00:00 I want to know just how proud you are of your son.
00:02 I'm very proud. He's a very creative guy and he gets the thing in his bonnet and he goes out and does it.
00:10 Full circle moment. 20 years ago was his first acting credit in The Princess Diaries 2.
00:14 I'm sorry I stepped on your foot.
00:16 You can step on my foot anytime.
00:19 And here we are at the premiere of his directorial debut. How about that?
00:22 I mean, this may, it'll be 60 years I've been doing this and I've never done something like this.
00:28 So I've directed a couple of things but not my own thing that I helped to write, direct, star in and produce.
00:34 Did he ever call you late at night to be like, "Dad, I gotta run this idea by you. What do you think about this?"
00:39 No. He's never done that. He did ask us to do a reading, my wife and I, a reading of the script for them when they first did it.
00:49 I played Danny DeVito's part and she played Annette Bening's part and that was a lot of fun.
00:55 I made some scripts and I noticed some of my dialogue that we were just talking on it that appeared in the film.
01:05 What am I tasting here? This is my take on the Langer's Egg Cream. A little bit of cinnamon. It's brilliant!
01:11 We know your son as an artist and as a star. What's one thing we'd be surprised to know about him?
01:16 He's incredibly intelligent. I think of all four of us in the family, he's the smartest.
01:23 Not taking nothing away from my wife and my daughter because they're pretty smart too. I'm the dummy.
01:30 I'm going to say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. It had to come from somewhere.
01:35 Yes, but it came mostly from my wife. There were two seeds in there that made him. The brains came from her, it didn't come from me.
01:45 He's actually a very shy guy. He's very private. I'm very proud of him because anytime they say, "Oh, you're Chris Pine's father."
01:55 I say, "Yes, I worked with him." What a wonderful guy he is to work with.
01:59 And that means more to me than anything. More than his films and everything.
02:03 He presents himself as a wonderful addition to this business just because he's very inclusive.
02:11 And when you work with him, I've always said that if you're number one, two, or three on the cast list, you're the host of the party.
02:19 It behooves you to welcome people to the set and make it easy for them.
02:24 What do you think of his long hair and the short shorts he's rocking around town these days?
02:27 Come on, come on.
02:29 Of course, it's your influence. I knew it.
02:31 I saw my barber here who is also Chris's barber. I said, "Don't worry, I haven't had my hair cut since October."
02:41 And you cut it.
02:43 Well, you never know. You may get a job and you need long hair. You can't grow it.
02:49 Stay ready, you ain't got to get ready. I love it. Good to meet you. Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
