01:14 It is true that we have a lot of questions to ask you,
01:17 since you are one of those DJs who have, in quotation marks,
01:22 this intelligence of the heart.
01:25 Music, in your case, comes from the inside,
01:27 before expressing itself outside.
01:30 There is something very organic, very physiological.
01:32 And then there is this nomadic music, which encompasses a lot of things.
01:38 But concretely, what is it, Romain?
01:42 Well, concretely, I have created a rather particular creative process,
01:48 where I go to places where nature is dominant,
01:52 with my instruments and my microphones.
01:56 I record, I capture these sounds,
01:58 and I compose, in situ, on the spot, entirely, concept albums.
02:03 I went, for example, in 2013,
02:05 aboard a big boat, in the middle of the North Atlantic,
02:09 to put on music La Tempête.
02:10 Then I did a project on the giant wave of Nazaré, in Portugal.
02:15 And a project, we saw some images, in Greenland,
02:19 on the bank, to work around silence.
02:22 And that's what is very interesting in your musical universe,
02:26 it's this promiscuity with the elements, with nature, and finally, with man.
02:31 And it's no coincidence that you express this through music.
02:34 But how did the decision, the awareness, come about to take this path?
02:42 Well, it came about in a rather natural way, a little unconscious at first.
02:48 The idea was to live these childhood dreams,
02:53 and in particular, to go behind this horizon line, in the middle of the sea,
02:55 and compose, in situ, an album.
02:58 And then, little by little, I understood that there was a will
03:02 to find the link with nature, to restore this link, to maintain it.
03:07 And these are projects that highlight the importance of the link,
03:13 of connecting to the environment, to the elements.
03:16 And it's also a way to try to answer the big questions of life.
03:22 A somewhat existential research, and as you said, unconscious.
03:27 But is it, how to say concretely, because it interests me a lot,
03:31 personally, do you feel that the world speaks to you,
03:35 that nature speaks to you, before transcribing it?
03:38 Are you trying to transcribe it in language,
03:40 or are you the one who decrypts it, in a way?
03:44 I'm a bit of a passer-by in this type of project,
03:47 where I try as much as possible to almost disappear,
03:51 to resonate with the environment in which I evolve,
03:55 to be in a very deep listening.
03:58 It's a posture that's close to meditation.
04:02 And then, I would say that the musical notes come to rest,
04:07 like that, on these recordings.
04:09 It has to be done in the most fluid way possible.
04:13 I try to do nothing in terms of inspiration,
04:16 and not to be too intellectual.
04:18 So it's really about creating the conditions for the music to be born.
04:24 So yes, I would say that I'm a bit of a carrier.
04:31 I allow, in a way, the elements,
04:35 the harmony, the music that is in nature, to take shape.
04:40 In any case, it's one of my goals.
04:43 There was also this very interesting project
04:45 where you put your brainwaves into music.
04:48 It's a bit of a cibeline, but can you tell us a little more about it?
04:53 Yes, I like to be at the crossroads of the arts,
04:57 technology and music, of course.
05:02 I set up, by collaborating with a technology
05:07 from a French startup two years ago,
05:11 to create the instrument of the future.
05:13 It's an instrument that is played only by thought,
05:16 and whose sounds are generated, modulated in real time
05:19 by its brain activity.
05:21 It's a rather amazing instrument,
05:24 which has a strong personality, which has character,
05:26 which is quite radical.
05:28 And I'm going to play this instrument again
05:31 for an exceptional event a few days after my visit to Tangier.
05:38 And you came to Tangier, which is at our doorstep,
05:41 for the third edition of the Sama Festival.
05:44 So, a very eclectic programming, literature, art,
05:48 gastronomy this year as well.
05:50 And then there's this special, electro.
05:53 I know you've already been to Morocco,
05:57 especially in Tangier, several times.
06:00 What is your link with Africa, Morocco and its musical culture?
06:05 Have you experienced it before?
06:08 I've never played in Morocco before,
06:12 so it's going to be a first.
06:14 But it's a country that I've been fond of for a long time.
06:17 I had the privilege of being in residence in Tangier
06:21 for several weeks, some time ago,
06:24 to do an exhibition at the Conil Gallery.
06:27 And so it's a return that I'm really looking forward to.
06:32 For me, it's a country with which I have a strong emotional connection.
06:39 There's a very important Moroccan community in Paris.
06:43 So I feel like I'm at home,
06:46 and at the same time, I feel totally out of place.
06:49 So I'm quite excited and curious to see
06:53 how the Moroccan public will react to this event,
06:57 and how we'll try to communicate together.
