2020 NFL Draft Chargers Select Jusin Herbert in First Round

The Chargers selected Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

00:06the Chargers. For more, I'm joined by the MMQB's Albert Breer and our Chargers

00:11reporter Jason Hirshhorn. Albert, what's your reaction to the pick? Well, you know,

00:17clearly the Chargers had to do something at the quarterback position. There was

00:20some feeling out there that they might go tackle here. I think part of the issue

00:24the Chargers have is their roster is pretty good and so when were they going

00:29to be in position to find their next guy? I don't think when you've got a roster

00:33that's got guys like Joey Bosa and Derwin James and Melvin Ingram and Casey

00:37Hayward and Mike Williams and Keenan Allen on it that you can really count on

00:42being in position to draft a quarterback again. It's not like they were going to

00:45be in position to take Trevor Lawrence next year. So I think the new general

00:49manager, or the general manager there, Tom Telesco, the head coach Anthony

00:52Lynn, saw a rare opportunity to be in position to draft a franchise

00:56quarterback. They move on from their old quarterback Phillip Rivers and now

01:00Justin Herbert will be the guy they build around. Jason, did the selection by

01:05the Dolphins, you know, make this easier for the Chargers? I'm not sure that

01:10actually made as much of a difference as it might appear on paper. General

01:14Manager Tom Telesco made a point that durability was something that the team

01:17was really focused on in terms of the evaluation process and that necessarily

01:22affects the evaluation of Tua Tungvaluwa. So Justin Herbert, who is certainly

01:27rarer than those prospects, but does have a lot of physical tools that the team

01:31definitely coveted the position, probably made more sense for them at the position.

01:40quarterback.
