00:00 Hi, I'm Kanil Thakur, reporting out of PM Narendra Modi's constituency, Varanasi.
00:15 Today is my third day in the city.
00:17 And one of the first, most striking things about Varanasi was of course, Modi's pet project,
00:23 which was the Kashi-Vishwanath corridor.
00:27 I mean, at a first and even a cursory glance, it's impressive by its might, it's majestic
00:36 by its size, dimension, and all of that.
00:42 It has a very distinct, capitalistic, heady feel to it, unlike most temples that you would
00:49 find in the country.
00:50 You have a food court, you have different statues, you have different kinds of galleries
00:55 and all of that.
00:57 And on the other hand, though, if this is development, there are people in Varanasi
01:05 whose opinions on it are divided.
01:08 On one hand, there are people who say that, look, the ghats have become much cleaner,
01:12 we have much more amenities like public toilets, changing rooms, and all of that, that have
01:17 made our lives much easier, convenient, perhaps even safer.
01:21 Then there are others who point to the fact that, what is the cost of development?
01:26 Something that really gets glossed over when you talk about these things.
01:31 More than dozens of temples were destroyed in making this mammoth corridor project.
01:38 Hundreds of people were displaced from their homes.
01:41 And we're talking about both material and also psychological loss.
01:44 You're talking about loss of livelihoods, we are talking about loss of neighborhoods,
01:47 we are talking about loss of even identities.
01:50 The second thing is, which literally shares shoulders or brushes shoulders with the Kashi
01:57 Vishwanath Temple, which is the Gyanvapi Mosque.
02:00 Something that takes profound importance in the light of the court's order on 31st
02:07 Jan, 2024, which allows puja to be held within the cellar of the mosque.
02:17 It's almost a bizarre kind of juxtaposition that really tells you a thing or two about
02:26 the different dimensions of this development.
