00:00 Hey there, Fernando Ramirez for Sports Illustrated.
00:03 Chargers suffering their worst loss in franchise history,
00:06 45 to 0 against the New England Patriots.
00:10 Chargers just couldn't really get going on any of the three phases in the game.
00:14 Cam Newton starts off the game by moving the ball.
00:17 They moved the ball well, the Patriots did, by running the football.
00:20 First drive, they ran the football for about 50 yards.
00:23 Cam Newton capitalizes it with a one yard touchdown.
00:27 Chargers offense just couldn't get going.
00:29 Justin Herbert threw two interceptions, first drive of the game.
00:33 They come up the field and Michael Badgley just misses a field goal.
00:38 Chargers offense couldn't get going.
00:39 They were missing Sam Tevey, their left tackle.
00:41 He was next to his wife who was in labor.
00:46 They're having a child, so he couldn't attend today's game.
00:50 And they started Sam, Storm Norton at left tackle.
00:54 The offensive line just couldn't muster up anything.
00:56 They were letting the Patriots defensive line handle them at certain points
01:02 of the game, and special teams was just terrible again today.
01:08 Ten men on the field, 12 men on the field.
01:11 They allowed a punt return for a touchdown.
01:14 Right before the half, Michael Badgley attempts a 50 yard field goal.
01:17 The Chargers were down 21 to 0 to at least get some points on the board.
01:22 And it was blocked, Devin McCourty runs it back for a touchdown.
01:25 Just a lot of really bad football by the Chargers.
01:29 Second half, they really couldn't do anything either.
01:31 Anthony Lynn said after the game he was disappointed that this is the worst
01:36 football that he has seen as a coach or as a player.
01:40 The sentiment was said by the players.
01:41 Justin Herbert also said that he was disappointed in the loss and
01:45 that it was all of them.
01:46 It wasn't just the coaching staff.
01:48 It wasn't just the players.
01:49 It was everybody as a whole.
01:50 Kenneth Murray, rookie linebacker, who had actually his best game of the season.
01:55 He had 14 tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack.
01:58 But after the game he said, that doesn't matter.
02:00 What matters is we lost.
02:02 And he's right.
02:03 Anthony Lynn was asked after the game if he's talked to Dean Spanos lately about
02:08 his job security now being three and nine.
02:11 He said yes, Dean Spanos and I talk all the time.
02:13 He's pissed off.
02:14 And I mean, that's the sentiment that you got from the team,
02:16 that everybody is angry.
02:18 They're not happy about what's going on.
02:20 They were losing games in different ways.
02:23 They were losing leads.
02:25 They were doing different things like this.
02:26 But today they got blown out by Bill Budshak's offense,
02:32 defense, and special teams.
02:33 It was a collective unit for the Patriots.
02:36 Really, Cam Newton had a lot of rushing yards, but
02:39 he only threw the ball for 69 yards.
02:41 He had a touchdown on Nikhil Harry.
02:43 Really, the Chargers have a lot of question marks heading into the last
02:47 fourth of the season.
02:48 Anthony Lynn was asked straight up,
02:52 do you feel like you will be the head coach come tomorrow?
02:55 And he said, yes, I do.
02:57 So there's a lot of question marks heading into the back end of the season.
03:00 Chargers sit at three and nine.
03:01 They're about that top five pick for the draft.
03:05 But with a rookie quarterback and all the talent that this team has,
03:08 it's not looking good for Anthony Lynn just because of all those,
03:13 like I mentioned, all the talent that is on this team, the Joey Boses,
03:16 the Keenan Allens, the Mike Williams, the Justin Herbert.
03:19 So the Dean Spanos will have to sit and think,
03:22 is this the coach that I want for the future?
03:25 Is this the general manager that I want for the future?
03:27 Is this who I want building around my rookie quarterback?
03:30 Because the Chargers do have a good rookie quarterback.
03:32 They do have some good weapons.
03:33 They do have some good pieces.
03:35 But now, are these the right people?
03:38 Does Dean Spanos have the right people in the building that he wants to build what
03:43 many believe could be a franchise quarterback,
03:46 build around a franchise quarterback like Justin Herbert?
03:49 That will be something interesting that we will continue to monitor within
03:54 these few weeks.
03:56 Chargers play the Falcons next weekend.
03:57 Falcons lost today to the New Orleans Saints.
04:00 Taysom Hill putting together a good string of football games.
04:05 The Falcons, certainly their record has nothing to do with what that team is.
04:14 They have Julio Jones.
04:15 They have Matt Ryan.
04:17 They have a defense that can do some good things as they did to the Las Vegas Raiders
04:23 a couple of weeks ago.
04:24 So it's not gonna be another easy game for the Chargers.
04:28 The Falcons are coming into so fine, and they're coming in hot.
04:31 So definitely, the Chargers have their work cut out for them.
04:34 But for all that leading into that game and for the rest of the season,
04:38 don't forget to follow us.
04:39 I'll have all the content for you.
04:40 Again, I'm Fernando Ramirez for Sports Illustrated.
