00:00 SportsFest with Rick Harrow. College Sports Minute. What a week in college sports below the line. Not just after the draft, the FTC, Federal Trade Commission, has ruled non-competes inherently illegal after the current round of non-competes are signed.
00:15 At 30 million Americans who have had non-competes given to them or thrust on them may be no longer valid after this next round of contracts is over. Most important to us, what does it mean to college and pro coaches?
00:28 Well, many say it's going to fundamentally change negotiations after Nick Saban's $100 million domino effect all the way through coaching. Does a non-compete mean as much as it did before, especially after signings?
00:42 The buyouts are structured at the beginning of negotiations. Everybody understands that. But if you phrase it as a non-compete, the FTC may lump you in with other businesses that say it's illegal. We don't know the answers, but we understand this is another in a long line of questions plaguing college sports.
