00:03 Hi, there.
00:07 This is me, Ansh Pandey, and you are
00:10 watching One India English and international news wrap.
00:14 In the whirlwind of global events,
00:16 the world today is experiencing unprecedented upheaval.
00:20 From scorching heat waves striking traditionally frigid
00:24 regions to once arid locals now drowning
00:27 under the torrents of water, the climate's chaos
00:30 mirrors the tumult in our society.
00:33 In addition, as some places bask in the tranquil of nights,
00:36 other are witnessing ominous shadow of censorship
00:39 descending upon the revered bastions of free thought.
00:43 We are talking of the United States here.
00:46 And also, there is an offensive in the waiting
00:49 for a green signal.
00:50 However, our traditionally renowned diplomats
00:53 are trying their best to derail any chance
00:56 of a new violent crisis.
00:59 Indeed, the world today is a stage
01:01 where every scene is unfolding with a riveting
01:03 unpredictability.
01:05 And so, in this attention-grabbing edition
01:07 of international news wrap, we delve
01:09 into the pulse of global dynamics,
01:12 capturing the essence of transformative movements.
01:15 So without any further delay, let's
01:17 embark on this accelerating journey
01:19 through the latest developments in the international arena.
01:25 Starting with the big news of the day, Abu Dhabi and Dubai
01:28 are once again thrusting into chaos
01:30 as heavy rains and thunderstorms have struck early Thursday
01:34 morning, catching the residents off guard.
01:37 In Dubai, strong winds and lightning
01:39 struck at around 3 AM in the morning,
01:41 defying earlier weather forecasts.
01:44 An unstable ember alert has now been issued,
01:48 and it is swept across the country by 4 AM
01:50 in the morning, signaling the encroachment of the rain-bearing
01:54 clouds.
01:55 The deluge commenced in Abu Dhabi's Al-Dhafra and Al-Sila
01:59 areas near midnight, with moderate report
02:01 to heavy rainfall too, and even some small hailstones
02:05 being reported around 1.30 AM in western islands.
02:09 Simultaneously, the cities of Mohammed bin Zayed and Al
02:13 Shoumaik also experienced rainfall accompanied
02:16 by lightning and thunder.
02:18 The Dubai police, after all this,
02:20 again issued a safety advisory cautioning the residents
02:24 to steer clear of the beaches, sailing
02:26 valleys, and low-lying areas due to the unpredictable weather.
02:30 The Emirate is now bracing for further weather fluctuations,
02:34 as reported by the local media.
02:37 The UAE's prior alert from medium to heavy rains
02:40 also prompted companies to pivot to remote work and schools
02:43 to embrace distance learning.
02:47 Meanwhile, Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state
02:50 also grappled with a calamitous toll of severe rainfall,
02:53 witnessing 10 fatalities and 21 individuals
02:56 being reportedly missing.
02:58 The governor of the state, Eduardo Leite,
03:00 has labeled it as the state's worst disaster,
03:03 urging for federal assistance during a press briefing.
03:06 The Brazil's president, Luiz Inácio Lula da
03:09 Cínva, has also announced his plan
03:11 to visit the afflicted region on Thursday
03:13 in response to Leite's plea.
03:16 The storm wrought havoc, searing vital infrastructure,
03:20 roads, bridges, and living towns isolated amid floods and mudslides
03:24 too.
03:25 The governor has declared a statewide suspension
03:28 of classes for the week, calling for robust support
03:30 from the armed forces to navigate the crisis.
03:33 If we talk about the data, approximately 3,500 individuals
03:37 have been displaced, with floods wreaking
03:39 havoc across 114 municipalities, whereas similar scenes are also
03:43 breaking out in other parts of the world too, like Kenya
03:46 and China's Guangdong region too,
03:47 where a tornado was also reported.
03:50 This indeed raises some serious concerns
03:53 about the climate crisis, which is taking the world by storm.
03:59 Now, as we come to the United States,
04:01 the atmosphere at major universities
04:03 is tense and fraught with conflict and uncertainty too.
04:08 On 27th of April, law enforcement
04:10 arrested approximately 200 students
04:12 from pro-Palestinian encampments at three universities,
04:16 escalating the clashes between the police and the students
04:19 across the nation.
04:20 The crackdown on pro-Palestinian encampments
04:23 has expanded to universities in the UK, Canada, France, Germany,
04:27 and Australia too, with the solidarity of US students
04:31 and Palestinian groups.
04:34 The organizers of the student protests
04:36 are accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza
04:38 and are demanding educational institutes
04:41 to divest from business ties with Israel and defense
04:44 companies.
04:45 However, the critics of this movement
04:47 are alleging that violent and anti-Semitic slogans are being
04:50 raised in these protests.
04:52 If one remembers, we had also seen a very prominent Jewish
04:55 student getting attacked in these protests too.
04:58 In Boston, armed forces in riot gear
05:00 detained 102 protesters while dismantling a camp
05:04 near the Northeastern University.
05:06 The university also reported virulent anti-Semitic slurs,
05:09 like "kill the Jews" being shouted at the encampment.
05:14 Similarly, police also arrested 69 protesters
05:17 for trespassing at the encampment
05:18 near the Arizona State University,
05:20 comprising of mostly non-student faculty, staff,
05:24 or who ignored the orders to disperse.
05:26 The university administrators in the United States
05:29 are facing a significant challenge
05:30 to balance free speech with concerns of hate speech
05:34 during these protests.
05:35 President Joe Biden himself has remained silent
05:38 on the matter of student protests and police crackdowns,
05:42 while the Republicans are attempting to leverage
05:44 campus unrest over the Gaza conflict
05:47 against the Democrats.
05:49 The tensions have escalated on college campuses too,
05:52 as some demonstrators are refusing
05:54 to dismantle the encampments, prompting administrators
05:57 to resort to law enforcement intervention,
05:59 leading to clashes have garnered attention
06:02 from the politicians and even the media across the world.
06:06 Despite Biden's condemnation of anti-Semitic protests,
06:09 his remarks have not been enough
06:12 to quell the ongoing protests,
06:13 and so the tensions are rising,
06:15 and so the crackdown is also ensuing
06:18 in the prominent US universities like Columbia and Howard.
06:22 And yes, if we are talking about the Gaza conflict,
06:26 it's quite impossible if we don't talk about the Gaza war.
06:30 What's the latest update?
06:31 Well, Hamas on Wednesday night
06:33 signaled its apparent rejection
06:36 of the latest hostage deal proposal
06:38 crafted by the mediators and approved by Israel.
06:43 The Osama Hamdan, a Hamas official based in Lebanon,
06:46 has conveyed this stance in an interview
06:49 with the Hezbollah-affiliated news channel
06:51 that Hamas's position on the current negotiation paper
06:55 is negative, so they have outrightly rejected
06:58 the proposed deal, the truce offer.
07:00 The statement from Hamas came amid ongoing efforts
07:03 by the mediators, including Qatar, Egypt,
07:06 and the United States too, to broker a truce
07:09 between Israel and Hamas,
07:10 aimed at securing the release of hostages
07:13 held by the militant group in Gaza.
07:15 Hamas's press office also later clarified the stance,
07:18 emphasizing that while they hold the negative view
07:21 of this current proposal, negotiations is still not stopping.
07:25 This indicates that Hamas still wants to talk
07:28 on this proposal, despite agreement on key aspects
07:31 of the proposed deal.
07:34 The proposed deal, which Israel has already agreed to,
07:37 involved phased release of the hostages
07:39 in exchange for certain concessions from both sides.
07:43 However, Hamas perceives the proposal as insufficient
07:46 in addressing its demands and concerns
07:49 regarding the cessation of hostilities
07:51 and broader issues related to the conflict.
07:54 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,
07:57 also known as Bibi, during a meeting
07:59 with the U.S. Secretary of State, Anthony Lincoln,
08:01 also reaffirmed Israel's commitment to launch
08:04 a massive invasion of Rafa, a city in Gaza,
08:07 regardless of the outcome of the negotiations.
08:11 Hamas, so as per these reports,
08:13 sees Netanyahu's offensive resolution as a problem.
08:16 If one remembers, Netanyahu had already made it apparent
08:20 a few days ago that truce or no truce,
08:23 Rafa offensive will happen at any cost.
08:25 And so, even the IDF had started building up
08:27 near the Rafa borders and waited for a green light.
08:31 This is the only reason why Antony Lincoln
08:34 came rushing to Israel to somehow convince Netanyahu
08:37 to drop the plans.
08:38 However, the way as we see it,
08:40 it has not conceptualized even yet.
08:43 And so, here we are at the end
08:46 of our international news wrap of the day
08:48 with the big and crucial international news updates,
08:51 which you may have missed, but we got it covered for you.
