00:00 >> What's your plan for Thursday?
00:01 Are you ready to unveil your starters?
00:04 Are you gonna look?
00:06 >> Yeah, there's some guys that probably won't play as much.
00:10 We're gonna get a real good look at our reserves.
00:13 And but I hate to say that a guy's not gonna play this early.
00:18 And then if that guy has to play, then his mind's not right.
00:22 So I'd rather him think that he's gonna play, and
00:25 then I tell him before the game he's not gonna play.
00:27 >> One of those guys that probably doesn't have to play is number 17.
00:30 Would he be a guy that- >> He would be a guy that might be
00:34 one of the ball caps, 17.
00:35 Yeah, that is true.
00:37 I think we have four quarterbacks in camp.
00:41 We have three good guys that are competing hard.
00:44 And I wanna see how those guys play.
00:46 >> One thing that Phillip did talk about is the fact that you had those two
00:49 joint scrimmages back to back and got like 80 reps.
00:52 >> No doubt. >> So he probably got a lot and
00:54 he doesn't really need the preseason work.
00:56 >> Yeah, I had him close to 95 to 100 reps.
00:59 And I mean, those are live as can be, but protecting quarterbacks.
01:02 So those are valuable reps.
01:03 >> What do you expect on that first day during your linebackers and
01:09 your secondary?
01:10 >> Linebackers have had a good camp so far.
01:12 And but we gotta go play an opponent and we get a chance to watch the film and
01:16 evaluate and see how they're learning the system because we have a lot of new guys.
01:21 And so but right now they're playing fast, they're playing physical.
01:24 I like what I see.
01:24 >> Sam Tevye, a young guy that's played a lot last year.
01:30 Trent, he hasn't played a ton.
01:33 Is he a guy you would expect to play more in the preseason?
01:35 And then how do you balance that with, I'm sure you want that line to work.
01:39 >> Every player's different.
01:40 I mean, not every starter is gonna sit in preseason because I gotta get
01:45 the guys what they need to get ready for week one.
01:48 And so and every player's different.
01:49 But Trent's a young tackle.
01:51 He need reps for his lamp.
01:54 Basically, it's been out for a couple years.
01:56 He need reps.
01:57 So those guys are gonna get plenty of playing time.
02:00 >> Anthony, because this is week one preseason versus week one regular season,
02:05 am I correct that you don't game plan and
02:08 you just, how do you balance on evaluating guys?
02:12 >> No, you just want guys executing and doing what they're told to do and
02:16 you can evaluate that.
02:18 If it's scheme, then that falls back on coaches.
02:21 We don't have time to scheme preseason again.
02:24 Most people don't, to be honest with you.
02:26 But we want guys going out, executing, playing fast, physical,
02:31 where we can evaluate that.
02:33 >> So how is this different?
02:35 Obviously, the numbers are much bigger, but for a road game,
02:39 how is it different compared to a regular season game this week?
02:43 >> You have 90 players.
02:45 Anytime you have that many guys on the roster, you have more chances for
02:48 distractions.
02:49 That's why injured guys stay behind.
02:51 They don't travel with us.
02:53 But it's not that much difference once the game starts,
02:58 because it's a real football game.
03:00 And anytime we strap it up and we get on the football field, we're trying to win.
03:04 And that's what we're gonna do, try to win.
03:07 >> From the time these guys arrived at OTAs and such,
03:11 you were talking about culture and being a professional.
03:14 And now here we are a couple days from that first preseason,
03:16 you're talking about their minds right.
03:18 What needs to happen in these next couple of days from your standpoint to get their
03:22 minds right?
03:23 >> Well, you're gonna learn a lot Thursday night about some of these guys,
03:26 because you see them all OTAs, mini camps, two weeks of training camp.
03:31 Now you get to see them in a live game.
03:33 And this is the real evaluation right here.
03:35 Now we've had a lot of exposures, but this is the big one right here.
03:38 So we're learning a lot about the depth that we have.
03:40 And we expect that depth to continue to get better and
03:42 to continue to develop.
03:43 A lot of young guys right now, and they're gonna play.
03:46 So I don't wanna put too much into Thursday, but
03:50 it'll be the first time we get a chance to see these guys in live game.
03:53 >> Anthony, you mentioned the two tackles and the force, that guard.
03:56 With that offensive line and where Russ is in terms of his health,
03:59 how important is it to get as many reps as you can against potentially
04:03 the starting five you're gonna have for the regular season?
04:07 >> It's very important just to get those reps for experience and
04:09 just the games up front and the communication with one another.
04:13 That's the most important thing with those reps.
04:15 We get a lot of the quality reps in practice.
04:17 Those guys go up against two pretty good pass rushers every single day.
04:20 So I'm not worried about the competition, but
04:23 they need to work together in a game environment.
04:25 And when it's loud, you gotta communicate, pass off games and things like that.
04:29 That's what we're lacking a little bit.
04:31 As far as physical talent, those guys are pretty talented, but
04:34 they just need more experience.
04:35 >> And you had Davis come back to practice, come off the cuff.
04:39 >> Yeah. >> Nice to see him out there.
04:41 >> It's good to see him out there.
04:42 He's picked up pretty much where he left off.
04:44 He's had a good off season.
04:46 He's had a good camp so far.
04:47 Now we'll see if he can take it into the games.
04:49 >> How are you with the [INAUDIBLE] in particular?
04:53 It seems like Austin taking that number one spot.
04:58 >> That group's had a fine camp as a group.
05:00 You have some young guys in there that you probably haven't heard of, but
05:03 I think they're gonna catch your eye in the preseason.
05:06 There's Jeremy Cox, he's pretty steady.
05:10 And we're gonna get a chance to see him run a little bit.
05:11 He's playing two positions.
05:12 He's playing fullback and running back.
05:15 So that slowed him down a little bit, but I like what he's done so far.
05:18 >> I know you're focused on your guys, but
05:21 it doesn't sound like Murray's gonna play a whole lot for them.
05:26 Are you interested, though, to see what Tyler, what will be his first game?
05:30 What he might do?
05:31 >> I'm not sure how much he's playing.
05:35 I mean, we really don't care.
05:37 We just, we know what guys we're gonna play.
05:39 It'll be exciting to watch him play.
05:41 I mean, I think he's a heck of a football player.
05:43 That's why he was first pick in the draft.
05:45 He grew up 15 minutes from where I grew up, so I've known about him all his life.
05:50 I knew his father.
05:51 And so I know he's raised right.
05:53 He's a solid young man.
05:54 But he's been a winner on every level, high school, college.
05:59 And I don't see him stop doing that in the pros.
06:03 He's just a winner.
06:04 >> Is Jerry gonna play, Hillary?
06:07 >> No, Jerry will not play.
06:08 >> Okay, and then is Nasir out too?
06:10 >> Yes, he's out.
06:13 >> And then Andre Patton and Travis Benjamin?
06:15 >> Andre Patton and Travis Benjamin, we'll see game time.
06:18 >> Okay.
06:19 >> All right, thanks coach.
06:22 >> All right. >> Thank you.
