00:00Hi Harper's Bazaar, I'm Christy Charlington-Burns and I am here looking back at some of my
00:04favorite runway looks over the years. This is Fashion Flashback.
00:10I never was comfortable on the runway but I started doing shows in New York in probably 1986.
00:15The more fun aspects of doing shows back in the day is to wear things that I would never wear
00:21in life. This is 1989 Calvin Klein. I don't know that this is a great look actually. It's a little
00:29like office, a working girl. Yeah I wouldn't say this would be one of my favorite Calvin Klein
00:34looks that I wore on a runway. We used to do the fashion shows in a showroom so very unglamorous.
00:41It was a very sort of short runway. You're sort of at eye level with the audience. You know most
00:47of the people in the front row so it's very informal and pretty relaxed. This is from 1991.
00:56It's from Christian Dior. The thing that stood out to me most with this look is gloves.
01:00So gloves was a big thing because oftentimes if we wore coats and scarves and hats and things like
01:07that we would then have to take them off or show the different layers. So just made more work to
01:12do and more things to remember when you're out there. I think it's real fur. I didn't really
01:18wear real fur very much. In fact I stopped wearing real fur probably around this time.
01:24I didn't do a lot of shows for Christian Dior but shows in Paris I think were probably the most
01:30like what you would imagine a fashion show to be like. Probably the most glamorous
01:33and usually held in venues that were like of a scene or a story or a place. Yeah I think the
01:40thing that stands out the most is the real fur. This photo is taken from a Chanel show in 1992.
01:48This is probably the image that shows up in my feed of my Instagram more than any other runway
01:54image I've ever had. I remember the dress being amazing. You would have these incredibly intensive
02:00kind of fittings so everything fit just right. But I remember the hair too. There were lots of feathers
02:06and I feel like I look beautiful. I remember feeling that way. This on the rack probably
02:12would not appeal to me but because it was made on me and everything that came together in terms of
02:18the hair and makeup and all the things it just felt that way. So yeah this is a one of my favorites.
02:23This next one is 1993. It's Valentino. This was also in Paris I think at the Louvre. This dress
02:31is is beautiful and I remember most of my Valentino show experiences being pretty glamorous.
02:36The clothes would be completely done before we did our fittings. They really didn't have to
02:39change very much but Valentino was infamous I will say for having us all do a full hair and makeup
02:47fitting together which meant that it took several hours. None of us liked it and I think we all had
02:52to kind of get together in order to stop that from happening. This is 1993. Rifat Ozbek in Paris.
03:01The show was always great. Always felt like good and sexy and young. Rifat was a really popular
03:07designer during these years. I first met him in London. He was really good friends with Naomi
03:13and such a fun fun person. This look is Chloe in 1993. I remember this look. I remember it being
03:22really pretty. Chloe always was very feminine and flowy and I actually have quite a few pieces
03:29somewhere in storage. Karl used to design four different collections. He would design Chanel,
03:35Karl Lagerfeld, Chloe and then Fendi as well at the time which is kind of amazing and I think very
03:42unique for any designer that I've ever known that I love this look. This one is Isaac Mizrahi in
03:501994 here in New York. I love this look. I mean I remember this look being cute and like a
03:57young spin on something that's much more glamorous and kind of old-worldly but I also love my hair at
04:02this time. I always liked bangs even though I have curly hair naturally so I think at this time
04:09I'm happy that I have straight dark hair with bangs. These are my bangs, yes. This is Giorgio
04:19Armani in 1994. This image is pretty. I think I only did Armani maybe once in Milan. There was such
04:28a sort of thing about Giorgio Armani back in the day like the brand and the whole experience of
04:34going in there. I can't say it was the most fun experience to do those shows. It was definitely
04:39a moment in those early 90s where Armani was everywhere. 2019. I hadn't done shows in many,
04:46many years and my dear old friend Marc Jacobs asked if I would walk in his show and so I said
04:51yes. I love this show. I love this dress. I went in for a couple of fittings for this look. I think
04:58it arrived like the day of or the day before but just doing the fitting felt more like a couture
05:03kind of fitting and I would go in at night for the fittings because it was a little bit of a
05:07surprise that I was going to be in the show. Marc and I kind of grew up together. I did a lot of
05:12shows for him early early days so it was really nice and it was at I think the Armory. The room
05:17was like very dark and it was a little terrifying to I mean again I didn't love shows ever but to
05:25do it after a big break I remember it being a little nerve-wracking and not being able to see
05:30and all that but I love the dress and I love the memory. Skip to last year. This one is Ralph Lauren
05:38September of 2023. Love the dress. Felt amazing in the dress. I did one fitting. It was kind of
05:46just come or was on its way from Italy. He asked if I would close the show. I was honored to have
05:52the opportunity and so this was a really great experience. I had known Ralph in my very early
05:58years starting in the business. He's such a lovely person and man and the whole family are
06:03all present and it always was that way. If it was this nice and easy I might do it more frequently
06:08but don't say that out loud. Thanks so much for hanging out and sharing these special
06:13memories with me and be sure to check out the May cover of Harper's Bazaar.
