00:00 Hello, how are you madam?
00:02 How are you feeling?
00:04 Any surprises tonight?
00:06 Obviously disappointed about Maryhill I take it?
00:08 We are very disappointed about Maryhill.
00:10 Did you see that coming?
00:12 We had a suspicion about it.
00:14 There was every effort put in,
00:16 right across the board I've got to say.
00:18 Wherever we've got a councillor
00:20 and where we've got
00:22 respective councillors
00:24 that had a good effort
00:26 then we absolutely
00:28 put in every kind of support
00:30 that we possibly could.
00:32 So it was disappointing about Maryhill
00:34 but we're very pleased
00:36 with some of the results that we got.
00:38 Some of those results were way up
00:40 and some of them we think
00:42 were within reach next time.
00:44 Wolverhampton desperately needs it.
00:46 We need to have a strong
00:48 opposition group.
00:50 There's no doubt about that at all.
00:52 There were too many
00:54 spoilt ballot papers,
00:56 there were too many
00:58 ballot papers that were blank.
01:00 We understand why.
01:02 We understand we have a mixed community
01:04 in Wolverhampton so we get that.
01:06 But we do
01:08 really think that Wolverhampton
01:10 needs a strong opposition group
01:12 because this Labour Party
01:14 needs to be made far more accountable.
01:16 We have issues
01:18 with the bins not being collected,
01:20 we have issues with the city centre
01:22 being in a far too poor estate
01:24 being in a far too poor estate
01:26 we have issues with the roads
01:28 and this Labour Party
01:30 is failing on so many
01:32 different aspects.
01:34 So we're very close with some of the areas
01:36 we would like to have done more
01:38 we would like to have more success
01:40 but we're very pleased
01:42 with seeing some of those
01:44 Conservative votes
01:46 rising. They have come through
01:48 and it is a difficult
01:50 election because
01:52 there is feeling about
01:54 the government, there is no doubt about that
01:56 and we very much hope that the
01:58 region will get the right
02:00 Mayor. We very much support Andrew Street
02:02 and we hope for the right result there as well.
02:04 So Steve,
02:06 leader of the council, I guess
02:08 congratulations. He's in order chap, there's a very red
02:10 board behind you. Is that what you were expecting?
02:12 Well, you know, in the national picture
02:14 obviously we were expecting a good
02:16 bounce for Labour but what I'm really pleased
02:18 about is that we've won Maryhill.
02:20 Maryhill has always been a
02:22 Conservative Dean seat and now we've proved
02:24 that we can book that trend. What's important
02:26 for me is I've added
02:28 extra Labour councillors there
02:30 and let me say this, the hard work starts now
02:32 because we need to focus
02:34 laser focus on our city
02:36 and it's really important that all
02:38 elected members see the city
02:40 in the true light of what it is.
02:42 There's a real atmosphere and buzz around the city
02:44 and I think it's encouraging
02:46 and that's proved at the ballot box today.
