00:00 The Chargers went offense taking Justin Herbert with their first pick.
00:04 They go defense with their second pick in the first round, taking linebacker Kenneth
00:08 Murray, number 23 overall.
00:11 For more, I'm joined by the MMQB's Albert Breer and Jason Hirshhorn, team reporter for
00:16 the Los Angeles Chargers.
00:18 Albert, what's your assessment of the pick?
00:20 Well, it's interesting, you know, seeing the fact that they actually moved up to go and
00:24 get this player.
00:25 Look, Kenneth Murray is as clean a prospect as there is in the draft.
00:30 He's a guy who I think most people who've scattered look at him as probably a team captain
00:34 early in his career.
00:35 He'll have the green dot in his helmet and certainly somebody who can tie talent and
00:39 defense together.
00:40 He already has a lot of horses on him with Joey Bosa, Derwin James, Casey Hayward, Melvin
00:48 Ingram.
00:49 So it's a very, very, very solid end of the first round type of pick.
00:55 I just was surprised that this wasn't an offensive tackle.
00:57 I got to be honest with you.
00:59 After they took Justin Herbert, you know, sixth overall, I think the thought was they
01:04 were going to take care of their left tackle need at one point or another here.
01:09 They gave up some capital, a second and a third round pick to go up and get Kenneth
01:13 Murray.
01:14 Again, I think Kenneth Murray is a very solid pick.
01:16 It just sort of makes you wonder what their next step is at the left tackle position.
01:19 Jason, do you agree with Albert's sentiment there?
01:22 Well, to a certain degree, it makes sense for them to have gone for a linebacker or
01:26 for an offensive tackle.
01:27 Those were the two other biggest needs entering the draft.
01:31 Now, with offensive tackle, they do have some options already on the roster.
01:35 Trey Pickens was a third round pick a year ago.
01:37 They remain very, very excited about his potential and they remain excited about a lot of their
01:41 younger offensive linemen under James Campin, the new offensive line coach.
01:45 As for Kenneth Murray, he was one of the, if not the best linebacker prospect in this
01:50 draft.
01:51 There was a huge need for them on defense and the depth behind Murray was very, very
01:55 limited relative to other positions.
01:57 So in terms of landing an impact player on day one, or at least on the first couple of
02:02 rounds, it really made sense to move up for a player like Kenneth Murray.
02:06 Well the Chargers certainly did that to get their guy Kenneth Murray at number 23 overall.
