00:00 Did you know there is a former dungeon for convicts that can be found at a boutique hotel in Midegong?
00:04 I'm Brianna and I'm here from the Southern Highland News to give you a sneak peek and a bit of a guided tour through the Fitzroy Inn.
00:11 Many would know it as a popular wedding destination, but there's more to this venue than meets the eye.
00:16 I am standing in the Inn's kitchen down below where behind this couch here is the original
00:21 spring-fed well, which is eight feet deep.
00:24 It's believed that once the water source was found the Inn was built around it so it could supply everything.
00:30 And in the kitchen as well, you will be able to see some of the original stone
00:34 where some of it might look familiar because it's actually the same stone used at the Berrima Jail.
00:40 Previously the accommodation was also a travellers inn, a private boarding school for boys and a private boarding and guest house.
00:48 It's it's very historic. I mean, this is one of the first inns in
00:52 Australia, it's the first inn in New South Wales to have a liquor license. It's just
00:57 just it's what we've got
00:59 which goes back. Another key feature at this Inn is the cells where prisoners were sent either to or from the
01:07 Parramatta Jail on the way to Berrima Jail. Fun fact, the Inn is also home to Australia's first ever tennis court.
01:13 See it all for yourself with a historic open day on June 1. Head to the southernhighlandnews.com.au to find out more.
