Sir Keir Starmer has fought back after Rishi Sunak today warned the Labour leader "can't be trusted" to "keep Britain safe", with the risk of nuclear war the highest since the 1960s. Speaking in the West Midlands today, Mr Starmer said: "I know first-hand the importance of national security which is why I made such a commitment to the national security of our country."

00:00No, we would not be less safe under a Labour government. A Labour government has always
00:06understood and I understand very well, having worked on national security in my previous
00:13role when I was Director of Public Prosecutions. I know first hand the importance of national
00:18security, which is why I've made such a commitment to the national security of our country. But
00:25in order to make that happen you need a credible plan for the future. This government talks
00:30about national security, but what's its record? It's hollowed out our armed forces, it's wasted
00:38billions of pounds on procurement and doesn't have a credible plan for the future. We are
00:44much more serious than that and that is because we're a changed Labour party that puts our
00:50country first and our party second.
