The multiple tornadoes reported in Iowa on May 21 are just the beginning of severe storms making their way across the country this week.
Transcript
00:00 Many areas are under those tornado watches from east of Tulsa all the way up to Green Bay, Wisconsin.
00:06 So from Lambeau Field all the way down to the area around Joplin, Missouri.
00:10 It's a long distance with this tornado threat continuing east of I-35.
00:14 We're looking at a high risk.
00:15 That's three out of four on the ACUEA, the threat level index for these damaging winds and also multiple tornadoes.
00:22 The Storm Survey crews are going to be busy over the next few days.
00:24 So they're playing at Wrigley Field right now.
00:26 Later tonight, deep into the evening, they're playing faster baseball these days with the pitch clock and so forth.
00:32 That may work in our favor here at Wrigley with damaging winds and the large hail risk marching right into northeast Illinois.
00:40 The risk now is creeping into northwest Illinois.
00:43 Here we go into Missouri.
00:43 You're going to see the St. Louis label populate here.
00:46 And later this evening, damaging wind and large hail are the biggest threats in St. Louis.
00:51 But there is a risk of a tornado there, too.
00:54 So we mentioned multiple ways to get information.
00:57 We want you to be armed with the best information so you can make those decisions more easily to keep your family safe.
01:03 If you're tuned in, you're likely one of the people responsible for the well-being of others in your home.
01:08 And we want you to be aware.
01:10 We're going to see more tornadoes this year.
01:11 We've had 839 so far this year.
01:13 That's 200 more reports above average for the date.
01:17 Another way of looking at it is we are where we would typically be in mid to late June here at mid to late May.
01:23 So we're running a month ahead of schedule with our tornado count.
01:25 That means we're way above average.
01:27 And we're going to see more risks tomorrow, perhaps a few more tornadoes.
01:31 Also some large hail in north Texas, southern Oklahoma and Arkansas.
01:35 And some risk for damaging wind and hail even up into the Ohio Valley in the interior northeast.
01:41 So we'll be watching as these storms from tonight, they'll be strong and severe for a few more hours.
01:45 They'll fizzle around mid-morning.
01:46 And then they're going to regenerate tomorrow into the afternoon through the southern plains and into the Ozarks.
01:51 and beyond into the Ohio Valley.
01:53 And so the flooding is a big threat here, too.
