Opening Prime Minister’s Questions, the Labour leader said Rishi Sunak's focus should be on the "chaos" facing prisons. Sir Keir Starmer said: After 14 years of Tory government, the prison system is in chaos. Does the prime minister think that his decision to let prisoners out 70 days early, makes our country more secure?" Mr Sunak insisted that "there are strict eligibility criteria in place" to ensure there is no threat to public safety. Report by Covellm. 00:00 After 14 years of Tory government, the prison system is in chaos.
00:05 Does the Prime Minister think that his decision to let prisoners out 70 days early
00:10 makes our country more secure?
00:13 But when he talks about the prison scheme, let me be crystal clear,
00:18 no one would be put on the scheme if they were deemed a threat to the public.
00:22 Offenders are subject to the toughest of licensing conditions,
00:26 and if those conditions are broken, they are back in prison
00:28 for considerably longer.
00:30 But what's his record on this?
00:32 He voted against tougher sentences for violent criminals.
00:36 He actually opposed new powers for the police to tackle violent crime.
00:41 Voted against new laws that have arrested 1,000 criminal people smugglers.
00:47 The message is crystal clear.
00:49 He can't be trusted to keep this country safe.
00:52 [Cheering]
00:54 I appreciate that all this rebranding is taking all of his time,
00:57 but he may want to read the recent inspection report into Lewis Prison
01:02 on this topic I've asked him twice about.
01:05 It documents, it documents page 5,
01:09 high-risk prisoners being released at short notice without sufficient planning.
01:16 Page 46, a high-risk prisoner had his release date brought forward
01:22 despite a history of stalking, domestic abuse and a restraining order.
01:28 Their words, he was a risk to children.
01:32 Does the early release of stalkers, domestic abusers
01:36 and those considered a risk to children
01:38 sound like the work of someone who is making the country more secure?
