. You're not.
42:39 Why are you sad?
42:53 Dad,
42:58 I don't think I can advance to the next level of Final 3.
43:06 I'll probably be eliminated.
43:08 You can never say.
43:10 But if that happens,
43:15 what's important is that we know that you did your best.
43:20 Whether you're an American Idol or not,
43:23 we still love you and your mom.
43:26 We're your number one family.
43:29 And you make us very, very proud.

43:34 Jasmine's hope for her performance was running out.
43:43 But that same night,
43:45 her fans called her phone to ask her to stay on the show.
43:52 Because of her fans' support,
43:56 Jasmine made it to the Top 3.
44:00 Leaving us tonight on American Idol is...

46:59 So Jasmine, did you ever think that you'd become as popular as you are now?
47:03 No, I never thought I'd become even as close to as popular as I am right now.
47:08 When did that start, that you wanted to be a singer?
47:11 Since I was a little girl, I've always wanted to sing.
47:14 Singing and music was my biggest passion.
47:16 And I'd always enter in competitions, talent contests.
47:20 Was it hard to decide to join American Idol?
47:23 No.
47:24 Or right away, you thought, "I'll join."
47:25 Exactly.
47:27 Right away, you said, "I want to do that."
47:28 There was about 3,000 people waiting in line.
47:31 I camped out for two days.
47:33 Really? And how many were to be chosen from among the 3,000?
47:36 Eight.
47:38 Eight from 3,000?
47:39 How did you prepare for that?
47:41 I tried to get a lot of rest, drink lots of water, practice my songs, vocalize a lot.
47:46 How did that feel, auditioning with so many competitors?
47:52 It was pretty intimidating.
47:53 I was 16 at the time, still in high school.
47:56 I was a very quiet person, very shy, very much to myself.
48:00 I would always be focusing on school.
48:02 But seeing all that competition, seeing all the other great talent and older people,
48:07 it intimidated me a little bit.
48:09 Was there any point during the competition where you thought you would not win at all?
48:16 Oh yeah, there was a lot of times where I would lose hope.
48:21 But with the support of my family, and knowing that I had the support from Hawaii,
48:24 from the Philippines, and from all of the Filipinos all over the world,
48:28 it really motivated me to keep on going and to keep on pushing forward.
48:33 Was there ever a point there that you thought you would be number one?
48:38 Yeah, of course.
48:40 When was this?
48:42 I believe it was my very first time on that stage, top 12, when I sang "Inseparable."
48:49 When I made it to top 12, I was so, so happy.
48:52 Just to be on that stage and to feel that kind of emotion,
48:58 the judges in front of you, the cameras there,
49:01 that's when I really realized my potential.
49:04 I was like, you know, I can really do this.
49:07 What is your ultimate ambition?
49:10 To be the biggest international superstar.
49:15 To represent for the Philippines everywhere I go.
49:18 There's not that much representation of the Filipinos mainstream in the U.S.,
49:21 whether it be singing, acting, so I really want to get out there and do that.
49:26 How will you be able to penetrate the mainstream in America?
49:30 Well, I'm going to keep on doing shows, I'm going to keep on putting myself out there,
49:36 and to keep on making songs on my album, you know, promote the album,
49:40 to do as much as I can just to work hard and to keep focused on this career,
49:46 and to keep it going.
49:48 Do you have an American agent now?
49:50 Yes, I do.
49:52 Oh, you do?
49:53 Well, she's Filipino also. She lives in Los Angeles.
49:55 But yeah, she's managing me at this point, and she's been doing a very good job.
50:01 You've stopped schooling since American Idol.
50:04 Yes. I do want to go back to college.
50:07 I graduated from high school. After that, you know, this whole career kind of took off.
50:13 What do you want to take up in college?
50:15 I want to take up business management.
50:17 Why not?
50:18 Because it works, it ties in with what I'm doing right now.
50:21 If for instance, you can't choose, you would only have a choice, one choice,
50:26 between school and career, what would it be?
50:29 Career.
50:30 Career. I knew it would be career.
50:31 What about your personal life? Do you have a boyfriend? Do you go out?
50:36 Do you ever go out?
50:37 Yes, I do.
50:38 Do you enjoy, gimmick, as they call it here?
50:40 I try to.
50:41 This past Christmas, I got some time off to spend with my family and my friends.
50:45 And a lot of my friends from college came back home to visit their family as well.
50:49 So all of us got to reunite, and we got to hang out again.
50:53 So yes, I do spend time with my friends and family whenever I can.
50:57 But no boyfriend right now.
50:59 What do you want to be when you grow up?
51:01 My career is number one right now.
51:03 You can have a boyfriend in your career.
51:05 Right? You can have one tomorrow, right?
51:07 There are two big commitments, and my biggest commitment right now is my career.
51:12 And I don't want any distractions. I'm just so focused on it.
51:15 Okay, okay. You're 19 now.
51:17 At what age do you want to start your personal life?
51:21 Well, I do have a personal life right now, but if I want to start dating or have a boyfriend, that kind of thing,
51:27 that probably won't start until I feel that my career is there.
51:32 And I have established myself as a Filipino superstar in the U.S.
51:39 And until I complete my dream, until I accomplish that dream, that can happen.
51:44 Do you want to be Filipino or American?
51:47 I don't really have a preference.
51:49 Really?
51:50 Yeah. It depends on the person.
51:53 Someone that's very caring, very thoughtful, very sweet.

52:01 Of course. And understand what I do.

52:08 I just want to go back to the time when you auditioned.
52:11 Did you prepare a song? Did you have a prepared song that you sang?
52:16 Yes. My favorite song of all time is "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston.
52:21 And so that was my number one audition song on American Idol.
52:24 I sang that throughout all the stages of American Idol until I got to TV.
52:30 Can I ask for a song?
52:32 And I will always love you.

53:17 I know. I really can't believe it.
53:19 And I'm so grateful for that, to be receiving all the support.
53:23 And that is exactly what keeps me motivated and keeps my hopes high for the future.
53:28 Would you like to talk to your fans?
53:30 Yes. I just want to say, maraming, maraming salamat po sa lahat for all the support, for all the love.
53:37 It really means the world to me.
53:39 And I'm going to keep on going and keep on representing for all of you until my huge dream comes true.
