00:17Thank you to everybody in this house but I will be supporting the suspension of
00:21standing orders and I do so with full knowledge that everybody plays politics
00:26in this place and I really wish you wouldn't. We see the Coalition and
00:30Greens not turn up last week for the joint announcement. That was wrong. Not
00:36wanting to deal with this manner raised by the Liberals at this point is also
00:40wrong. It's such an important issue. I'm happy to support this but I want all of
00:44you to stop supporting your party rooms and instead start supporting the women
00:49who are affected here. People say the Libs have been there 12 years and what
00:54did they do? They did nothing. People say it's better if the government put
00:59these these motions forward. Well I actually don't care. It's not about us.
01:04It's about the people out there without a voice and the people who are at home
01:08right now afraid their partner will return this evening and they can't leave.
01:12It's about the people who can't speak up, all of whom are afraid. It's about one
01:18woman who dies every few days but it's not just her. It's about the women that
01:22are sitting there terrified whose children are vomiting because they're
01:26worried about going to school and we need to do something right now. Sexism
01:31in Australia is rife and I've experienced it myself in the last couple
01:36of weeks and really I shouldn't be supporting the people on this side of
01:40the house because they're friends with the people that have been doing it to me.
01:43But I don't care. All I care about is that we do the right thing for our
01:49community. That's what I was elected to do, to have a conscience on every single
01:53vote. We can agree what's not acceptable. For those out there that are under
01:58threat we need to do something right now. Who here has not had a resident come to
02:03them with concerns about their life, concerns in needing shelter and needing
02:08help or just needing to be there because they can't even come to terms with what
02:12they live with? Who here is unaware of the statistics right now? My community
02:17may be different to all of you. We need to start thinking more broadly and more
02:22openly and I don't care where the motions come from. I don't care whether
02:26they come from the Labor, the Libs, the Nationals or the Greens. The motions
02:30should be looked at on its merit and on such an important issue we should be
02:34working together on every measure that must be taken, on every single thing that
02:38we can do and I compel members to think hard about this. Even if it prevents one
02:44death it's worth it and you will never know who you save but that is better
02:51than knowing who you didn't.
