00:00 Do you have confidence in the police when it comes to solving crime?
00:04 After a spate of scandals involving officers and a rise in rates of certain offences like
00:08 shoplifting and online crime, a poll from YouGov has revealed less than half of the
00:13 public trust the police to catch the culprits.
00:16 Only a quarter of people believe the police would catch a burglar and as low as 7% are
00:20 confident a pickpocket would be caught.
00:22 But why is police confidence so low?
00:24 In March 2021, Sarah Everard was murdered by serving Metropolitan Police Officer Wayne
00:29 Cousins.
00:30 And in the same year, serial rapist and Met Police Officer David Carrick was apprehended
00:34 and imprisoned.
00:36 While not the only incidents of this kind, they were the latest in a long line of scandals,
00:40 further affecting public opinion and trust.
00:42 In addition, we've seen detection rates dropping, court backlogs at record highs and prisons
00:47 overflowing too.
00:48 But forces across the country are facing their own pressures, with issues around staffing,
00:53 an increase in work-related violence and other factors meaning morale among officers is
00:57 at an all-time low.
00:58 Organisations representing police like Polfed say that under these circumstances, they're
01:03 not surprised trust is so low.
